Review of Archival Futures

Archival Futures is the most recent addition to the body of literature on archival futurism. Consisting of nine essays written by mostly academic lecturers or professors from the UK, Australia, Canada and the United States, this volume considers the impact of technology on the future of archives. Major technical concerns for the future include big data, blockchain, artificial intelligence, format challenges, and storage issues. Ultimately, the volume falls short of contextualizing archives within troubling future global trends, particularly those of labor casualization and climate change

Desenvolvimento de ferramenta vocacionada para o dimensionamento de estruturas metálicas de acordo com a NP EN 1993-1-1

Trabalho desenvolvido em parceria com a empresa Casais.A presente comunicação descreve o desenvolvimento de uma ferramenta informática vocacionada para o dimensionamento de estruturas metálicas de acordo com a NP EN 1993 1 1 [1]. A ferramenta AciariUM é direcionada para a verificação e dimensionamento (ELU) de vigas-coluna em aço sujeitas a flexão composta desviada. Foi desenvolvida como meio de análise de elementos em aço e de verificação expedita dos resultados recolhidos a partir de programas comerciais de análise estrutural. Permite ao utilizador um controlo total sobre os resultados, na medida em que todo o algoritmo e procedimento de cálculo relativo a cada parâmetro está disponível para consulta e edição.É dirigido um especial agradecimento: à CASAIS – Engenharia e Construção, S.A. e à Universidade do Minho por acolherem este projeto; aos suportes dos programas CYPE 3D e Robot Structural Analysis pela disponibilidade com que interagiram com os autores deste projeto sempre que a sua intervenção foi solicitada

Impact of pedagogical intervention on early childhood professionals’ emotional availability to children with different temperament characteristics

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of pedagogical intervention on early childhood education professionals’ emotional availability to children with different temperament characteristics. Participants were 136 children (intervention group = 87; control group = 49) aged 1–6 years from 16 early childhood and care centres in Finland. The PedaSens intervention was a 9-month programme that included theory and video-based training for the professionals. Adult–child interaction was assessed with the Emotional Availability Scales before and after the intervention, and children’s temperament was assessed with the Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire. According to results, early childhood professionals’ emotional availability increased in the intervention group, especially to children with high levels of activity and pleasure seeking and with low levels of attentional focusing. We argue that the quality of interaction in early childhood education and care can be increased by targeting professional trainings to support children with different temperament characteristics.Peer reviewe

Longevidade de sementes de cultivares de "Catuaí" (Coffea arabica) em banco de germoplasma.

A conservação de sementes de café por longos períodos é dificultada pelo comportamento intermediário no armazenamento. No entanto, estudos recentes relatam que a partir da combinação de um grau crítico de umidade das sementes para cada temperatura de armazenamento, pode-se prolongar o período de conservação. Neste estudo, sementes de Coffea arabica cultivares Catuaí Amarelo IAC 62, Catuaí Amarelo IAC 47, Catuaí Vermelho IAC 144 e Catuaí Vermelho IAC 15 foram armazenadas sob temperatura ambiente (+25°C), em câmaras a +5°C e ?20°C e em nitrogênio líquido (-196°C) por 30 meses. Houve perda expressiva de viabilidade a partir do 8° mês de armazenamento sob temperatura ambiente (+25°C), em todas cultivares. As sementes criopreservadas em nitrogênio líquido apresentaram menor perda de viabilidade durante o período de armazenamento. Os resultados são promissores para a definição do protocolo de conservação das sementes em Bancos de Germoplasma.Genética e melhoramento do cafeeiro

The effects of PedaSens intervention on early childhood professionals’ emotional availability

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a pedagogical group sensitivity (PedaSens) intervention on early childhood professionals’ (ECPs) emotional availability (EA) in group interactions. A total of 61 ECPs and 264 children 1–6 years of age were included in the follow-up study. To measure the effects of the intervention, participants were randomized to intervention and control groups. The intervention consists of raising ECPs’ knowledge of PedaSens both with theoretical information and video observations collected from the study groups. The quality of interaction was assessed with the Emotional Availability Scales before the intervention and the following assessments were approximately 6 and 9 months after the first assessment. Statistical analyses were used to test the differences in EA between the study groups. According to the results, intervention had a positive effect on ECPs’ EA sensitivity and non-intrusiveness. The results suggest that PedaSens intervention is effective in supporting the emotional availability of ECPs. In-service training for ECP teams aiming to enhance interaction skills and reflective processes offer an effective way to improve the quality of early childhood education and care.Peer reviewe

Banco de sementes de café em criopreservação: experiência inédita no Brasil.

A conservação de sementes de café por longos períodos é dificultada pelo comportamento intermediário no armazenamento. No entanto, estudos recentes relatam que a partir da combinação de um grau crítico de umidade das sementes para cada temperatura de armazenamento, pode-se prolongar o período de conservação. Com o objetivo de estabelecer um Banco de Germoplasma de Coffea spp, através de técnicas de criopreservação, estudos vêm sendo desenvolvidos na Embrapa Recursos Genéticos e Biotecnologia, em Brasília, DF. O protocolo de conservação consta da desidratação parcial das sementes, até cerca de 20% de água, embalagem em sacos trifoliados de papel-alumínio-polietileno, selados hermeticamente e imersão direta no nitrogênio líquido. Após a criopreservação as sementes são descongeladas rapidamente em banho de água a 40°C, sob agitação constante. Os resultados obtidos até o momento, com cerca de 30 acessos de diferentes cultivares de Coffea arabica são bastante promissores, indicando a sobrevivência das sementes mesmo após períodos de dois anos de congelamento no nitrogênio líquido. A partir desses resultados será implantada uma core collection, ou uma pequena coleção com os principais acessos da espécie, constituindo-se o Banco de Germoplasma de café em criopreservação, experiência inédita no Brasil

Transthyretin Promotes Axon Growth via Regulation of Microtubule Dynamics and Tubulin Acetylation

Transthyretin (TTR), a plasma and cerebrospinal fluid protein, increases axon growth and organelle transport in sensory neurons. While neurons extend their axons, the microtubule (MT) cytoskeleton is crucial for the segregation of functional compartments and axonal outgrowth. Herein, we investigated whether TTR promotes axon elongation by modulating MT dynamics. We found that TTR KO mice have an intrinsic increase in dynamic MTs and reduced levels of acetylated a-tubulin in peripheral axons. In addition, they failed to modulate MT dynamics in response to sciatic nerve injury, leading to decreased regenerative capacity. Importantly, restoring acetylated a-tubulin levels of TTR KO dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons using an HDAC6 inhibitor is sufficient to completely revert defective MT dynamics and neurite outgrowth.
