Equitable Strategies: Broadening Opportunities for Students in Public Education
In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that public education is a right which must be made available to all on equal terms. Despite the ruling, the American education system is still not equitable for all students. Children of color (Black, Latino, Native Americans) or of lower income are more likely to jump over several hurdles to get to the finish line. Meanwhile, white and wealthy children will cross the finish line without going through a single hurdle. The hurdles begin at early childhood and the final hurdle is college graduation. Some of these disparities include racial bias, the burden of poverty, funding differences, and school discipline. As teachers, we must find innovative solutions to ensure that students receive the customized services they need to be successful in their learning goal, which supports their lifelong careers and succes

Aphra Behn and Daniel Defoe both manifest a strong interest in the courtesan, a female figure whose unusual success wins her autonomy from sexual and economic subjugation. In order to remain self-governing, Angellica Bianca and La Nuche of Behn\u27s Rover plays and Defoe\u27s Roxana must pay singular heed to their economic self-interest while forsaking the prospect of genuine romantic love. However, whereas Behn\u27s courtesans undergo sexual reformations --figured as the acceptance of love (and marriage) and the resulting loss of independence--to their economic detriment, Roxana maintains the emotional reticence that allows her to continue capitalizing fully on her sexual allure. By discarding the romanticism present in Behn\u27s plays, Defoe offers less compromised social criticism, a more realistic depiction of the sexual and legal injustices that make Roxana\u27s vice a defensible alternative to either scarce, drudging employment or the captivity of marriage
Jet Production in Polarized Lepton-Hadron Scattering
We calculate exact analytical expressions for \oas 3-jet and \oasz \\ 4-jet
cross sections in polarized deep inelastic lepton nucleon scattering.
Introducing an invariant jet definition scheme, we present differential
distributions of 3- and 4-jet cross sections in the basic kinematical variables
and as well as total jet cross sections and show their dependence on
the chosen spin-dependent (polarized) parton distributions. Noticebly
differences in the predictions are found for the two extreme choices, i.e. a
large negative sea-quark density or a large positive gluon density. Therefore,
it may be possible to discriminate between different parametrizations of
polarized parton densities, and hence between the different physical pictures

Accessing directly the strange quark content of the proton at HERA
We investigate a double-spin asymmetry for the semi-inclusive
hyperon production in the longitudinally deep inelastic lepton-proton
scattering, the sign of which can provide us with important information about
the strange quark helicity distribution in the proton.On the basis of the
interpretation of the longitudinal deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering
data as a negative strange quark polarization in the proton and the preliminary
results on the measurement of the longitudinal polarization at the
resonance in electron-positron annihilation,we predict a minus sign for the
suggested observable. The experimental condition required for our suggestion is
met by the HERA facilities, so the asymmetry considered can be measured by the

Calculating Kaon Fragmentation Functions from NJL-Jet Model
The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) - Jet model provides a sound framework for
calculating the fragmentation functions in an effective chiral quark theory,
where the momentum and isospin sum rules are satisfied without the introduction
of ad hoc parameters. Earlier studies of the pion fragmentation functions using
the NJL model within this framework showed qualitative agreement with the
empirical parameterizations. Here we extend the NJL-Jet model by including the
strange quark. The corrections to the pion fragmentation functions and
corresponding kaon fragmentation functions are calculated using the elementary
quark to quark-meson fragmentation functions from NJL. The results for the kaon
fragmentation functions exhibit a qualitative agreement with the empirical
parameterizations, while the unfavored strange quark fragmentation to pions is
shown to be of the same order of magnitude as the unfavored light quark's. The
results of these studies are expected to provide important guidance for the
analysis of a large variety of semi-inclusive data.Comment: 9 pages, 14 figure
Modeling physical and chemical climate of the northeastern United States for a geographic information system
A model of physical and chemical climate was developed for New York and New England that can be used in a GIs for integration with ecosystem models. The variables included are monthly average maximum and minimum daily temperatures, precipitation, humidity, and solar radiation, as well as annual atmospheric deposition of sulfur and nitrogen. Equations generated from regional data bases were combined with a digital elevation model of the region to generate digital coverages of each variable
