    Current perpendicular to plane Giant Magnetoresistance (GMR) in laminated nanostructures

    We theoretically studied spin dependent electron transport perpendicular-to-plain (CPP) in magnetic laminated multilayered structures by using Kubo formalism. We took into account not only bulk scattering, but the interface resistance due to both specular and diffuse reflection and also spin conserving and spin-flip processes. It was shown that spin-flip scattering at interfaces substantially reduces the value of GMR. This can explain the experimental observations that the CPP GMR ratio for laminated structures only slightly increases as compared to non-laminated ones despite lamination induces a significant increase in CPP resistance.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Nanoengineered Curie Temperature in Laterally-Patterned Ferromagnetic Semiconductor Heterostructures

    We demonstrate the manipulation of the Curie temperature of buried layers of the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As using nanolithography to enhance the effect of annealing. Patterning the GaAs-capped ferromagnetic layers into nanowires exposes free surfaces at the sidewalls of the patterned (Ga,Mn)As layers and thus allows the removal of Mn interstitials using annealing. This leads to an enhanced Curie temperature and reduced resistivity compared to unpatterned samples.     Signatures of the order parameter of a superconducting adatom layer in quasiparticle interference patterns

    Experiments have observed superconductivity in atomically-thin metallic layers deposited on semiconducting substrates. As in any superconductor, it is important to determine the structure of the superconducting pairing function in order to reveal the mechanism responsible for superconductivity. To that end, we study the possible superconducting states of two-dimensional triangular lattices. We calculate the quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns which would result from various nearest-neighbor pairing order parameters, and show how the QPI can be used to distinguish between those order parameters. The QPI patterns are the momentum-space representations of real-space local density-of-states fluctuations: the QPI signal at momentum qq reveals the strength of scattering processes at that momentum transfer. We show how characteristic differences between scattering from charge disorder (i.e. impurities) and from order-parameter disorder (i.e. vortices) can be used to identify the angular momentum of the superconducting pairs.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

    Current Challenges in Prostate Cancer Management and the Rationale behind Targeted Focal Therapy

    Among men, prostate cancer has a high prevalence, with relatively lower cancer-specific mortality risk compared to lung and colon cancer. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening has increased prostate cancer awareness since its implementation as a screening tool almost 25 years ago, but, due to the largely indolent course of this disease and the unspecific nature of the PSA test, increased incidence has largely been associated with cancers that would not go on to cause death (clinically insignificant), leading to an overdiagnosis challenge and an ensuing overtreatment consequences. The overtreatment problem is exacerbated by the high risk of side effects that current treatment techniques have, putting patients' quality of life at risk with little or no survival benefit. The goals of this paper are to evaluate the rise, prevalence, and impact of the overdiagnosis and ensuing overtreatment problems, as well as highlight potential solutions. In this effort, a review of major epidemiological and screening studies, cancer statistics from the advent of prostate-specific antigen screening to the present, and reports on patient concerns and treatment outcomes was conducted to present the dominant factors that underlie current challenges in prostate cancer treatment and illuminate potential solutions

    Effect of aggregates with high gypsum content on the performance of concrete

    Sulfates in fine aggregate are a major problem when it exists in excessive amount especially in the Middle East and Iraq. Most of sulfate salts in fine aggregate are composed of calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium sulfates. Calcium sulfates is the most common salt present in fine aggregate. It is usually finding as gypsum. It is difficult to obtain the specific sulfates content in fine aggregate within standard specifications. This research was conducted to investigate the effect of adding different contents of gypsum to fine aggregate as a replacement by weight on some properties of two types of concrete {self-compacted concrete (SCC) and high strength concrete (HSC)}. In these work three bases mixes of each type of concrete are used: mixes with different contents of metakaolin, mixes with different contents of gypsum and mixes incorporating different contents of metakaolin and gypsum. This study is devoted to determine the allowable content of sulfates in fine aggregate. Three levels of gypsum were tested (0.5, 1, 1.5) % by weight of fine aggregate and three levels of metakaolin were tested (5, 10, 15) % by the weight of cement. The experimental program is devoted to produce concrete with different levels of metakaolin and gypsum and determine its mechanical properties such as compressive strength and splitting tensile strength. The results arrived from this work show that the optimum gypsum content was 1.5% by weight of fine aggregates for mixes of SCC which gives increases in compressive strength and tensile strength, and 1% gypsum for mixes of HSC, results showed also that the metakaolin improved the properties of the two types of concrete and increased the loss which caused by sulfates. The best mix ever in SCC is 1% gypsum with 5% metakaolin, and 1% gypsum with 10% metakaolin for HSC

    Lower limb and associated injuries in frontal-impact road traffic collisions

    Objectives: To study the relationship between severity of injury of the lower limb and severity of injury of the head, thoracic, and abdominal regions in frontal-impact road traffic collisions.Methods: Consecutive hospitalised trauma patients who were involved in a frontal road traffic collision were prospectively studied over 18 months. Patients with at least one Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) ≥3 or AIS 2 injuries within two AIS body regions were included. Patients were divided into two groups depending on the severity of injury to the head, chest or abdomen. Low severity group had an AIS < 2 and high severity group had an AIS ≥ 2. Backward likelihood logistic regression models were used to define significant factors affecting the severity of head, chest or abdominal injuries.Results: Eighty-five patients were studied. The backward likelihood logistic regression model defining independent factors affecting severity of head injuries was highly significant (p =0.01, nagelkerke r square = 0.1) severity of lower limb injuries was the only significant factor (p=0.013) having a negative correlation with head injury (Odds ratio of 0.64 (95% CI: 0.45-0.91).Conclusion: Occupants who sustain a greater severity of injury to the lower limb in a frontal-impact collision are likely to be spared from a greater severity of head injury.Keywords: Frontal-impact, road traffic collision, lower limb injur
