    3D structure design of magnetic ferrite cores using gelcasting and pressure-less sintering process

    Gelcasting is a well established process for ceramics manufacturing which recently has been proved to be successful for soft ferrites as well. This approach is particularly interesting for power electronics application in which the magnetic components (e.g. transformers and inductors) are three dimensionally integrated on the power module substrate. This paper proposes a gelcasting process adapted to make it more effective for 3D heterogeneous integration. The main novelties in this direction consist of low solid load (65wt%) and gelation without catalyst to improve casting and de-airing steps. The magnetic properties of gelcast samples are compared with commercial materials and correlated with the microstructure

    Matrix converters for sensorless control of PMSMs and other auxiliaries on deep-sea ROVs

    The use of matrix converter technologies for the control of actuators and other auxiliaries onboard work-class, deep-sea, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) is reported. Key requirements for such systems are the ability to sustain operation at high ambient pressures, up to 300 bar, commensurate with operation of ROVs at depths of 3000 m, and to minimise the number of external connections and cabling mass to improve reliability and reduce drag. Emphasis is given to 32 matrix converters for 3f–1f AC voltage/frequency for conversion control of system auxiliaries, with experimental results showing circuit functionality during pressure cycling consistent with typical operational duties, and the use of 33 matrix converters for control of actuators driven by brushless permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs). A principal feature of the paper is the development of model-based sensorless control methodologies for driving PMSMs using matrix converters. In particular, it is shown that observer-based state estimation techniques normally employed for sensorless control of PMSMs using voltage source inverters, can be readily exported to matrix converter counterparts with minimal additional computational overhead. Experimental results from a 0.7 kW PMSM driven by a matrix converter, suitable for a subsea actuator pump, are included to demonstrate the ability of the sensorless techniques to provide reliable estimates of machine rotor position under transient load conditions, and the subsequent exploitation for matrix converter/motor combinations is discussed

    ALK-positive histiocytosis: a new clinicopathologic spectrum highlighting neurologic involvement and responses to ALK inhibition

    ALK-positive histiocytosis is a rare subtype of histiocytic neoplasm first described in 2008 in three infants with multisystemic disease involving the liver and hematopoietic system. This entity has subsequently been documented in case reports and series to occupy a wider clinicopathologic spectrum with recurrent KIF5B-ALK fusions. The full clinicopathologic and molecular spectra of ALK-positive histiocytosis remain, however, poorly characterized. Here, we describe the largest study of ALK-positive histiocytosis to date, with detailed clinicopathologic data of 39 cases, including 37 cases with confirmed ALKrearrangements. The clinical spectrum comprised distinct clinical phenotypic groups: infants with multisystemic disease with liver and hematopoietic involvement, as originally described (Group 1A: 6/39), other patients with multisystemic disease (Group 1B: 10/39), and patients with single-system disease (Group 2: 23/39). Nineteen patients of the entire cohort (49%) had neurologic involvement (seven and twelve from Groups 1B and 2, respectively). Histology included classic xanthogranuloma features in almost one third of cases, whereas the majority displayed a more densely cellular, monomorphic appearance without lipidized histiocytes but sometimes more spindled or epithelioid morphology. Neoplastic histiocytes were positive for macrophage markers and often conferred strong expression of phosphorylated-ERK, confirming MAPK pathway activation. KIF5B-ALK fusions were detected in 27 patients, while CLTC-ALK, TPM3-ALK, TFG-ALK, EML4-ALK and DCTN1-ALK fusions were identified in single cases. Robust and durable responses were observed in 11/11 patients treated with ALK inhibition, ten with neurologic involvement.     Relish as a Candidate Marker for Transgenerational Immune Priming in a Dampwood Termite (Blattodae: Archeotermopsidae)

    Natural selection should favor the transfer of immune competence from one generation to the next in a context-dependent manner. Transgenerational immune priming (TGIP) is expected to evolve when species exploit pathogen-rich environments and exhibit extended overlap of parent–offspring generations. Dampwood termites are hemimetabolous, eusocial insects (Blattodea: Archeotermopsidae) that possess both of these traits. We predict that offspring of pathogen-exposed queens of Zootermopsis angusticollis will show evidence of a primed immune system relative to the offspring of unexposed controls. We found that Relish transcripts, one of two immune marker loci tested, were enhanced in two-day-old embryos when laid by Serratia-injected queens. These data implicate the immune deficiency (IMD) signaling pathway in TGIP. Although an independent antibacterial assay revealed that embryos do express antibacterial properties, these do not vary as a function of parental treatment. Taken together, Z. angusticollis shows transcriptional but not translational evidence for TGIP. This apparent incongruence between the transcriptional and antimicrobial response from termites suggests that effectors are either absent in two-day-old embryos or their activity is too subtle to detect with our antibacterial assay.
