Three intervening galaxy absorbers towards GRB060418: faint and dusty?
We present an analysis of three strong, intervening Mg II absorption systems
(z_abs = 0.603, 0.656, 1.107) towards the optical afterglow of gamma-ray burst
(GRB) 060418. From high resolution UVES spectra we measure metal column
densities and find that the highest redshift absorber exhibits a large amount
of dust depletion compared with DLAs seen in QSO spectra. The intervening z_abs
= 1.107 absorber is also unusual in exhibiting a clear 2175 A bump, the first
time this feature has been definitively detected in a GRB spectrum. The GRB
afterglow spectrum is best fit with a two component extinction curve: an SMC
extinction law at z=1.49 (the redshift of the host) with E(B-V) = 0.07+-0.01
and a Galactic extinction curve at z ~ 1.1 with E(B-V) = 0.08+-0.01. We also
present a moderately deep NTT R-band image of the GRB060418 field and
spectroscopy of four galaxies within 1 arcminute. None of these objects has a
redshift that matches any of the intervening absorbers, and we conclude that
the galaxies responsible for the two intervening Mg II absorbers at z ~ 0.6
have luminosities ~<0.3 L^star.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (Letters), 5 pages. Updated with

âIt's all the way you look at it, you knowâ: reading Bill âBojanglesâ Robinson's film career
This paper engages with a major paradox in African American tap dancer Bill âBojanglesâ Robinson's film image â namely, its concurrent adherences to and contestations of dehumanising racial iconography â to reveal the complex and often ambivalent ways in which identity is staged and enacted. Although Robinson is often understood as an embodiment of popular cultural imagery historically designed to dehumanise African Americans, this paper shows that Robinson's artistry displaces these readings by providing viewing pleasure for black, as much as white, audiences. Robinson's racially segregated scenes in Dixiana (1930) and Hooray for Love (1935) illuminate classical Hollywood's racial codes, whilst also showing how his inclusion within these otherwise all-white films provides grounding for creative and self-reflexive artistry. The films' references to Robinson's stage image and artistry overlap with minstrelsy-derived constructions of âblacknessâ, with the effect that they heighten possible interpretations of his cinematic persona by evading representational conclusion. Ultimately, Robinson's films should be read as sites of representational struggle that help to uncover the slipperiness of performances of African American identities in 1930s Hollywood
Intrinsic Thermal Sensing Controls Proteolysis of Yersinia Virulence Regulator RovA
Pathogens, which alternate between environmental reservoirs and a mammalian host, frequently use thermal sensing devices to adjust virulence gene expression. Here, we identify the Yersinia virulence regulator RovA as a protein thermometer. Thermal shifts encountered upon host entry lead to a reversible conformational change of the autoactivator, which reduces its DNA-binding functions and renders it more susceptible for proteolysis. Cooperative binding of RovA to its target promoters is significantly reduced at 37°C, indicating that temperature control of rovA transcription is primarily based on the autoregulatory loop. Thermally induced reduction of DNA-binding is accompanied by an enhanced degradation of RovA, primarily by the Lon protease. This process is also subject to growth phase control. Studies with modified/chimeric RovA proteins indicate that amino acid residues in the vicinity of the central DNA-binding domain are important for proteolytic susceptibility. Our results establish RovA as an intrinsic temperature-sensing protein in which thermally induced conformational changes interfere with DNA-binding capacity, and secondarily render RovA susceptible to proteolytic degradation
