    The Nature of the Hall Insulator

    We have conducted an experimental study of the linear transport properties of the magnetic-field induced insulating phase which terminates the quantum Hall (QH) series in two dimensional electron systems. We found that a direct and simple relation exists between measurements of the longitudinal resistivity, ρxx\rho_{xx}, in this insulating phase and in the neighboring QH phase. In addition, we find that the Hall resistivity, ρxy\rho_{xy}, can be quantized in the insulating phase. Our results indicate that a close relation exists between the conduction mechanism in the insulator and in the QH liquid.Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages, 4 figure

    Statistical significance of fine structure in the frequency spectrum of Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations

    We discuss a statistical analysis of Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations measured in a two-dimensional ring, in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Measurements performed at different values of gate voltage are used to calculate the ensemble-averaged modulus of the Fourier spectrum and, at each frequency, the standard deviation associated to the average. This allows us to prove the statistical significance of a splitting that we observe in the h/e peak of the averaged spectrum. Our work illustrates in detail the role of sample specific effects on the frequency spectrum of Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations and it demonstrates how fine structures of a different physical origin can be discriminated from sample specific features.Comment: accepted for publication in PR

    Associations of prenatal environmental phenol and phthalate biomarkers with respiratory and allergic diseases among children aged 6 and 7 years

    Background: Prenatal environmental phenol and phthalate exposures may alter immune or inflammatory responses leading to respiratory and allergic disease. Objectives: We estimated associations of prenatal environmental phenol and phthalate biomarkers with respiratory and allergic outcomes among children in the Mount Sinai Children's Environmental Health Study. Methods: We quantified urinary biomarkers of benzophenone-3, bisphenol A, paradichlorobenzene (as 2,5-dichlorophenol), triclosan, and 10 phthalate metabolites in third trimester maternal samples and assessed asthma, wheeze, and atopic skin conditions via parent questionnaires at ages 6 and 7 years (n = 164 children with 240 observations). We used logistic regression to estimate covariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) per standard deviation difference in natural log biomarker concentrations and examined effect measure modification by child's sex. Results: Associations of prenatal 2,5-dichlorophenol (all outcomes) and bisphenol A (asthma outcomes) were modified by child's sex, with increased odds of outcomes among boys but not girls. Among boys, ORs for asthma diagnosis per standard deviation difference in biomarker concentration were 3.00 (95% CI: 1.36, 6.59) for 2,5-dichlorophenol and 3.04 (95% CI: 1.38, 6.68) for bisphenol A. Wheeze in the past 12 months was inversely associated with low molecular weight phthalate metabolites among girls only (OR: 0.27, 95% CI: 0.13, 0.59) and with benzophenone-3 among all children (OR: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.44, 0.96). Conclusions: Prenatal bisphenol A and paradichlorobenzene exposures were associated with pediatric respiratory outcomes among boys. Future studies may shed light on biological mechanisms and potential sexually-dimorphic effects of select phenols and phthalates on respiratory disease development

    We consider the ``fractional quantum Hall atom" in the vanishing Zeeman energy limit, and investigate the validity of Hund's maximum-spin rule for interacting electrons in various Landau levels. While it is not valid for {\em electrons} in the lowest Landau level, there are regions of filling factors where it predicts the ground state spin correctly {\em provided it is applied to composite fermions}.     Spins, charges and currents at Domain Walls in a Quantum Hall Ising Ferromagnet

    We study spin textures in a quantum Hall Ising ferromagnet. Domain walls between ferro and unpolarized states at Μ=2\nu=2 are analyzed with a functional theory supported by a microscopic calculation. In a neutral wall, Hartree repulsion prevents the appearance of a fan phase provoked by a negative stiffness. For a charged system, electrons become trapped as solitons at the domain wall. The size and energy of the solitons are determined by both Hartree and spin-orbit interactions.     What Can Be Learned with an Iodine Solar-Neutrino Detector?

    We study the potential benefits of an iodine-based solar-neutrino detector for testing hypotheses that involve neutrino oscillations. We argue that such a detector will have a good chance of distinguishing the two allowed regions of Δm2\Delta m^2 -- sin⁡22ξ\sin^22\theta parameter space if neutrino conversion is occurring in the sun. It should also be able to detect seasonal variations in the signal due to vacuum oscillations and might be sensitive enough to detect day/night variations due to MSW transitions in the earth.     Short-Range Interactions and Scaling Near Integer Quantum Hall Transitions

    We study the influence of short-range electron-electron interactions on scaling behavior near the integer quantum Hall plateau transitions. Short-range interactions are known to be irrelevant at the renormalization group fixed point which represents the transition in the non-interacting system. We find, nevertheless, that transport properties change discontinuously when interactions are introduced. Most importantly, in the thermodynamic limit the conductivity at finite temperature is zero without interactions, but non-zero in the presence of arbitrarily weak interactions. In addition, scaling as a function of frequency, ω\omega, and temperature, TT, is determined by the scaling variable ω/Tp\omega/T^p (where pp is the exponent for the temperature dependence of the inelastic scattering rate) and not by ω/T\omega/T, as it would be at a conventional quantum phase transition described by an interacting fixed point. We express the inelastic exponent, pp, and the thermal exponent, zTz_T, in terms of the scaling dimension, −α<0-\alpha < 0, of the interaction strength and the dynamical exponent zz (which has the value z=2z=2), obtaining p=1+2α/zp=1+2\alpha/z and zT=2/pz_T=2/p.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review

    Skyrmion Excitations in Quantum Hall Systems

    Using finite size calculations on the surface of a sphere we study the topological (skyrmion) excitation in quantum Hall system with spin degree of freedom at filling factors around Μ=1\nu=1. In the absence of Zeeman energy, we find, in systems with one quasi-particle or one quasi-hole, the lowest energy band consists of states with L=SL=S, where LL and SS are the total orbital and spin angular momentum. These different spin states are almost degenerate in the thermodynamic limit and their symmetry-breaking ground state is the state with one skyrmion of infinite size. In the presence of Zeeman energy, the skyrmion size is determined by the interplay of the Zeeman energy and electron-electron interaction and the skyrmion shrinks to a spin texture of finite size. We have calculated the energy gap of the system at infinite wave vector limit as a function of the Zeeman energy and find there are kinks in the energy gap associated with the shrinking of the size of the skyrmion. breaking ground state is the state with one skyrmion of infinite size.     Grilled, Barbecued, and Smoked Meat Intake and Survival Following Breast Cancer

    Background: Grilled, barbecued, and smoked meat intake, a prevalent dietary source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) carcinogens, may increase the risk of incident breast cancer. However, no studies have examined whether intake of this PAH source influences survival after breast cancer. Methods: We interviewed a population-based cohort of 1508 women diagnosed with first primary invasive or in situ breast cancer in 1996 and 1997 at baseline and again approximately five years later to assess grilled/barbecued and smoked meat intake. After a median of 17.6 years of follow-up, 597 deaths, of which 237 were breast cancer related, were identified. Multivariable Cox regression was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for mortality as related to prediagnosis intake, comparing high (above the median) to low intake, as well as postdiagnosis changes in intake, comparing every combination of pre-/postdiagnosis intake to low pre-/postdiagnosis intake. All statistical tests were two-sided. Results: High prediagnosis grilled/barbecued and smoked meat intake was associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR = 1.23, 95% CI = 1.03 to 1.46). Other associations were noted, but estimates were not statistically significant. These include high prediagnosis smoked beef/lamb/pork intake and increased all-cause (HR = 1.17, 95% CI = 0.99 to 1.38, Ptrend = .10) and breast cancer–specific (HR = 1.23, 95% CI = 0.95 to 1.60, Ptrend = .09) mortality. Also, among women with continued high grilled/barbecued and smoked meat intake after diagnosis, all-cause mortality risk was elevated 31% (HR = 1.31, 95% CI = 0.96 to 1.78). Further, breast cancer–specific mortality was decreased among women with any pre- and postdiagnosis intake of smoked poultry/fish (HR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.31 to 0.97).     Background: The purpose of this study was to examine whether at-diagnosis smoking and postdiagnosis changes in smoking within five years after breast cancer were associated with long-termall-cause and breast cancer-specific mortality. Methods: A population-based cohort of 1508 women diagnosed with first primary in situ or invasive breast cancer in 1996 to 1997 were interviewed shortly after diagnosis and again approximately five years later to assess smoking history. Participants were followed for vital status through December 31, 2014. After 18+ years of follow-up, 597 deaths were identified, 237 of which were breast cancer related. Multivariable Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Compared with never smokers, risk of all-cause mortality was elevated among the 19% of at-diagnosis smokers (HR=1.69, 95% CI=1.36 to 2.11), those who smoked 20 or more cigarettes per day (HR=1.85, 95% CI=1.42 to 2.40), women who had smoked for 30 or more years (HR=1.62, 95% CI=1.28 to 2.05), and women who had smoked 30 or more pack-years (HR=1.82, 95% CI=1.39 to 2.37). Risk of all-cause mortality was further increased among the 8% of women who were at-/postdiagnosis smokers (HR=2.30, 95% CI=1.56 to 3.39) but was attenuated among the 11% women who quit smoking after diagnosis (HR=1.83, 95% CI=1.32 to 2.52). Compared with never smokers, breast cancer-specific mortality risk was elevated 60% (HR=1.60, 95% CI=0.79 to 3.23) among at-/postdiagnosis current smokers, but the confidence interval included the null value and elevated 175% (HR=2.75, 95% CI=1.26 to 5.99) when we considered postdiagnosis cumulative pack-years. Conclusions: Smoking negatively impacts long-term survival after breast cancer. Postdiagnosis cessation of smoking may reduce the risk of all-cause mortality. Breast cancer survivors may benefit from aggressive smoking cessation programs starting as early as the time of diagnosis
