Prediction Model for the Life of Nickel-cadmium Batteries in Geosynchronous Orbit Satellites
A mathematical model is described which predicts the service life of nickel-cadmium batteries designed for geosynchronous orbit satellites. Regression analysis technique is used to analyze orbital data on second generation trickle charged batteries. The model gives average cell voltage as a function of design parameters, operating parameters and time. The voltage model has the properties of providing a good fit to the data, good predictive capability, and agreement with known battery performance characteristics. Average cell voltage can be predicted to within 0.02 volts for up to 8 years. This modeling shows that these batteries will operate reliably for 10 years. Third-generation batteries are expected to operate even longer

presence of a delta function coupling. We have also extended our model to deal
with general one dimensional multi-channel scattering problems
Group II metabotropic glutamate receptor type 2 allosteric potentiators prevent sodium lactate-induced panic-like response in panic-vulnerable rats
Rats with chronic inhibition of GABA synthesis by infusion of l-allyglycine, a glutamic acid decarboxylase inhibitor, into their dorsomedial/perifornical hypothalamus are anxious and exhibit panic-like cardio-respiratory responses to treatment with intravenous (i.v.) sodium lactate (NaLac) infusions, in a manner similar to what occurs in patients with panic disorder. We previously showed that either NMDA receptor antagonists or metabotropic glutamate receptor type 2/3 receptor agonists can block such a NaLac response, suggesting that a glutamate mechanism is contributing to this panic-like state. Using this animal model of panic, we tested the efficacy of CBiPES and THIIC, which are selective group II metabotropic glutamate type 2 receptor allosteric potentiators (at 10-30 mg/kg i.p.), in preventing NaLac-induced panic-like behavioral and cardiovascular responses. The positive control was alprazolam (3mg/kg i.p.), a clinically effective anti-panic benzodiazepine. As predicted, panic-prone rats given a NaLac challenge displayed NaLac-induced panic-like cardiovascular (i.e. tachycardia and hypertensive) responses and "anxiety" (i.e. decreased social interaction time) and "flight" (i.e. increased locomotion) -associated behaviors; however, systemic injection of the panic-prone rats with CBiPES, THIIC or alprazolam prior to the NaLac dose blocked all NaLac-induced panic-like behaviors and cardiovascular responses. These data suggested that in a rat animal model, selective group II metabotropic glutamate type 2 receptor allosteric potentiators show an anti-panic efficacy similar to alprazolam
The 16OH/18OH and OD/OH isotope ratios in comet C/2002 T7 (LINEAR)
The 16OH/18OH and OD/OH isotope ratios are measured in the Oort-Cloud comet
C/2002 T7 (LINEAR) through ground-based observations of the OH ultraviolet
bands at 3063 A (0,0) and 3121 A (1,1) secured with the Very Large Telescope
(VLT) feeding the Ultraviolet-Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES). From the
16OH/18OH ratio, we find 16O/18O = 425 +/- 55, equal within the uncertainties
to the terrestrial value and to the ratio measured in other comets, although
marginally smaller. We also estimate OD/OH from which we derive D/H = 2.5 +/-
0.7 10-4 in water. This value is compatible with the water D/H ratios evaluated
in other comets and marginally higher than the terrestrial value.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letter
Fuel Cell Handbook, Fourth Edition
Robust progress has been made in fuel cell technology since the previous edition of the Fuel Cell Handbook was published in January 1994. This Handbook provides a foundation in fuel cells for persons wanting a better understanding of the technology, its benefits, and the systems issues that influence its application. Trends in technology are discussed, including next-generation concepts that promise ultra high efficiency and low cost, while providing exceptionally clean power plant systems. Section 1 summarizes fuel cell progress since the last edition and includes existing power plant nameplate data. Section 2 addresses the thermodynamics of fuel cells to provide an understanding of fuel cell operation at two levels (basic and advanced). Sections 3 through 6 describe the four major fuel cell types and their performance based on cell operating conditions. The section on polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells has been added to reflect their emergence as a significant fuel cell technology. Phosphoric acid, molten carbonate, and solid oxide fuel cell technology description sections have been updated from the previous edition. New information indicates that manufacturers have stayed with proven cell designs, focusing instead on advancing the system surrounding the fuel cell to lower life cycle costs. Section 7, Fuel Cell Systems, has been significantly revised to characterize near-term and next-generation fuel cell power plant systems at a conceptual level of detail. Section 8 provides examples of practical fuel cell system calculations. A list of fuel cell URLs is included in the Appendix. A new index assists the reader in locating specific information quickly
AnatomÃa comparada de la lámina foliar del género Distichlis (Poaceae)
Six species and 11 varieties of the genus Distichlis Raf. were compared anatomically. The taxa studied were: Distichlis australis (Speg.) Villamil; D. humilis Phil.; D. palmeri (Vasey) Fassett ex I.M. Johnst.; D. scoparia (Nees ex Kunth) Arechav. var. erinacea (Beetle) Nicora and var. scoparia; and D. spicata (L.) Greene, represented by the following eight varieties: var. borealis (J. Presl) Beetle, var. divaricata Beetle, var. mendocina (J. Presl) Hack., var. mexicana Beetle, var. nana Beetle, var. spicata, var. stolonifera Beetle and var. stricta (Torr.) Scribn. Also included were two taxa for which the anatomical information was taken from the literature: Distichlis laxiflora Hack. and Distichlis spicata var. distichophylla (Michx.) Beetle. Fourteen anatomical characters of taxonomic value were found, seven in cross section and seven in the epidermis as seen in surface view. Distichlis australis and D. palmeri were found to differ from all of the other species. Distichlis humilis, D. scoparia and D. spicata form an anatomically homogeneous group, but with characteristics that distinguish each of them. Within Distichlis spicata, no anatomical character or combination of characters was found that would justify the recognition of infraspecific taxa and/or segregate species. For this reason, these taxa are considered to be synonyms of D. spicata.Se hizo un estudio anatómico-sistemático de seis especies y 11 variedades del género Distichlis Raf. Los taxa incluidos fueron: D. australis (Speg.) Villamil; D. humilis Phil.; D. palmeri (Vasey) Fassett ex I. M. Distichlis humilis, D. scoparia y D. spicata forman un grupo anatómicamente homogéneo pero con caracterÃsticas que las hacen distintivas a cada una. Para Distichlis spicata, no se encontró ningún carácter o combinación de caracteres anatómicos con los cuales pueda separarse en distintos grupos. Por esta razón, las especies, subespecies y/o variedades propuestas por algunos autores para esta entidad se consideran sinónimos de D. spicata
Pharmacological depletion of serotonin in the basolateral amygdala complex reduces anxiety and disrupts fear conditioning
The basolateral and lateral amygdala nuclei complex (BLC) is implicated in a number of emotional responses including conditioned fear and social anxiety. Based on previous studies demonstrating that enhanced serotonin release in the BLC leads to increased anxiety and fear responses, we hypothesized that pharmacologically depleting serotonin in the BLC using 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine (5,7-DHT) injections would lead to diminished anxiety and disrupted fear conditioning. To test this hypothesis, 5,7-DHT(a serotonin-depleting agent) was bilaterally injected into the BLC. Desipramine (a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor) was systemically administered to prevent non-selective effects on norepinephrine. After 5days, 5-7-DHT-treated rats showed increases in the duration of social interaction (SI) time, suggestive of reduced anxiety-like behavior. We then used a cue-induced fear conditioning protocol with shock as the unconditioned stimulus and tone as the conditioned stimulus for rats pretreated with bilateral 5,7-DHT, or vehicle, injections into the BLC. Compared to vehicle-treated rats, 5,7-DHT rats had reduced acquisition of fear during conditioning (measured by freezing time during tone), also had reduced fear retrieval/recall on subsequent testing days. Ex vivo analyses revealed that 5,7-DHT reduced local 5-HT concentrations in the BLC by ~40% without altering local norepinephrine or dopamine concentrations. These data provide additional support for 5-HT playing a critical role in modulating anxiety-like behavior and fear-associated memories through its actions within the BLC
Curve Crossing Problem with Arbitrary Coupling: Analytically Solvable Model
We give a general method for finding an exact analytical solution for the two
state curve crossing problem. The solution requires the knowledge of the
Green's function for the motion on the uncoupled potential. We use the method
to find the solution of the problem in the case of parabolic potentials coupled
by Gaussian interaction. Our method is applied to this model system to
calculate the effect of curve crossing on electronic absorption spectrum and
resonance Raman excitation profile
Adaptive Immunity and Antigen-Specific Activation in Obesity-Associated Insulin Resistance
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) is a metabolic disease that is strongly tied to obesity and often preceded by insulin resistance (IR). It has been established that chronic inflammation of hypertrophic adipose tissue depots in obese individuals leads to obesity-associated IR and is mediated by cells of the innate immune system, particularly macrophages. More recently, cells of the adaptive immune system, B and T lymphocytes, have also emerged as important regulators of glucose homeostasis, raising the intriguing possibility that antigen-driven immune responses play a role in disease. In this review, we critically evaluate the roles that various B and T cell subsets play in IR, and then we examine the data suggesting that antigen-driven mechanisms, such as antigen presentation and costimulation, may drive the activity of these lymphocytes
