A technique for the measurement and possible rehabilitation of Visual Neglect using the Leap Sensor
Visual Neglect is a common neuropsychological deficit associated with a
person having a Stroke [1]. This deficit is manifested by a Stroke patient’s
inability to notice things usually in the left hand side of their visual space.
This has a serious impact on their daily lives as they fail to notice obstacles
while walking or leave half of a meal uneaten because they are unaware of
its existence. Currently, pen and paper-based techniques are used to assess
the presence of Visual neglect in patients and there have been a number of
rehabilitative programs developed to try and ameliorate the symptoms of
Visual Neglect with limited success [2]. Using the Leap Sensor, this project
sets out to develop a novel measurement paradigm for the detection and
diagnosis of visual neglect as well as laying the ground work for developing
a novel rehabilitative intervention (a means of helping stroke patients to
either recover from visual neglect or make adaptations do lessen the effect
of visual neglect). In addition, we replace pen and paper tests with a web
based system which enables professionals to complete such assessments of
visual neglect virtually and archive their results
Russia's war on Ukraine and the rise of the Middle Corridor as a third vector of Eurasian connectivity: connecting Europe and Asia via Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Turkey
Among the many significant geopolitical consequences of Russia's war against Ukraine has been the reinvigoration of the Middle Corridor, both as a regional economic zone comprising Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Turkey but also as an increasingly attractive alternative route between Europe and China. Russia's war has disrupted overland connectivity via the New Eurasian Land Bridge, also known as Northern Corridor, which passes through - now heavily sanctioned - Russian and Belarusian territory. While the Middle Corridor will not be able to fully replace the Northern Corridor, regional integration along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route is likely to increase its potential at the expense of Russia in the long-term. Ankara's close cultural ties with the Central Asian republics combined with the latter's willingness to diversify their foreign relations away from Moscow and Beijing provide Turkey with greater leverage in the region. The EU and Turkey share a common interest in enhancing Eurasian connectivity for several reasons: to promote peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus and Central Asia, to enhance commercial access to Central Asia, to increase the resilience of European supply chains, and to diversify European energy supplies. Strengthening Eurasian connectivity would also work to balance Russian, Chinese, and Iranian influence in Central Asia. (author's abstract

Alpha-canonical form representation of the open loop dynamics of the Space Shuttle main engine
A parameter and structure estimation technique for multivariable systems is used to obtain a state space representation of open loop dynamics of the space shuttle main engine in alpha-canonical form. The parameterization being used is both minimal and unique. The simplified linear model may be used for fault detection studies and control system design and development
A simplified dynamic model of the Space Shuttle main engine
A simplified model is presented of the space shuttle main engine (SSME) dynamics valid within the range of operation of the engine. This model is obtained by linking the linearized point models obtained at 25 different operating points of SSME. The simplified model was developed for use with a model-based diagnostic scheme for failure detection and diagnostics studies, as well as control design purposes
