Incident light orientation lets C4 monocotyledonous leaves make light work differently

Photosynthesis is an important driver of ecosystem sustainability in the face of climate change. Monocotyledonous crop species with C4 photosynthesis such as maize (Zea mays L; corn) and sugar cane are crucial for future food security and biofuel crop requirements, while C4 pasture grasses such as Paspalum are central to natural ecosystems. The global demand for corn will exceed that for wheat and rice by 2020, making it the world's most important crop. Light-driven photosynthesis supports plant biomass production, but plants have also evolved safety valve mechanisms that attenuate the absorption of potentially lethal levels of excess light. The array of survival responses that enables leaves to evade photoinhibition is complex and involves chloroplast and leaf movement as well as the molecular rearrangements that facilitate thermal energy dissipation. Here we report a novel morphological mechanism that allows C4 monocotyledonous leaves to regulate photosynthesis independently on each surface with respect to incident light allowing better adaptation to water deficits and light stress. We show that under abaxial illumination as occurs when monocotyledonous leaves curl in response to water stress the stomata close and photosynthetic metabolism shuts down on the adaxial surface of C4 leaves but these parameters increase in function to the abaxial surface. We discuss how this regulation confers a survival advantage to the C4 relative to C3 leaves which are unable to regulate their dorso-ventral functions in relation to light

Cones and Cartan geometry

We show that the extended principal bundle of a Cartan geometry of type (A(m,R),GL(m,R)), endowed with its extended connection ωˆ, is isomorphic to the principal A(m,R)-bundle of affine frames endowed with the affine connection as defined in classical Kobayashi-Nomizu volume I. Then we classify the local holonomy groups of the Cartan geometry canonically associated to a Riemannian manifold. It follows that if the holonomy group of the Cartan geometry canonically associated to a Riemannian manifold is compact then the Riemannian manifold is locally a product of cones.Fil: Di Scala, Antonio Jose'. Este proyecto surge como respuesta a una necesidad por hacer de mi trabajo de grado una experiencia de profundo crecimiento profesional, tanto para mi persona como para cualquier individuo que en algún futuro tome la decisión de dirigir su carrera por los mismos senderos que he escogido. Así mismo, es consecuente con un planteamiento el cual se me inculcó durante mi paso por la facultad, el trabajo de grado debe ser la carta de presentación del estudiante ante el ámbito profesional. Nuevos escenarios para la adquisición de conocimientos medioambientales. Una experiencia en la Facultad de Educación y Humanidades de Melilla

Desde el año 2006 se viene desarrollando en la Facultad de Educación y Humanidades de Melilla (UGR) el proyecto “Propuesta metodológica para el aprendizaje autónomo de conceptos medioambientales en la formación de maestros”, que nace con la intención de adecuar la metodología de la asignatura obligatoria Fundamentos científicos medioambientales, al sistema de enseñanza impulsado por el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior a la vez que trata de dar respuesta a la escasez de recursos didácticos que relacionan el conocimiento del entorno local, en sus facetas ambiental y urbana, con los conocimientos que se deben trabajar en la formación inicial de los futuros maestros. En el presente trabajo se aportan algunos de los resultados obtenidos tras la puesta en práctica de una metodología activa en donde se combinan distintos escenarios de enseñanza-aprendizaje

On the Fluid Dynamics of the Make-Up Inlet Air and the Prediction of Anomalous Fire Dynamics in a Large-Scale Facility

The present paper is focused on the fluid dynamics of the make-up air at the vents in case of an atrium fire, its influence on the fire-induced conditions and the necessity of properly model it to obtain an accurate numerical prediction. For this aim, experimental data from two full-scale atrium fire tests conducted in a 20 m cubic facility, with venting conditions involving mechanical smoke exhaust and make-up air velocities larger than 1 m/s, and with different fire powers, are presented. Subsequent numerical simulations of these tests have been performed with the code Fire Dynamics Simulator v5.5.3. Two different approaches have been followed to simulate the make-up air inlet fluid dynamics, involving one domain which only considers the inside of the building and another which includes part of the outside. In the former simulations, anomalous phenomena around the fire appear, while the inclusion of the exterior domain provides with a completely different fluid dynamics inside the facility which agrees better with the experimental data. A detailed analysis of the fluid mechanics at the air inlet vents is conducted to explain these discrepancies. Número de publicación: 2 732 713 Número de solicitud: 201830500Método y sistema de evaluación de transformaciones morfológicas de una cavidad nasal que comprende, para cada transformación morfológica (ax) bajo análisis, simular (550) un flujo (F) en un modelo tridimensional modificado (Mx 3D) por dicha transformación morfológica (ax) y analizar al menos un primer parámetro (ϕ) y un segundo parámetro (R) calculados (560) a partir de dicho flujo (F) y dicho modelo tridimensional modificado (Mx 3D). El primer parámetro (ϕ) es una medida de asimetría morfológica y fluido-dinámica, mientras que el segundo parámetro (R) es una medida de resistencia bilateral de la combinación del pasaje nasal izquierdo y del pasaje nasal derecho.
