    Get PDF
Capstone Project submitted to the Department of Engineering, Ashesi University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, May 2020A prototype of a wireless charging system was designed to tackle the problem of desks being messy as a result of electric cables that are used in charging mobile equipment and the inability to use the mobile devices when they are being charged. The design employs a method which is referred to as strongly coupled magnetic resonance which employs four coils to operate: two self-resonant and two inductors. The system was successfully designed in which power was successfully transmitted between the transmitter and receiver, and a range of about 6cm was achieved. Line of sight was not necessary for the transmission. The output was, however, a low voltage that could power an LED. Further work is required to be carried out to reduce the size of the system and incorporates it in charging mobile equipment.Ashesi Universit

    Get PDF
This study used co-integrated analysis and Granger causality test in modelling the Growth Domestics Products (GDP) of Ghana with other three selected macroeconomic such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), inflation and real exchange rate for the period of 1980 to 2013. Data were taken from the World Bank’s World Development Indicators and Bank of Ghana. The objectives of the study are to examine both long-run relationships and direction of causality between the GDP and the macroeconomic variables. The time series properties of the data were, first, analysed using the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test and KPSS test. The empirical results derived indicate that all the variables were stationary after their first differencing; i.e. variables are integrated of order one. The study further established that there is co-integration between the selected macroeconomic variables and GDP in Ghana indicating long run relationship. The above long term relation indicates that exchange rate and foreign direct investments have a negative effect on GDP whiles Inflation (CPI) showed a positive effect on GDP. The study further investigated the causal relationship using the Granger Causality analysis, which indicates a unidirectional causality between GDP growth rate and exchange rate and bidirectional causality between Inflation rate and Exchange, and also between Inflation rate and GDP, whiles FDI does not granger cause Inflation rate, exchange rate, GDP and visa versa in Ghana for the study period at 5%

Universal banks are the main controller of the financial system in Ghana performing financial intermediation. They control greater portion of the investment funds from domestic deposits and are the main creditors of the corporate bodies, SMEs and individual investors. This makes commercial banks exposed to the risk inherent in lending. The study investigated on the analysis of the impact of Basel accords on asset quality in banks in Ghana. The purpose of this study is to ascertain how banks manage non-performing assets using Basel accord principle that have being implemented by bank of Ghana and to know the impact of the Basel accord on non-performing assets. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. Through the use of descriptive and inferential statistics, this design was considered the best strategy to accomplish the objective of the study. The study targeted a population of 27 commercial banks in Ghana, using a period of 2008 to 2015. The study used primary data and secondary data to achieve. The study concluded that most banks have a sound credit risk management system and the senior management banks develop policies and procedures for identifying, measuring, monitoring and controlling credit risk. Banks implemented credit policies using Basel accord principles. The research also concluded that banks have implemented the guiding principles to great extent. One of the most important functions of management is to ensure that employee work is more satisfying and to reconcile employee motivation with organizational goals. With the diversity of current jobs, this is a dynamic challenge. What people value and enjoy is influenced by many factors, including the influence of different cultural backgrounds. This research report examines employee motivation and its impact on employee performance. The study examines some common theories of motivation that can be used in an organization to improve employee performance. The study showed that employees have their differences in terms of the concept of motivation. Various forms of theories of motivation in literature have been debated along with their applications and implications. Three questions were examined: What is motivation? What kind of motivation can best be used to increase employee performance? The results of the study show that motivation can increase or decrease employee performance. If the chosen form of motivation meets the needs of the employee, their performance increases. If, on the other hand, the chosen form of motivation does not satisfy the needs of the employee, the benefit decreases. It therefore encourages organizations to understand the motivating need of each employee to improve performance. A Multiple Colour Bobbin Winder: An Enhanced Accessory for Transforming Indigenous On-Loom Weaving

    Get PDF
Indigenous hand weaving is an ancient traditional handicraft practised in many cultures across Africa, Asia, Middle East, Europe and Latin America. The looms and accessories are made from local materials and the mechanism for their operation involves simple technologies that are easy to learn. These traditional hand weaving looms mostly produce long, narrow strips of patterned woven fabric that are sewn together to construct cloth, carpets and other specialized end-user woven products. Bobbin winding is an integral aspect of weft preparation for weaving. Bobbin winders used by cloth weavers in the indigenous Ghanaian textiles industry have capacity to produce single bobbins only at a time, which lengthens the yarn preparation and weaving periods, and reduced productivity of cloth weavers. The bobbin winder described in this article is semi-automatic, capable of winding multiple bobbins with single or multiple coloured yarns of uniform tension concurrently within a short time for higher rate production of woven fabrics in direct contrast with existing bobbin winders. This bobbin winder was based on the Universal Design Methodology and constructed with the sole aim of resolving limitations of existing bobbin winders in order to transform the traditional weaving industry. Testing the bobbin winder for broadloom weaving by 58 textiles students proved the technology is simple, efficient and effective; easy to manipulate and wind multiple bobbins within a short time. This implies time saving in weft preparation and hand weaving for increased productivity in Ghana’s indigenous textiles industry. The youth cannot be ignored in view of the vital roles they play in the socio- economic development of nations around the globe. Entrepreneurship education has been identified as one of the most innovative ways of arresting graduate unemployment around the globe. Youth unemployment has been on the increase in recent times partly due to traditional courses the youth pursue in most tertiary institutions in Ghana which have less linkage to the world of work. Youth unemployment policy features   prominently on the national agenda of most developing countries, including Ghana. Consequently, many graduates rely on the government to provide them jobs after school. It is against this backdrop that entrepreneurship education has been introduced in most tertiary institutions in Ghana to equip students with the much needed innovations and entrepreneurial skills to set up businesses as a way of relieving the government from the provision of jobs to the throng of unemployed graduates. This paper evaluates the entrepreneurship education in the Polytechnics in Ghana and how it is structured to meet the aspiration of the students. The paper also investigates students’ attitude towards the study of entrepreneurship. It also highlights students’ capacities to establish their own businesses after graduation and how they could raise funds and promote stronger relationships with the business community. It is hoped that this would go a long way to unearthing challenges students encounter in the study of entrepreneurship as a course. Determinants and convergence of income diversification in Ghanaian banks

    Get PDF
The study explores the determinants of income diversification, as well as, test for the existence of beta-convergence and sigma-convergence among Ghanaian banks. The study utilizes a dataset of 32 banks covering the periods 2000 to 2017. The panel corrected standard error ordinary least squares, fixed effects and system generalized methods of moments have been used. Both beta-convergence and sigma-convergence exist among Ghanaian banks; suggesting the presence of the catch-up effect and similarity of strategy over time. The risk profile and risk portfolio of banks affect their diversification strategy. Banks that are faced with high insolvency risk and liquidity risk tend to diversify while banks that are faced with low credit risk tend to diversify. Stable banks tend to adopt a diversification strategy even when they are exposed to credit risk. Network embeddedness drives diversification strategy. The implications of the study for practice, policy, and future research have been discussed
