Oxide Film Destruction on Al-Mg Alloys in HCl Solutions

    Get PDF
Open circuit potential technique is used to follow the oxide film destruction of three of Al-Mg alloys in HCl solutions of varying concentrations.  Dissolution of the passive film on pare metal surface takes place in two distinct steps indicating that the film is composed mainly of a barrier layer of Al2O3 adjacent to the metal surface and an outer porous modification on the top of the first one. The rates of oxide film destruction and/or dissolution (δ1¯ and δ2¯) follow a direct logarithmic law. The extent of oxide film destruction and metal dissolution were found to increase with increasing the acid concentration and the percent of Mg content in the alloy sample

Abstract WO 3 catalyst was prepared by thermal decomposition of ammonium metatungstate (AMT) in a static air atmosphere for 3h at 450, 550, 650 and 750 o C. The techniques employed for characterization of the catalyst were TG, DTA, XRD, FTIR, N 2 -sorption measurements. The surface acidity of the catalyst was investigated by adsorption of pyridine and 2, 6-dimethyl pyridine. The catalytic properties of the catalyst were carried out for the dehydration of isopropyl and methyl alcohols. The results revealed that WO 3 is more active toward isopropanol dehydration than methanol dehydration. Also reflect that the reaction mechanism and the yield of propene and dimethyl ether produced from dehydration of isopropyl and methyl alcohols are controlled by the strength of acid sites

The unexpected presence of a huge cystic hygroma with thanatophoric dysplasia type I: a case report

    Get PDF
Introduction: The presence of a thin-walled, multicystic structure posterior to the fetal head and neck with an intact vertebral column is known as a cystic hygroma. Thanatophoric dysplasia is the most lethal skeletal dysplasia. Thanatophoric dysplasia (TD) is an autosomal dominant disorder with two phenotypes. TD type I is characterized by a normal shaped skull with bowed femurs and micromelia, while TD type II is characterized by straight femurs with a clover-leaf deformity of the skull and micromelia. We report here a case of thanatophoric dysplasia type I associated with cystic hygroma, this association needs further evaluation. Case history: A 30 year old woman was referred at 26 weeks of gestation because of marked polyhydramnios. Ultrasonographic examination of the fetus revealed a narrow chest, protuberant abdomen, short curved femur, normal shaped skull with accidentally cystic hygroma were present. No other anomalies were detected. We explained to the patient the nature and severity of the anomaly and the patient preferred the termination of pregnancy. Induction of abortion was done successfully. Conclusion: This case report has highlighted the association between cystic hygroma and thanatophoric dysplasia type I. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature reporting the association of cystic hygroma and thanatophoric dysplasia type I. We believe that this case is useful for obstetricians and pediatricians. We also highly recommend the genetic evaluation of the fetus and parents

AbstractBackground and aimSoluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L, also known as CD154) is a marker for platelet activation which could increase coagulation and inflammation. In this case-control study, we aimed to assess the levels of plasma sCD40L, IL-6, and some hemostatic parameters in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) whether or not associated with overt ischemic heart disease (IHD).Subjects and methodsWe measured plasma sCD40L (an index of platelet activation), interleukin (IL)-6 (a proinflammatory cytokine), and some hemostatic parameters (tissue factor [TF], thrombin–antithrombin [TAT] and D-dimer) in 47 patients with metabolic syndrome (21 with and 26 without overt IHD) versus 25 comparable healthy control subjects.ResultsSignificantly higher levels of sCD40L, IL-6, and thrombotic markers (TF, D-dimer and TAT) were found in patients with metabolic syndrome compared to healthy controls. The levels of IL-6 and sCD40 were highest in patients with overt IHD. Strong positive correlations existed between sCD40L and IL-6 (r=0.67, p=0.003), TF (r=0.59, p=0.008), and platelets count (r=0.64, p=0.005).ConclusionHigher levels of sCD40L, IL-6, and thrombotic markers exist in MetS patients, particularly those with IHD. The strong positive correlations between sCD40L and IL-6, TF, and platelets count support a link between the CD40–CD40L system and the underlying inflammatory and hypercoagulable state in MetS patients

Objectives: The objective of this work is to synthesize novel imidazole and fused imidazole derivatives using 5-arylidene-2-hydrazino-3-phenyl imidazolin-4-ones (5a-c) as key intermediate. The structure of the newly synthesized compounds was characterized using IR, 1HNMR, Mass spectroscopy, elemental analysis and some representative 13CNMR.Methods: The target compounds were synthesized starting from 5-arylidene-2-hydrazino-3-phenyl imidazolin-4-ones (5a-c) which prepared from the appropriate 5-arylidene-2-(methylthio)-3-phenyl imidazolin-4-ones (3a-c). Several synthetic pathways were be used for the preparation of the targets. Some of the newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activity against breast carcinoma and colon carcinoma cell lines. On the other hand, the antimicrobial activity evaluation of some newly prepared compounds was performed using cup plate diffusion method. Results: Compound 5c was the most active one against breast carcinoma (IC50=3.3 ug/ml) and colon carcinoma cell lines (IC50=4.73 ug/ml) when compared with doxorubicin as standard. Molecular docking studies further supported the highest potency of 5c and further help understanding the various interactions between the ligand and enzyme active sites. On the other hand, the antimicrobial activity evaluation showed that most of the evaluated compounds exhibited broad spectrum activity. Conclusion: The present work led to the development of promising antitumor compounds containing substituted imidazolidin-5-one or imidazotriazol-6-one skeletons. Compounds 5c showed the highest potency at low µg/ml level against breast MCF-7 and colon HCT116 cell lines. On the other hand, most of the newly synthesized compounds showed broad spectrum antimicrobial activity when cup plate diffusion method was performed.Â

Background: The aim of this study is to know the prevalence of blighted ovum among pregnant women in 1st trimester attending our hospital during their antenatal visits and to know the fate of blighted ovum either if there is spontaneous expulsion of the sac or need of medical induction or surgical evacuation. Methods: This observational study was conducted at Obstetrics and Genecology Department, Women Health Hospital and Sahel Selim Hospital, Egypt from November 2015 to February 2018. All patients recruited in this study attended the antenatal care clinics for antenatal follow-up during their first-trimester of pregnancies. Results: All cases of the study were less than 14 weeks. The mean gestational age was 8.93±1.01 (7.0-11.0) weeks. In patients less than 20 years old, (73%) there is a significant increase in surgical treatment (dilatation & curettage) after failure of medical treatment, patients more than 40 years old (50.7%) there is a significant increase in medical treatment after success taking misoprostol so there is no need to a surgical treatment by (dilatation & curettage) in the majority of cases. Conclusions: The prevalence of blighted ovum was 15.6%. Also, the prevalence of blighted ovum was statistically significant increased with increase maternal age and also, we noticed that there was a statistically significant association between early pregnancy failure and a history of previous early pregnancy loss

A synthesis of benzo[e][1,2,4]triazines and 1,2,4-triazolospiro[4,5]deca-2,6,9-trien-8-ones has been developed from reactions of amidrazones with 2-chloro-1,4-benzoquinone in EtOAc containing 0.5 mL of piperidine. This highly regioselective and one-pot process provided rapid access to 1,2,4-triazolospiro[4,5]deca-2,6,9-trien-8-ones (60%–70%) and benzo[e][1,2,4]triazines (11%–18%). On reacting amidrazones with 5-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone in an EtOAc/piperidine mixture, the reaction proceeded to give 5-hydroxy-2-(piperidin-1-yl)naphthalene-1,4-dione. The structures of the isolated products were proved by infrared, NMR (2D-NMR), mass spectra, and elemental analyses in addition to X-ray structure analysis. The reaction mechanisms are discussed. The anticancer screening of selected compounds showed broad-spectrum anticancer activity against most melanoma cancer cell lines, ovarian cancer OVCAR-3, central nervous system cancer SF-295 and U251, non-small cell lung cancer NCI-H23, renal cancer SN12C, and colon cancer HCT-15 and HCT-116. The selected compounds exhibited moderate to weak anticancer activity to other cell lines

Background: Female genital mutilation (FGM) was defined as the partial or total removal of the female external genitalia for non-medical reasons The Demographic and Health Survey in Egypt in 2000 showed that 97% of married women included in the survey had experienced female genital mutilation. Methods: This is a cross sectional study to evaluate the current prevalence of FGM, current attitude of our society towards it after illegalization of it as a cross sectional survey of Upper Egypt. The most important point in this study is our evaluation of intention of these women whom exposed to FGM toward mutilation of their daughters or not and reasons for that. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS software version 21.Results: The study included 1175 women, from whom 89.1% were circumcised. Type 1 FGM was the most prevalent type practiced in about 58% of participants. Immediate complications occurred in 42.5% of women. Primary hemorrhage during circumcision was the most commonly reported immediate complication among 38.5% of them. Sexual problems were found in 40.5% of participants. Sixty-four women reported occurrence of hepatitis virus infection after the procedure. Moreover, 44 women were suffered from infertility and 72 women had an episode or chronic PID. Women who intend to circumcise their daughters are mostly those coming from rural areas (p=0.000) and housewives (p=0.000). Most of women (45.8%) who have the intent to circumcise their daughters claiming that it is religious based. Conclusions: The prevalence of FGM did not differ between urban and rural or between house wives and employee, lastly did not differ between different educational levels as most of them were encourage it thinking that it is of traditional, religious base and protect the girl from any abnormal sexual excitation. The women who intent not circumcise their daughters were from low educational level in its highest percentage and this was explained by occurrence of higher percentage of complications in spite of the highest percentage of operator was physician
