    Phytochemical compounds and Pharmacological Activities of Garlic (Allium sativum L.): A Review

    Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is a species of monocotyledonous perennial vegetable plant whose bulbs, with a strong odor and taste, are often used as a condiment in cooking and a traditional remedy for various diseases. Garlic possesses more than 100 biologically useful secondary metabolites, including alliin, alliinase, allicin, S-allyl cysteine (SAC), diallyldisulfide (DADS), diallyltrisulfide (DATS) and methyl allyl trisulfide. The Îł-glutamyl-S-alk(en)yl-L-cysteines are the major sulfur compounds present in garlic. Fundamental studies have shown that garlic and its bioactive constituents have antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal, immunomodulatory, cardiovascular protective, anticancer, renal protective, digestive system protective, hepatoprotective and wound healing properties.This review examines the phytochemical composition, and pharmacological activities of A. sativum extracts as well as its main active constituent, allicin to cure many diseases, highlighting and discussing the relevant mechanisms of actions for many of their therapeutic effects

    Electrochemical and Thermodynamic Investigation on Corrosion Inhibition of C38 Steel in 1M Hydrochloric Acid Using the Hydro-Alcoholic Extract of Used Coffee Grounds

    The present work investigates the influence of temperature on C38 steel corrosion in a 1 M HCl medium with and without different concentrations of a hydro-alcoholic extract of used coffee grounds (HECG). The potentiodynamic polarization technique and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were performed in temperatures ranging from 293.15 to 323.15 K. It was observed that the inhibition efficiency decreased with increased temperature and inhibitor concentration. The HECG adsorption process on C38 steel surface was found to be spontaneous and obeyed to Langmuir isotherm at all studied temperatures. The associated thermodynamic parameters of adsorption led to suggest the occurrence of physical adsorption of the HECG compounds on the C38 steel surface

    Study of the corrosion inhibition of C38 steel in a 1M HCl medium by the etanoic extract of Rumex Nervosus Vahl leaves

    The efficacy of Rumex Nervosus Vahl Leaves Ethanolic extract (RNVLE) to inhibit C38 steel corrosion in one molar hydrochloric acid medium was examined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization. Polarization measurements revealed mixed-type inhibitor behavior. The inhibitory efficacy assessed by both polarization and (EIS) techniques was consistent, with an IE value of (96.0 %) and (95.5 %) at 2g/L of RNVLE, respectively. The RNVLE adsorption on the C38 metal surfaces in 1M HCl follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The calculated free energy (G°ads equal to -16.1 KJ mol-1) explained that RNVLE controls the corrosion process by physisorption. The effect of immersion time was also investigated. This study demonstrated that RNVLE can be considered an excellent inhibitor up to 6 hours and after this time; it is considered a lower quality inhibitor although it still has sufficient inhibitory ability. SEM-EDX (Scanning Electron Microscopy and X-ray Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) analysis revealed that the extract molecules adsorb on the metal's surface. These findings indicate that RNVLE can be used as an effective corrosion inhibitor for C38 steel in 1M HCl solution

    Gastric bronchogenic cyst presenting as a submucosal mass: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Bronchogenic cysts are developmental anomalies of the primitive foregut which mostly occur in the lung. Gastric bronchogenic cysts are extremely rare; few cases have been reported in the literature and the diagnosis was often made following surgical resection.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 40-year-old North African man was admitted to our hospital with a gastric submucosal mass. An endoscopic ultrasound revealed a unilocular cystic mass located in the muscular layer. Its content was echogenic suggestive of mucus. Magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the liquid nature of the cyst and showed a high ratio of proteins. Based on these observations, the diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst was confirmed. An endoscopic monitoring was decided rather than surgery because of the small size of the cyst and the absence of symptoms.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although gastric bronchogenic cysts are rare, they should be well known and considered in all differential diagnoses of gastric tumors. We report a new case of gastric bronchogenic cyst and highlight the contribution of morphological tests that currently allow a non-invasive diagnosis.</p

    Morocco’s First Biobank: Establishment, Ethical Issues, Biomedical Research Opportunities, and Challenges

    Background. Biobanks are highly organized infrastructures that allow the storage of human biological specimens associated with donors’ personal and clinical data. These infrastructures play a key role in the development of translational medical research. In this context, we launched, in November 2015, the first biobank in Morocco (BRO Biobank) in order to promote biomedical research and provide opportunities to include Moroccan and North African ethnic groups in international biomedical studies. Here, we present the setup and the sample characteristics of BRO Biobank. Methods. Patients were recruited at several departments of two major health-care centers in the city of Oujda. Healthy donors were enrolled during blood donation campaigns all over Eastern Morocco. From each participant, personal, clinical, and biomedical data were collected, and several biospecimens were stored. Standard operating procedures have been established in accordance with international guidelines on human biobanks. Results. Between November 2015 and July 2020, 2446 participants were recruited into the BRO Biobank, of whom 2013 were healthy donors, and 433 were patients. For healthy donors, the median age was 35 years with a range between 18 and 65 years and the consanguinity rate was 28.96%. For patients, the median age was 11 years with a range between 1 day and 83 years. Among these patients, 55% had rare diseases (hemoglobinopathies, intellectual disabilities, disorders of sex differentiation, myopathies, etc.), 13% had lung cancer, 4% suffered from hematological neoplasms, 3% were from the kidney transplantation project, and 25% had unknown diagnoses. The BRO Biobank has collected 5092 biospecimens, including blood, white blood cells, plasma, serum, urine, frozen tissue, FFPE tissue, and nucleic acids. A sample quality control has been implemented and suggested that samples of the BRO Biobank are of high quality and therefore suitable for high-throughput nucleic acid analysis. Conclusions. The BRO Biobank is the largest sample collection in Morocco, and it is ready to provide samples to national and international research projects. Therefore, the BRO Biobank is a valuable resource for advancing translational medical research
