    Combining hot-compressed water and ball milling pretreatments to improve the efficiency of the enzymatic hydrolysis of eucalyptus

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Lignocellulosic biomass such as wood is an attractive material for fuel ethanol production. Pretreatment technologies that increase the digestibility of cellulose and hemicellulose in the lignocellulosic biomass have a major influence on the cost of the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis and ethanol fermentation processes. Pretreatments without chemicals such as acids, bases or organic solvents are less effective for an enzymatic hydrolysis process than those with chemicals, but they have a less negative effect on the environment.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The enzymatic digestibility of eucalyptus was examined following a combined pretreatment without chemicals comprising a ball milling (BM) and hot-compressed water (HCW) treatment. The BM treatment simultaneously improved the digestibility of both glucan and xylan, and was effective in lowering the enzyme loading compared with the HCW treatment. The combination of HCW and BM treatment reduced the BM time. The eucalyptus treated with HCW (160°C, 30 minutes) followed by BM (20 minutes) had an approximately 70% yield of total sugar with a cellulase loading of 4 FPU/g substrate. This yield was comparable to the yields from samples treated with HCW (200°C, 30 minutes) or BM (40 minutes) hydrolyzed with 40 FPU/g substrate.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The HCW treatment is useful in improving the milling efficiency. The combined HCW-BM treatment can save energy and enzyme loading.</p

    Tephrochronological study on the 1986-1987 eruptions of Izu-Oshima volcano, Japan

    Sequences and products of the Izu-Oshima 1986-1987 eruptions which started on November 15, 1986, were investigated tephrochronologically. The results are summarized as follows : 1) Summit eruptions (Crater A) During 15-20, Nov. 1986, Strombolian eruptions continued to make a lava lake from where lava flows spilt over and went down the slope of the central cone to the caldera floor (LA I~IV). Volcanic ash and scoria (TA-1~4) were dispersed to the eastern and western parts of the island. On 21 Nov., a little after the beginning of the fissure eruption (Craters B), Strombolian eruptions were reactivated and ejected large volcanic bombs and scoria (TA-5) from Crater A. On Dec. 18, 1986, small explosion occurred from the Crater A for three or four hours, ejecting a scoria fall (TA-6) and bomb. The level of the lava lake lowered about 5 meters. On Nov. 16, 1987, a phreatic explosion occurred to break the crust of the lava lake, and the lava drained back to the deep on Nov. 18. 2) Fissure eruptions in the caldera floor (Craters B) At 16 : 15, on Nov. 21, 1986, fissure eruptions (Craters B) started on the caldera floor and extended to the slope of the central cone. The eruptions became explosive one, generating lava fountains with the height of more than 1500 meters, with a high discharge rate of 8×106 ton/hour, producing pyroclastic cones and rootless (clastogenic) lava flows (LB I and III). Subplinian scoria falls were dispersed to west (TB-1) and east (TB-2). About 5 hours after the beginning, the activity waned to produce only volcanic ash (TB-3 and -6) and finer scoria falls (TB-4 and -5) and ceased on Nov. 23. A rheomorphic lava flow (LB II) occurred from the edge of the deformed cone on Nov. 23. 3) Fissure eruptions on the somma slope (Craters C) At 17 : 45, on Nov. 21, 1986, fissure eruptions occurred on the somma slope, and produced two lava flows (LC I and II), scoria cones, and vesicular scoria falls (TC-1 and -3) from the 11 craters. 4) The 1986 eruptions ejected 0.053 km3, 7.9×107 tons of lava and pyroclasts from A, B and C craters (Table 4)

    The results of liver function test on workers handling ethanol and isopropanol solvents

    Liver function tests such as GOT, GPT, γ-GTP and ornithine carbamyl transferase (OCT) were done on workers handling alcoholic solvents. One was a group of molders working in a foundry where they sprayed ethanol solvent on the surface of a sandbox and burnt it. Another was a group of painters at an iron and steel works and they sprayed paint with isopropanol solvent on iron and steel plates. No statistical differences in the results of tests between the solvent workers and control groups were seen. High correlations were found between GOT/γ-GTP and OCT/γ-GTP. OCT of 4 workers who had drunk alcohol on the day before test showed a statisically high value compared to workers who had not drunk alcohol

    Tire-Chip Reinforced Foundation as Liquefaction Countermeasure for Residential Buildings

    To prevent vibration-induced and liquefaction-induced damage to residential buildings during earthquakes, a low-cost technique has been developed and described here. It utilizes a mixture of tire chips and gravel as the horizontal reinforcing inclusion under the foundation of residential houses. The horizontal reinforcing inclusion refers to a layer of tire chips and gravel which is placed horizontally beneath the foundation. This mixture of tire chips and gravel provides sufficient bearing capacity to the foundation. In this research, a series of small-scale 1 g model shaking table tests was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the technique. In addition, cyclic undrained triaxial tests were performed to evaluate the liquefaction susceptibility of tire chip-gravel mixtures. The results of the model tests indicated that when the thickness of the reinforced layer is 10 cm (2 m in prototype) and the gravel fraction (percentage by volume of gravel in the mixture) is 50%, the technique yields the best performance. The element tests also indicated that the gravel fraction plays an important role. A gravel fraction of 50-60% by volume was found to be the best mixing percentage, at which the rise in excess pore water pressure could be significantly restrained without compromising the stiffness of the reinforcing inclusion

    Burn-associated delayed dilated cardiomyopathy evaluated by cardiac PET and SPECT: Report of a case

    AbstractDilated cardiomyopathy is a delayed-onset and rarely reported cardiac complication of burn injury although the mechanism remains unclear. We thus report a case of dilated cardiomyopathy following severe burn injury, in which technetium 99m sestamibi single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), iodine-123 beta-methyl-iodophenylpentadecanoic acid SPECT and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET) were performed to evaluate the pathophysiologic condition in combination with cardiac catheterization and myocardial biopsy. The cardiac PET and SPECT images showed reduced myocardial blood flow, decreased fatty acid metabolism, and increased glucose utilization in the left ventricular lateral wall in spite of normal coronary angiography, no significant cardiac fibrosis, and inflammatory cell infiltration, which suggests that myocardial ischemia due to microcirculatory disturbance in hypermetabolic state associated with burn injury might be a causative mechanism of dilated cardiomyopathy in this case. A beta blocker, bisoprolol, was successfully introduced in this patient in combination with oral inotropic agents, pimobendan and digitalis after the prolonged use of intravenous dobutamine infusion, which might have been beneficial for this patient with burn-associated dilated cardiomyopathy not only to reduce regional myocardial ischemia but also to attenuate hypermetabolic state after severe burn injury.<Learning objective: Dilated cardiomyopathy complicated with burn injury has been reported to cause a sudden attack of dyspnea and death. This case report suggests that burn-associated dilated cardiomyopathy may be caused by relative myocardial ischemia due to microvascular disturbance in hypermetabolic state associated with burn injuries and can be treated effectively with beta blockers with or without oral inotropic agents.

    Association of liver enzyme levels and alveolar bone loss : a cross-sectional clinical study in Sado Island

    The interaction of periodontopathic bacteria with host immune system induces the production of inflammatory mediators which leads to alveolar bone loss (ABL), the essential feature of periodontitis. Concurrently, periodontal diseases cause the elevation of blood cytokine levels, the alteration of gut microbiota and the dissemination of enterobacteria to the liver. Owing to these mechanisms, periodontal disease might be a risk for liver dysfunction. Several epidemiological studies have reported associations between periodontal diseases and liver dysfunction, although the association between ABL and liver dysfunction has not been investigated. This cross-sectional study determined if elevated serum liver enzyme levels were associated with ABL in Japanese adults. Japanese adults living on Sado Island who visited Sado General Hospital were invited to participate in the study. Participants over 40 years of age who underwent dental panoramic radiography and blood tests were included. Drinking and smoking habits were self-administered. After excluding patients with edentulous jaw, diagnosed liver diseases, and those on dialysis, data from 44 men and 66 women with a mean age of 73 years were analyzed. The average percentage of ABL for each participant was calculated for mesial and distal sites of all remaining teeth. The levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) were determined. Univariate analyses were performed to select covariates to be put in multivariate analyses. The association between elevated serum liver enzyme levels and the highest quartile of ABL were assessed by multiple logistic regression analysis. After adjusting for covariates, no significant association was found between elevated serum AST, ALT, or GGT levels as dependent variables and the highest quartile of ABL as an explanatory variable. There was no significant association between the elevation of serum liver enzyme levels and ABL in Japanese adults
