    The nature and experiences of the dyslexia population in higher education : a case study

    This research investigated factors influencing the approach of dyslexic higher education students to support in one UK higher education institution. While considering the nature of the population of dyslexic students as a whole, it also looked for potential sub-groups with a view to differentiating support needs and usage. The research considered data for past dyslexic students of the institution, over nearly a decade, in the context of national data (HESA and UCAS) to establish the nature of the population being investigated. A range of measures were completed by current students of the institution, addressing: aspects of experiences of dyslexia; personality; learning mode preferences; and support use, including DSA Needs Assessment recommendations. These findings, in conjunction with WAIS intelligence test indices scores (where available from dyslexia assessments), were statistically analysed where appropriate. The research concluded with interviews of selected participants. The main findings included a trend of late identification of women. Evidence of the impact of dyslexia recognition and support during compulsory schooling was seen in subsequent support use and outcomes. How students attributed outcomes at school was important for self-concept and motivation, although this was not always related to recognition of dyslexia or support. The Perceptual Organisation Index of the WAIS-III test was central to grouping participant cases. Patterns were seen in use of higher education support, relating to age of identification as dyslexic, age when starting the course and gender. The implications include the way Learning Mode preference awareness has a role in developing self-awareness and meta-cognitive skill. Study environment requirements are an area of student needs that would benefit from further investigation. Feedback on Needs Assessment recommendations highlights the need for more training opportunities and better ways to introduce students to assistive technology before recommendations were made. Better understanding of support use patterns has implications for support resource management

    Non-random dispersal in the butterfly Maniola jurtina: implications for metapopulation models

    The dispersal patterns of animals are important in metapopulation ecology because they affect the dynamics and survival of populations. Theoretical models assume random dispersal but little is known in practice about the dispersal behaviour of individual animals or the strategy by which dispersers locate distant habitat patches. In the present study, we released individual meadow brown butterflies (Maniola jurtina) in a non-habitat and investigated their ability to return to a suitable habitat. The results provided three reasons for supposing that meadow brown butterflies do not seek habitat by means of random flight. First, when released within the range of their normal dispersal distances, the butterflies orientated towards suitable habitat at a higher rate than expected at random. Second, when released at larger distances from their habitat, they used a non-random, systematic, search strategy in which they flew in loops around the release point and returned periodically to it. Third, butterflies returned to a familiar habitat patch rather than a non-familiar one when given a choice. If dispersers actively orientate towards or search systematically for distant habitat, this may be problematic for existing metapopulation models, including models of the evolution of dispersal rates in metapopulations

    Significance of soil organic phosphorus to plant growth

    The first indication that soils contain organic phosphorus was obtained in 1844 by Mulder (20), in experiments wherein he could not obtain phosphorus-free preparations of certain soil organic matter fractions. Since the time of Mulder, a number of investigations have dealt specifically with the problem of soil organic phosphorus, and it is now generally recognized that a portion of the soil phosphorus occurs in organic forms. The distribution of organic phosphorus in different soil types and groups has been investigated in only a preliminary way, but it has become apparent that the quantities of organic phosphorus are correlated with the quantities of soil organic matter. In Iowa and other North Central states, there are extensive areas of soils that contain relatively large quantities of both substances

    The evolution of gregariousness in parasitoid wasps

    Data are assembled on the clutch-size strategies adopted by extant species of parasitoid wasp. These data are used to reconstruct the history of clutch-size evolution in the group using a series of plausible evolutionary assumptions. Extant families are either entirely solitary, both solitary and gregarious, or else clutch size is unknown. Parsimony analysis suggests that the ancestors of most families were solitary, a result which is robust to different phylogenetic relationships and likely data inadequacies. This implies that solitariness was ubiquitous throughout the initial radiation of the group, and that transitions to gregariousness have subsequently occurred a minimum of 43 times in several, but not all lineages. Current data suggest that species-rich and small-bodied lineages are more likely to have evolved gregariousness, and contain more species with small gregarious brood sizes. I discuss the implications of these data for clutch-size theory

    Student nurses’ needs for developing basic study skills

    One of the key responsibilities of the nurse educator is to develop student nurses’ abilities regarding self-directed study. Self-directed study requires inter alia, the ability to find information, synthesis and consequent application and integration of the information in practice. The development of the abovementioned skills does not only imply a multidimensional approach to the student in totality, but also requires the meticulous involvement of the student in her/his own learning. The latter also assumes that students possess certain essential skills relevant to learning and studying. From the literature it is evident that secondary schooling in general, does not prepare students adequately for tertiary education. This research intended to find answers to the questions whether student nurses require guidance regarding the development of specifically identified study skills, the guidance provided and whether the guidance provided was sufficient. A descriptive survey was done in order to address the above questions. The research instruments (questionnaires) were completed (during 1997) by nurse educators and student nurses in the Western Cape. On completion of the analysis and interpretation of the data, the researcher concluded that student nurses expressed a need for more guidance regarding the development of basic study skills ant that existing student support programs did not address all these needs adequately. Furthermore, it was concluded that the language medium of the prescribed study material had a profound effect on the learning and study proceses of student nurses. Based on the conclusion, various recommendations were made concerning different facets of the teaching/learning event., in order to enhance students’ learning and studying skills. Mastery of these skills can be regarded as being important prerequisites for effective, responsible, independent professional practice

    Highly consistent genetic alterations in childhood adrenocortical tumours detected by comparative genomic hybridization

    We have examined 11 cases of childhood adrenocortical tumours for copy number changes using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). The changes seen are highly consistent between cases, and are independent of tumour type (carcinoma versus adenoma) or the presence of a germline TP53 mutation. The regions of chromosomal gain and loss identified in this study indicate the location of genes that are potentially important in the development and progression of childhood adrenocortical tumours. Finally, the copy number changes identified in childhood tumours are distinctly different to those seen in adult cases (Kjellman et al (1996) Cancer Res56: 4219–4223), and we propose that this indicates that childhood tumours are of embryonal origin. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig

    Infrared composition of the Large Magellanic Cloud

    The evolution of galaxies and the history of star formation in the Universe are among the most important topics in today's astrophysics. Especially, the role of small, irregular galaxies in the star-formation history of the Universe is not yet clear. Using the data from the AKARI IRC survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud at 3.2, 7, 11, 15, and 24 {\mu}m wavelengths, i.e., at the mid- and near-infrared, we have constructed a multiwavelength catalog containing data from a cross-correlation with a number of other databases at different wavelengths. We present the separation of different classes of stars in the LMC in color-color, and color-magnitude, diagrams, and analyze their contribution to the total LMC flux, related to point sources at different infrared wavelengths

    â„“-space spectroscopy of the Cosmic Microwave Background with the BOOMERanG experiment

    The BOOMERanG experiment has recently produced detailed maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background, where sub-horizon structures are resolved with good signal to noise ratio. A power spectrum (spherical harmonics) analysis of the maps detects three peaks, at multipoles â„“ = (213_(-13)^(+10)),(541_(-32)^(+20))(845_(-25)^(+12)). In this paper we discuss the data analysis and the implications of these results for cosmology

    Novel prokaryotic expression of thioredoxin-fused insulinoma associated protein tyrosine phosphatase 2 (IA-2), its characterization and immunodiagnostic application

    Background The insulinoma associated protein tyrosine phosphatase 2 (IA-2) is one of the immunodominant autoantigens involved in the autoimmune attack to the beta-cell in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. In this work we have developed a complete and original process for the production and recovery of the properly folded intracellular domain of IA-2 fused to thioredoxin (TrxIA-2ic) in Escherichia coli GI698 and GI724 strains. We have also carried out the biochemical and immunochemical characterization of TrxIA-2icand design variants of non-radiometric immunoassays for the efficient detection of IA-2 autoantibodies (IA-2A). Results The main findings can be summarized in the following statements: i) TrxIA-2ic expression after 3 h of induction on GI724 strain yielded ≈ 10 mg of highly pure TrxIA-2ic/L of culture medium by a single step purification by affinity chromatography, ii) the molecular weight of TrxIA-2ic (55,358 Da) could be estimated by SDS-PAGE, size exclusion chromatography and mass spectrometry, iii) TrxIA-2ic was properly identified by western blot and mass spectrometric analysis of proteolytic digestions (63.25 % total coverage), iv) excellent immunochemical behavior of properly folded full TrxIA-2ic was legitimized by inhibition or displacement of [35S]IA-2 binding from IA-2A present in Argentinian Type 1 Diabetic patients, v) great stability over time was found under proper storage conditions and vi) low cost and environmentally harmless ELISA methods for IA-2A assessment were developed, with colorimetric or chemiluminescent detection. Conclusions E. coli GI724 strain emerged as a handy source of recombinant IA-2ic, achieving high levels of expression as a thioredoxin fusion protein, adequately validated and applicable to the development of innovative and cost-effective immunoassays for IA-2A detection in most laboratories.Fil: Guerra, Luciano Lucas.
