Effects of sowing date and insecticides on cereal aphid populations and barley yellow dwarf virus on barley in Kenya
The effects of the date of sowing and insecticide sprays on aphid populations and barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) incidence in barley was studied in Mau Narok, Kenya. Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and Metopolophium dirhodum (WLK.) were common aphid species, but other cereal aphids present were Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch), Stiobion avenae (F.), Schizaphis grammum (Rond.) and Hysteroneura setaria Thom. The incidence of BYDV was significantly decreased in plots sown with seed that had been treated with imidacloprid (NTNâ33893, Gaucho) and subsequently sprayed with foliar insecticide (Cypermethrin). Yield loss due to BYDV was also significantly different between the treatments and between the earlyplanted and the lateâplanted crop (P < 0.05). Grain yield and 1000âgrain weight were not significantly different among insecticide treatments in the earlyâplanted crop. In the lateâplanted crop, the yield increase with seed treatment alone was highly significant (P < 0.001), with a yield increase of 36â43%, more than that of the untreated control. Grain yield was significantly (P < 0.05) negatively correlated with the total number of cereal aphids. as well as with the numbers of R. padi alone
All solutions of the n = 5 Lane-Emden equation
All real solutions of the Lane-Emden equation for n = 5 are obtained in terms
of Jacobian and Weierstrass elliptic functions. A new family of solutions is
found. It is expressed by remarkably simple formulae involving Jacobian
elliptic functions only. The general properties and discrete scaling symmetries
of these new solutions are discussed. We also comment on their possible

Predictive tracking with improved motion models for optical belt sorting
Optical belt sorters are a versatile means to sort bulk materials. In previous work, we presented a novel design of an optical belt sorter, which includes an area scan camera instead of a line scan camera. Line scan cameras, which are well-established in optical belt sorting, only allow for a single observation of each particle. Using multitarget tracking, the data of the area scan camera can be used to derive a part of the trajectory of each particle. The knowledge of the trajectories can be used to generate accurate predictions as to when and where each particle passes the separation mechanism. Accurate predictions are key to achieve high quality sorting results. The accuracy of the trajectories and the predictions heavily depends on the motion model used. In an evaluation based on a simulation that provides us with ground truth trajectories, we previously identified a bias in the temporal component of the prediction. In this paper, we analyze the simulation-based ground truth data of the motion of different bulk materials and derive models specifically tailored to the generation of accurate predictions for particles traveling on a conveyor belt. The derived models are evaluated using simulation data involving three different bulk materials. The evaluation shows that the constant velocity model and constant acceleration model can be outperformed by utilizing the similarities in the motion behavior of particles of the same type
Identification of novel aphid-killing bacteria to protect plants.
Aphids, including the peach-potato aphid, Myzus persicae, are major insect pests of agriculture and horticulture, and aphid control measures are limited. There is therefore an urgent need to develop alternative and more sustainable means of control. Recent studies have shown that environmental microbes have varying abilities to kill insects. We screened a range of environmental bacteria isolates for their abilities to kill target aphid species. Tests demonstrated the killing aptitude of these bacteria against six aphid genera (including Myzus persicae). No single bacterial strain was identified that was consistently toxic to insecticide-resistant aphid clones than susceptible clones, suggesting resistance to chemicals is not strongly correlated with bacterial challenge. Pseudomonas fluorescens PpR24 proved the most toxic to almost all aphid clones whilst exhibiting the ability to survive for over three weeks on three plant species at populations of 5â6 log CFUâcmâ2 leaf. Application of PpR24 to plants immediately prior to introducing aphids onto the plants led to a 68%, 57% and 69% reduction in aphid populations, after 21âdays, on Capsicum annuum, Arabidopsis thaliana and Beta vulgaris respectively. Together, these findings provide new insights into aphid susceptibility to bacterial infection with the aim of utilizing bacteria as effective biocontrol agents
Stability of oligosaccharides derived from lactulose during the processing of milk and apple juice
The scientific evidence on the bioactivity of oligosaccharides from lactulose has encouraged us to study their physicochemical modifications during the processing of milk and apple juice. The carbohydrate fraction with a degree of polymerization â„3 was stable in milk heated at temperatures up to 100°C for 30 min and in apple juice heated up to 90°C for 15 min. An assessment of the Maillard reaction in heated milk pointed out a higher formation of furosine in milk with oligosaccharides from lactulose as compared to its counterpart without this ingredient, due to a higher presence of galactose. The organoleptic properties of juice with oligosaccharides from lactulose were acceptable and similar to those of apple juice with commercial galactooligosaccharides. The results presented herein demonstrate that oligosaccharides from lactulose can be used as prebiotic ingredients in a wide range of functional foods, including those intended for diabetics and lactose intolerant individuals.This work has been supported by project AGL2011-27884 from Spanish Ministerio de EconomĂa y Competitividad.Peer Reviewe
Length of Stay: An Inappropriate Readout of the Success of Enhanced Recovery Programs
BACKGROUND: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs are designed to reduce hospital length of stay by shortening the postoperative recovery period. The intended effect of an accelerated recovery on the length of stay may be frustrated by a delayed discharge. This study was designed to assess the influence of an ERAS program on the proportion, appropriateness, and extent of delay in discharge. METHODS: Patients who enrolled in the ERAS program (n = 121) between 2003 and 2006 were compared with 52 patients who were managed traditionally in 2001. RESULTS: Ninety percent of the pre-ERAS patients and 87% of the ERAS patients were not discharged on the day that discharge criteria were fulfilled. The additional stay of 59% of the pre-ERAS patients and 69% of the ERAS patients was inappropriate. Wound care (15% in the pre-ERAS and 3% of the ERAS group) and observation of any symptoms pointing to an anastomotic leakage (10% in both groups) were the most important reasons for a medical appropriate delay of discharge. The extent of delay in discharge decreased significantly from a median of two days in the pre-ERAS group to a median of 1 day in the ERAS group (p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Reductions in length of stay up to a median of 2 days after start of an enhanced recovery program may relate to changes in organization of care and not to a shorter recovery period. Recovery statistics should replace or at least be added to the length of stay as outcome of enhanced recovery programs. Statistics of the gravitational force in various dimensions of space: from Gaussian to Levy laws
We discuss the distribution of the gravitational force created by a
Poissonian distribution of field sources (stars, galaxies,...) in different
dimensions of space d. In d=3, it is given by a Levy law called the Holtsmark
distribution. It presents an algebraic tail for large fluctuations due to the
contribution of the nearest neighbor. In d=2, it is given by a marginal
Gaussian distribution intermediate between Gaussian and Levy laws. In d=1, it
is exactly given by the Bernouilli distribution (for any particle number N)
which becomes Gaussian for N>>1. Therefore, the dimension d=2 is critical
regarding the statistics of the gravitational force. We generalize these
results for inhomogeneous systems with arbitrary power-law density profile and
arbitrary power-law force in a d-dimensional universe

Managing maize under pest species competition: is Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) maize the solution?
Transgenic crops that contain Cry genes from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been adopted by farmers over the last 17 years. Unlike traditional broad spectrum chemical insecticides, Bt's toxicity spectrum is relatively narrow and selective, which may indirectly benefit secondary insects that may become important pests. The economic damage caused by the rise of secondary pests could offset some or all of the benefits associated with the use of Bt varieties. We develop a bioeconomic model to analyze the interactions between primary and secondary insect populations and the impact of different management options on insecticide use and economic impact over time. Results indicate that some of the benefits associated with the adoption of genetically engineered insect resistant crops may be eroded when taking into account ecological dynamics. It is suggested that secondary pests could easily become key insect pests requiring additional measures - such as insecticide applications or stacked traits â to keep their populations under the economic threshold
Optimal numerical design of bucket elevators using discontinuous deformation analysis
Bucket elevators are efficient machines to transport granular materials in industrial and civil engineering applications. These materials are composed of hundreds, thousands or even more particles, the global behavior of which is defined by contact interactions. The first attempts to analyze the transportation of granular materials were treated by very simple continuum methods that do not take into account these interactions, producing simulations that do not fit the experimental results accurately. Given the internal discontinuity nature of granular media, it is reasonable to use numerical methods to model their behavior, such as discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA)-a member of the discrete element method family that started to be used in the 90s to analyze similar problems. The version of DDA used in the current work treats grains as rigid circular particles with friction, damping and eventually cohesion with the objective of simulating and analyzing in detail the discharge of granular materials with bucket elevators. A deterministic computer code has been implemented and validated against simplified analytical formulae and experimental results taken from the literature. This computer code is then used to obtain optimum two-dimensional bucket geometries under specific working conditions. The optimization aims to maximize transport distance and to minimize remaining material, taking into account bucket velocity and the properties of the grains. Mirid feeding preference as influenced by light and temperature mediated changes in plant nutrient concentration in cocoa
Cocoa mirids are the most important insect pests of cocoa in West Africa. This study investigated the effect of environmental parameters that are modulated by overhead shade, i.e. light intensity and temperature, on nutrient and phenolic concentrations in cocoa and their subsequent effect on mirid feeding. Eight-month-old cocoa seedlings were maintained for 50 days in two growth chambers set to day temperatures of 25oC or 30oC. Each chamber had sections with different light intensities (541, 365 and 181 ”molm-2s-1 PAR). For the field studies at Akim-Tafo in Ghana, eight-month-old plants of three cocoa clones were subjected to shaded (PAR= 180 ”mol m-ÂČ s-1, between 11:00 and 12:00) and unshaded (PAR= 1767 ”mol m-ÂČ s-1 between 11:00 and 12:00) treatments for 50 days after which nutrient measurements and mirid choice tests were carried out. No significant effect of environment was observed on the phenolic concentration of stems under controlled environment chamber conditions. However, in the field, the phenolic concentration of stems was significantly greater for unshaded compared with shaded plants (P=0.04). Under controlled conditions, the leaf nitrogen concentration increased slightly with light intensity (P=0.003). The same trend was seen in stems but only at 30oC. In the field, the impact of overhead shade on nitrogen varied between cocoa clones. The concentration of carbohydrates in both leaves and stems in the field was higher under unshaded conditions. When subjected to feeding tests, stems from unshaded cocoa had significantly more mirid feeding lesions (P=0.003) after 24 hours exposure to mirids compared to shaded cocoa. Mirid feeding therefore appears not to be deterred by the higher phenolic levels but rather there was a preference for cocoa tissue grown under unshaded conditions. These findings highlight the need to consider the growing environment of cocoa clones when screening for varieties with resistance to mirids
