A Better Engineering Design: Low Cost Assistance Kit for Manual Wheelchair Users with Enhanced Obstacle Detection

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a better engineering design of an assistance kit for manual wheelchair users. The design is aimed  to enhance the detection of obstacles in the travelling path of the wheelchair  user at low cost. This is facilitated by microcontroller and sensor technologies. The proposed design provides the intended user with obstacle detection, light detection, a light emitting diode (LED) emergency light system, and an emergency alarm system. The microcontroller is the main controller that receives input from the sensors and produces output to the light crystal display (LCD) screen, the LED emergency light system, and the emergency alarm system. An ultrasonic sensor is used to detect the presence of obstacles directly behind the wheelchair. If any obstacle exists behind the wheelchair within a set range, the system will alert the wheelchair user through different alarm sounds. In the case of absence of light, the LED emergency light system is activated and turns on a light source, which is attached to the wheelchair to provide a bright and clear path for the user. The distance between the obstacle and the wheelchair, and the status of the LED emergency light system are displayed on the LCD screen

Design of intelligent traffic controlling system using RF transponder

    No full text
Nowadays, the movement control is troublesome for the expanding traffic. The quick addition in vehicular excursions without relating growing in street space is achieving generous blockage in various parts. This makes trouble for the emergency vehicles such as ambulance, fire emergency and VIP vehicles to travel through the congested traffic. By analyzing different proposed systems, another arrangement can be actualized by making the traffic lights somewhat wise. To this issue, a framework utilizing computational intelligence is proposed to assign clear path for the emergency vehicles with the utilization of RF transponder and microcontroller. The significant part of this work is focused on reducing the inertness of the emergency vehicles with least interruption to customary traffic stream

Self-monitoring framework for patients in IoT-based healthcare system

With the recent developments in Internet of Things (IoT) and the increase of smartphone users, patient’s health can be monitored without visiting the hospital for medical services. Nowadays, the cost of healthcare is high and insufficient of workforce in the hospital caused the patient unwilling to visit the hospital. The proposed work is to design a monitoring system using sensor and microcontroller to be used by the patients at their place (eg. home). This paper discusses the designing process of the framework. This system will allow the patient to measure their pulse rate and body temperature by using sensors and data collected from the sensor are integrated by using a microcontroller. These acquired patients data could be viewed in mobile application. In addition, the system will provide features such as consultation or chat facility and medical reminder to further improve the feasibility of patients’ health care system

With the expanding number in the elderly populace, as well as the changes in lifestyle emergence that causes several chronic diseases. Stroke is one of the main chronic disease that leads to disability and death. So, it is necessary to monitor the health status of the patients to prevent from fatal disorders. If affected by stroke, in order to improve the function and gain as much independent as possible, the stroke patients have to do some rehabilitation. The selection of medicinal services innovation is promising to improve the personal satisfaction for endless illness patients and the elderly and an individual. This paper proposes a promising innovation by discussing some of the existing, related works. This paper is aimed to develop a system that can measure stroke patients’ vital sign during their rehabilitation using microcontroller and sensor technology. As a result, the system will prevent the patients to suffer from further stroke or fatal. Also, the system will produce alarm as an alert to the assisting person of the patient

Developing mobile application for medicine expiry date detection

    Get PDF
Nowadays, people use mobile phones widely and wisely everywhere. Mobile application is suitable for current daily activity. Therefore, mobile application is the best solution to what medium user need to use to detect expiry date of medicine. The consumption of an expired medicine may cause severe harm to the patients. The paper label of expiry date being pasted on medicines can be torn or crumpled. Hence, this paper presents the development of mobile application to detect the expiry date of medicines. This application is designed using Quick Response (QR) code. The user can utilize the camera at smartphone to scan a QR code to detect the details of the medicine including expiry date. This system is conducted in two phases: (1) Comparative study of existing mobile applications (2) Development of proposed mobile application. This paper discusses existing mobile applications for the detection of medicine expiry date and their comparative study

Alarm device for self-tracking of progression during wrist rehabilitation

    Get PDF
This study aims to design a device for patients requiring wrist rehabilitation. Wrist injury due to accident, sports accidents, stroke, and prolonged hand immobilization often requires physical therapy for rehabilitation to reduce pain, improve range of motion (ROM), and regain strength and function. Physical therapists use a goniometer to measure ROM. Although the systematic treatment for wrist rehabilitation is physical therapy, current researchers are seeking an alternative and self-educative procedure based on engineering principles. This paper proposes a self-educative assessment and progress tracking design by exploiting an engineering design. This design is aided by a microcontroller, interfaced with sensors and display unit to measure wrist orientation of patients. The sensors measure the ROM of patients. This system uses a buzzer as an alarm tool for the patients during therapy exercises. If the patients have achieved targeted movements, a beeping sound would be produced to notify the patients. Thus, patients will be attentive in the treatment and motivated to proceed with the therapy. Visualization of the ROM through the display unit and alarm signal acts as an educating platform. Prototypes are fabricated and used for actual application with patients. Results showed that the proposed design is effective in self-educating the patients with wrist injuries (p<0.001)
