    Using NLP to build the hypertextuel network of a back-of-the-book index

    Relying on the idea that back-of-the-book indexes are traditional devices for navigation through large documents, we have developed a method to build a hypertextual network that helps the navigation in a document. Building such an hypertextual network requires selecting a list of descriptors, identifying the relevant text segments to associate with each descriptor and finally ranking the descriptors and reference segments by relevance order. We propose a specific document segmentation method and a relevance measure for information ranking. The algorithms are tested on 4 corpora (of different types and domains) without human intervention or any semantic knowledge

    Bayesian sequential estimation of the reliability of a parallel-series system

    We give a risk-averse solution to the problem of estimating the reliability of a parallel-series system. We adopt a beta-binomial model for components reliabilities, and assume that the total sample size for the experience is fixed. The allocation at subsystems or components level may be random. Based on the sampling schemes for parallel and series systems separately, we propose a hybrid sequential scheme for the parallel-series system. Asymptotic optimality of the Bayes risk associated with quadratic loss is proved with the help of martingale convergence properties.Comment: 12 page

    Lifetime of superheated water in a micrometric synthetic fluid inclusion

    International audienceA synthetic pure water fluid inclusion presenting a wide temperature range of metastability (Th - Tn ≈ 50°C; temperature of homogenization Th = 144°C and nucleation temperature of Tn = 89°C) was selected to make a kinetic study of the lifetime of an isolated microvolume of superheated water. The occluded liquid was placed in the metastable field by isochoric cooling and the duration of the metastable state was measured repetitively for 7 fixed temperatures above Tn. Statistically, measured metastability lifetimes for the 7 data sets follow the exponential Reliability distribution, i.e., the probability of non nucleation within time t equals . This enabled us to calculate the half-life periods of metastability Τ for each of the selected temperature, and then to predict Τ at any temperature T > Tn for the considered inclusion, according to the equation Τs , (∃T = T - Tn). Hence we conclude that liquid water in water-filled reservoirs with an average pore size ≈ 104 µm3 can remain superheated over geological timelengths (107s), when placed in the metastable field at 10°C above the average nucleation temperature, which often corresponds to high liquid tensions (≈ -120 -70 MPa)

    Optimization of the Ultimate Bearing Capacity of Reinforced Soft Soils through the Concept of the Critical Length of Stone Columns

    The objective of this paper is to develop an analytical equation based on the concept of the critical-length of columns in order to optimize the ultimate bearing-capacity of soft soils, supporting a strip footing and reinforced by a group of floating stone columns. Optimization procedure was performed on three-dimensional numerical models simulated on the Flac3D computer code, for various soft-soils with different undrained-cohesions (Cu=15–35kPa), reinforced by columns of varying lengths (L) and area replacement ratio (As=10-40%), considering different footing widths B. Obtained results indicate that the optimal bearing-capacity ratio (Ultimate bearing-capacity of reinforced soil/unreinforced soil) is reached for the column critical-length ratio (Lc/B) and increase with increase of the later ratio, depending  on As and Cu. Analysis of results also showed that the optimal values of the bearing-capacity ratio in the reinforced soils remain bounded between the lower and higher values (1.28-2.32), respectively for minimal and maximal values of the critical-length ratio (1.1) and (4.4). Based on these results, a useful analytical equation is proposed by the authors, for the expression of the critical-length; thus ensuring an optimal pre-dimensioning of the stone columns.
