Arthrogryposis in piglets

This report documents experimental reproduction of tetramelic arthrogryposis in purebred Yorkshire swine by breeding trials. Data from the trials indigated arthrogryposis may be due to homozygosity of a simple autosomal recessive gene. No affected pig was observed to be alive at parturition, although most had been alive in utero just prior to delivery. Other than dystocia observed in the sows, no other significant clinical findings were noted. The condition was noted in five litters from two sows which were bred to the same boar. Hubungan Kedisiplinan terhadap Hasil Belajar Siswa Kelas V di SD Negeri 10 Banda Aceh

Penelitian yang berjudul “Hubungan Kedisiplinan terhadap Hasil Belajar Siswa Kelas V di SD Negeri 10 Banda Aceh” ini mengangkat masalah bagaimana hubungan kedisiplinan terhadap hasil belajar siswa kelas V di SD Negeri 10 Banda Aceh. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan kedisiplinan terhadap hasil belajar siswa kelas V di SD Negeri 10 Banda Aceh. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas V di SD Negeri 10 Banda Aceh yang berjumlah 6 orang. Subjek dipilih dengan tingkat kedisiplinan yang berbeda yaitu 2 siswa yang tingkat kedisiplinannya tinggi, 2 siswa yang tingkat kedisiplinannya sedang, dan 2 siswa yang tingkat kedisiplinannya rendah. Subjek dipilih menggunakan purposive sampling dan berdasarkan observasi serta konsultasi dengan wali kelas V.Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian deskriptif. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data dilakukan melalui data reduction, data display, dan verification serta menggunakan rumus persentase dan rumus rata-rata.Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa kedisiplinan memiliki hubungan terhadap hasil belajar siswa. Dari 6 siswa, 4 siswa yang tingkat kedisiplinan dan hasil belajarnya sesuai sedangkan 2 siswa lagi tingkat kedisiplinan dan hasil belajarnya kurang sesuai. Ini berarti tingkat kesesuaian antara kedisiplinan dengan hasil belajar siswa berada pada kategori sedang (66,7%).Simpulan penelitian ini adalah bahwa kedisiplinan mempengaruhi hasil belajar tetapi tidak sepenuhnya hasil belajar dipengaruhi oleh kedisiplinan. Hal ini dikarenakan hasil belajar tidak hanya dipengaruhi oleh kedisiplinan saja tetapi juga dipengaruhi oleh faktor-faktor yang lain seperti keluarga, sekolah, masyarakat, minat, kecerdasan, bakat, motivasi, dan sebagainya

Discriminating active from latent tuberculosis in patients presenting to community clinics.

BACKGROUND: Because of the high global prevalence of latent TB infection (LTBI), a key challenge in endemic settings is distinguishing patients with active TB from patients with overlapping clinical symptoms without active TB but with co-existing LTBI. Current methods are insufficiently accurate. Plasma proteomic fingerprinting can resolve this difficulty by providing a molecular snapshot defining disease state that can be used to develop point-of-care diagnostics. METHODS: Plasma and clinical data were obtained prospectively from patients attending community TB clinics in Peru and from household contacts. Plasma was subjected to high-throughput proteomic profiling by mass spectrometry. Statistical pattern recognition methods were used to define mass spectral patterns that distinguished patients with active TB from symptomatic controls with or without LTBI. RESULTS: 156 patients with active TB and 110 symptomatic controls (patients with respiratory symptoms without active TB) were investigated. Active TB patients were distinguishable from undifferentiated symptomatic controls with accuracy of 87% (sensitivity 84%, specificity 90%), from symptomatic controls with LTBI (accuracy of 87%, sensitivity 89%, specificity 82%) and from symptomatic controls without LTBI (accuracy 90%, sensitivity 90%, specificity 92%). CONCLUSIONS: We show that active TB can be distinguished accurately from LTBI in symptomatic clinic attenders using a plasma proteomic fingerprint. Translation of biomarkers derived from this study into a robust and affordable point-of-care format will have significant implications for recognition and control of active TB in high prevalence settings

: The purpose of this research is to find out the partial effect of Return On Equity(ROE)and Debt to Equity Ratio(DER) on dividend policy and the company's age as variables thatmoderating the influence ROE and DER against dividend policy. The populations are142manufacturing companies that listed at Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in 2014. Purposivesampling technique that used result in 45 companies. The data is analyzed using multipleregression analysis and moderation analysis using residual test.The results of multiple regressionanalysis shows that the ROE does not have a significant effect on dividend policy, DER hassignificant negative effect on dividend policy, while the result of moderation analysis usingresidual test shows that the age of the companies does not moderate the influence of ROE towardsdividend policy and the influence of DER towards dividend policy as well

Masculinity at work: The experiences of men in female dominated occupations

This paper presents the findings of a research project on the implications of men's non-traditional career choices for their experiences within the organization and for gender identity. The research is based on 40 in-depth interviews with male workers from four occupational groups: librarian-ship, cabin crew, nurses and primary school teachers. Results suggest a typology of male workers in female dominated occupations: seekers (who actively seek the career), finders (who find the occupation in the process of making general career decisions) and settlers (who settle into the career after periods of time in mainly male dominated occupations). Men benefit from their minority status through assumptions of enhanced leadership (the assumed authority effect), by being given differential treatment (the special consideration effect) and being associated with a more careerist attitude to work (the career effect). At the same time, they feel comfortable working with women (the zone of comfort effect). Despite this comfort, men adopt a variety of strategies to re-establish a masculinity that has been undermined by the 'feminine' nature of their work. These include re-labeling, status enhancement and distancing from the feminine. The dynamics of maintaining and reproducing masculinities within the non-traditional work setting are discussed in the light of recent theorising around gender, masculinity and work

Gamma radiation survey of the LDEF spacecraft

The retrieval of the Long Duration Exposure Facility spacecraft in January 1990 after nearly six years in orbit offered a unique opportunity to study the long term buildup of induced radioactivity in the variety of materials on board. We conducted the first complete gamma-ray survey of a large spacecraft on LDEF shortly after its return to earth. A surprising observation was the Be-7 activity which was seen primarily on the leading edge of the satellite, implying that it was picked up by LDEF in orbit. This is the first known evidence for accretion of a radioactive isotope onto an orbiting spacecraft. Other isotopes observed during the survey, the strongest being Na-22, are all attributed to activation of spacecraft components. Be-7 is a spallation product of cosmic rays on nitrogen and oxygen in the upper atmosphere. However, the observed density is much greater than expected due to cosmic-ray production in situ. This implies transport of Be-7 from much lower altitudes up to the LDEF orbit

A Phase Transition between Small and Large Field Models of Inflation

We show that models of inflection point inflation exhibit a phase transition from a region in parameter space where they are of large field type to a region where they are of small field type. The phase transition is between a universal behavior, with respect to the initial condition, at the large field region and non-universal behavior at the small field region. The order parameter is the number of e-foldings. We find integer critical exponents at the transition between the two phases.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figure
