    The original publication is available at http://www.sajip.co.zaThe personality traits and managerial potential of managerial motivated persons: In the ligth of criticisms of the psychometric suitability of existing measures of managerial motivation a new scale, the Managerial Motivation Questionnaire (MMQ), was developed. This was done on the basis of a comprehensive study of the literature on managerial motivation and the role-motivation theory of Miner. The MMQ demonstrated adequate internal consistency. The aim of this study is to clarify the construct validity of the MMQ. Significant and positive correlations were found between managerial motivation, overall managerial potential, and nine managerial dimensions. The construct validity of the MMQ was further supported by correlations between sixteen personality traits and managerial motivation.In die lig van kritiek teen die psigometriese geskiktheid van bestaande meetinstrumente van bestuursmotivering is 'n nuwe skaal, die Bestuursmotiveringsvraelys (BMV)/ ontwikkel. Dit is gedoen op grond van die konseptuele omiyning van bestuursmotivering en die rolmotiveringsteorie van Miner. Die BMV vertoon toereikende interne konsekwentheid. Die doel van hierdie studie is om die konstrukgeldigheid van die BMV verder op te klaar. Beduidend positiewe korrelasies is tussen bestuursmotivering/ globale bestuurspotensiaal en nege bestuursdimensies gevind.     Application of Monte Carlo-based statistical significance determinations to the Beta Cephei stars V400 Car, V401 Car, V403 Car and V405 Car

    We have used Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis and Monte Carlo significance tests to detect periodicities above the 3-sigma level in the Beta Cephei stars V400 Car, V401 Car, V403 Car and V405 Car. These methods produce six previously unreported periodicities in the expected frequency range of excited pulsations: one in V400 Car, three in V401 Car, one in V403 Car and one in V405 Car. One of these six frequencies is significant above the 4-sigma level. We provide statistical significances for all of the periodicities found in these four stars.Comment: 11 pages, 17 figure

    Why do male patients request circumcisions?

    Background: Circumcision has been performed for centuries. The popularity of the procedure waxed and waned during the ages. In South Africa, cultural circumcision is often regarded as the only way to attain full adulthood, and consequently many patients request circumcision by medical personnel. The aim of this study was to explore the motivations and perceptions of patients requesting circumcision at Kalafong Hospital. Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with patients requesting circumcision. Interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed and themes were identified. Triangulation was used to enhance the trustworthiness of the data. Results: The themes that were identified were cultural acceptance, fear of mountain school, improved intercourse, prevention of disease and improved hygiene. Conclusions: Doctors should adopt a compassionate attitude when patients request circumcision. It is imperative to discuss patients' expectations. If this is not done, patients' problems may remain unsolved. The perception that circumcision provides effective protection against sexually transmitted diseases is dangerous and should be addressed fully.     Die betroubaarheid en faktorstruktuur van die aangepaste meervoudige keuse-formaat van die miner sentence completion scale (MSCS)

    The original publication is available at http://www.sajip.co.zaThe reliability and factor structure of the adapted multiple choice version of the Miner Sentence Completion Scale (MSCS). In this study the multiple choice MSCS was adapted as a result of several criticisms thereof. The internal consistency and factor structure of the adapted MSCS were determined to ascertain the reliability and construct validity of the questionnaire. Results show that the internal consistency is unsatisfactory and that the factor structure is so complex that interpretation becomes virtually impossible. In light of the results of this study and other research findings of the psychometric properties of the MSCS, it is recommended that a new measuring instrument for managerial motivation be developed that will enable a valid testing of the managerial rolemotivation theory.Na aanleiding van verskeie punte van kritiek teen die MSCS is die meervoudige keuse-MSCS in hierdie studie aangepas. Ten einde 'n aanduiding van die betroubaarheid en konstrukgeldigheid van die aangepaste MSCS te verkry, is die interne konsekwentheid en faktorstruktuur daarvan bepaal. Die resultate dui daarop dat die interne konsekwentheid onbevredigend en die faktorstruktuur te kompleks vir interpretasie is.     Spin-Charge Separation, Anomalous Scaling and the Coherence of Hopping in exactly solved Two Chain Models

    The coherence of transport between two one-dimensional interacting Fermi liquids, coupled by single particle hopping and interchain interaction, is examined in the context of two exactly soluble models. It is found that the coherence of the inter-chain hopping depends on the interplay between inter-chain hopping and inter-chain interaction terms, and not simply on the ground state spectral properties of an isolated chain. Specifically, the splitting of levels in associated with interchain hopping in a g4g_4 soluble model is found to be enhanced by the introduction of interchain interaction. It is also shown that, for an exactly solvable model with both g2g_2 and g4g_4 interactions, coherent interchain hopping coexists with anomalous scaling and non-Fermi liquid behavior in the chain direction.Comment: Two postscript figure

    The prevalence of pulmonary embolism in non-hospitalised de-isolated patients diagnosed with mild COVID-19 disease

    Background. Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a known complication of COVID-19 disease. The mechanism of thromboembolic events appears to be stimulated by excessive thrombin production, inhibition of fibrinolysis and deposition of antiphospholipids and thrombi, as well as microvascular dysfunction in multiple vascular beds. The occurrence of PE has been well demonstrated in hospitalised patients with severe disease. Very few data are available on its incidence or prevalence in non-hospitalised patients diagnosed with a milder form of the disease.Objectives. To assess the prevalence of PE in non-hospitalised patients diagnosed with mild COVID-19 who presented with raised D-dimer levels and persistent or new-onset cardiopulmonary symptoms.Methods. This was a retrospective study conducted in the Department of Nuclear Medicine at Universitas Academic Hospital, Bloemfontein, South Africa. We reviewed the studies of 65 non-hospitalised patients with COVID-19 referred to the department from July 2020 to January 2021 for a perfusion-only single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) study or a ventilation/perfusion (VQ) SPECT/CT study. All 65 patients had raised D-dimer levels with persistent, worsening or new-onset cardiopulmonary symptoms after the diagnosis of COVID-19.Results. Sixty-five patients were studied. The median (interquartile range) age was 46 (41 - 54) years and the majority (88.2%) were female. There were 22 patients (33.8%) with lung perfusion defects in keeping with PE. Two of these patients had a false-negative computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) study for PE performed the same day as their VQ SPECT/CT study.Conclusions. We confirm a high prevalence of PE in non-hospitalised patients diagnosed with mild COVID-19 who presented with raised D-dimer levels and persistent or new-onset cardiopulmonary symptoms. We recommend that irrespective of disease severity, hospitalised and non-hospitalised patients with COVID-19 presenting with persistent or new-onset cardiopulmonary symptoms and raised D-dimer levels should be investigated further for PE.
