Second harmonic light scattering induced by defects in the twist-bend nematic phase of liquid crystal dimers
The nematic twist-bend (NTB) phase, exhibited by certain thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) dimers, represents a new orientationally ordered mesophase -- the first distinct nematic variant discovered in many years. The NTB phase is distinguished by a heliconical winding of the average molecular long axis (director) with a remarkably short (nanoscale) pitch and, in systems of achiral dimers, with an equal probability to form right- and left-handed domains. The NTB structure thus provides another fascinating example of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in nature. The order parameter driving the formation of the heliconical state has been theoretically conjectured to be a polarization field, deriving from the bent conformation of the dimers, that rotates helically with the same nanoscale pitch as the director field. It therefore presents a significant challenge for experimental detection. Here we report a second harmonic light scattering (SHLS) study on two achiral, NTB-forming LCs, which is sensitive to the polarization field due to micron-scale distortion of the helical structure associated with naturally-occurring textural defects. These defects are parabolic focal conics of smectic-like ``pseudo-layers", defined by planes of equivalent phase in a coarse-grained description of the NTB state. Our SHLS data are explained by a coarse-grained free energy density that combines a Landau-deGennes expansion of the polarization field, the elastic energy of a nematic, and a linear coupling between the two
Time Domain Explorations With Digital Sky Surveys
One of the new frontiers of astronomical research is the exploration of time
variability on the sky at different wavelengths and flux levels. We have
carried out a pilot project using DPOSS data to study strong variables and
transients, and are now extending it to the new Palomar-QUEST synoptic sky
survey. We report on our early findings and outline the methodology to be
implemented in preparation for a real-time transient detection pipeline. In
addition to large numbers of known types of highly variable sources (e.g., SNe,
CVs, OVV QSOs, etc.), we expect to find numerous transients whose nature may be
established by a rapid follow-up. Whereas we will make all detected variables
publicly available through the web, we anticipate that email alerts would be
issued in the real time for a subset of events deemed to be the most
interesting. This real-time process entails many challenges, in an effort to
maintain a high completeness while keeping the contamination low. We will
utilize distributed Grid services developed by the GRIST project, and implement
a variety of advanced statistical and machine learning techniques.Comment: 5 pages, 2 postscript figures, uses adassconf.sty. To be published

The QUEST large area CCD camera
We have designed, constructed, and put into operation a very large area CCD camera that covers the field of view of the 1.2 m Samuel Oschin Schmidt Telescope at the Palomar Observatory. The camera consists of 112 CCDs arranged in a mosaic of four rows with 28 CCDs each. The CCDs are 600 x 2400 pixel Sarnoff thinned, back-illuminated devices with 13 ”m x 13 ”m pixels. The camera covers an area of 4.6° x 3.6° on the sky with an active area of 9.6 deg_2. This camera has been installed at the prime focus of the telescope and commissioned, and scientific-quality observations on the Palomar-QUEST Variability Sky Survey were started in 2003 September. The design considerations, construction features, and performance parameters of this camera are described in this paper
The fundamental problem of command : plan and compliance in a partially centralised economy
When a principal gives an order to an agent and advances resources for its implementation, the temptations for the agent to shirk or steal from the principal rather than comply constitute the fundamental problem of command. Historically, partially centralised command economies enforced compliance in various ways, assisted by nesting the fundamental problem of exchange within that of command. The Soviet economy provides some relevant data. The Soviet command system combined several enforcement mechanisms in an equilibrium that shifted as agents learned and each mechanism's comparative costs and benefits changed. When the conditions for an equilibrium disappeared, the system collapsed.Comparative Economic Studies (2005) 47, 296â314. doi:10.1057/palgrave.ces.810011
Micro computed tomography images of capillary actions in rough and irregular granular materials
The present work investigates the effect of both surface roughness and particle morphology on the retention behaviour of granular materials via X-ray micro-computed tomography (\ub5CT) observations. X-ray \ub5CT images were taken on two types of spherical glass beads (i.e. smooth and rough) and two different sands (i.e. natural and roughened). Each sample was subjected to drainage and soaking paths consisting in a multiphase âstaticâ flow of potassium iodine (KI) brine (wetting phase) and dry air (non-wetting phase). Tomograms were obtained at different saturation states ranging from fully brine saturated to air dry conditions with 6.2 ÎŒm voxel size resolution. The data acquisition and pre-processing are here described while all data, a total of 48 tomograms, are made publicly available. The combined dataset offers new opportunities to study the influence of surface roughness and particle morphology on capillary actions as well as supporting validation of pore-scale models of multiphase flow in granular materials
Identification of Non-unitary triplet pairing in a heavy Fermion superconductor UPt_3
A NMR experiment recently done by Tou et al. on a heavy Fermion
superconductor UPt is interpreted in terms of a non-unitary spin-triplet
pairing state which we have been advocating. The proposed state successfully
explains various aspects of the seemingly complicated Knight shift behaviors
probed for major orientations, including a remarkable d-vector rotation under
weak fields. This entitles UPt as the first example that a charged many
body system forms a spin-triplet odd-par ity pairing at low temperatures and
demonstrates unambiguously that the putative spin-orbit coupling in UPt is
weak.Comment: 4 pages, 2 eps figures, to be published in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 67

Discovery of the Optical Transient of GRB 990308
The optical transient of the faint gamma-ray burst GRB 990308 was detected by the QUEST camera on the Venezuelan 1 m Schmidt telescope starting 3.28 hr after the burst. Our photometry gives V= 18.32 ± 0.07, R = 18.14 ± 0. 06, B =18.65, and R=18.22 ± 0.05 for times ranging from 3.28 to 3.47 hr after the burst. The colors correspond to a spectral slope of close to f â v^1/3 . Within the standard synchrotron ïŹreball model, this rquires that the external medium be less dense than 10^4 cm^-3, the electrons contain more than 20% of the shock energy, and the magnetic ïŹeld energy be less than 24% of the energy in the electrons for normal interstellar or circumstellar densities. We also report upper limits of V \u3e 12.0 at 132 s (with LOTIS), V \u3e 13.4 from 132 to 1029 s (with LOTIS), V \u3e 15.3 at 28.2 minutes (with Super-LOTIS), and a 8.5 GHz ïŹux of less than 114 ÎŒJy at 110 days (with the Very Large Array). Wisconsin-Indiana-Yale-NOAO 3.5 m and Keck 10 m telescopes reveal this location to be empty of any host galaxy to R \u3e 25.7and K \u3e 123.3. The lack of a host galaxy likely implies that it is either substantially subluminous or more distant than a redshift of âŒ1.2
