Is Acupuncture Effective in Reducing the Pain Intensity Due to Primary Dysmenorrhea?

OBJECTIVE: the objective of this selective EBM review is to determine whether or not acupuncture is effective in reducing the pain intensity due to primary dysmenorrhea in women ages 15 to 35. STUDY DESIGN: Review of three randomized control trials (RCTs) written in English, one of which was published in 2011 and two in 2013. DATA SOURCES: Three non-blind randomized control trials published in peer reviewed journals found via PubMed. OUTCOME MEASURED: Pain intensity due to primary dysmenorrhea was measured using visual analog scale (VAS), Cox Menstrual Symptom Scale (CMSS), and Cox Retrospective Symptom Scale (RSS COX2 – average severity ratings). RESULTS: Liu et al. and Ma et al. reported a decrease in pain scores after acupuncture was given. The Kiran et al. study showed a significant improvement in pain intensity with acupuncture, but the results were slightly less significant than that of the group that received NSAIDs, as shown in the p-values. CONCLUSION: All three studies showed that there was a decrease in the severity and intensity of pain caused by primary dysmenorrhea with the use of acupuncture therapy. However, further studies with larger sample sizes that examined a more specific method and location of acupuncture will be needed to strengthen the conclusion that acupuncture is effective in treating dysmenorrhea in women of young, reproductive ages

Gee, Officer Krupke: An Actor\u27s Casebook

In 2016, I was cast as Officer Krupke in a production of West Side Story at Orlando Shakespeare Theater in Partnership with UCF. Even though Krupke can be thought of as a minor character in the play, bringing him to life required a great deal of research and imagination. In order to ground myself in the reality of the role, I researched the effects of implicit bias in modern policing, applied that research to Uta Hagen\u27s Nine Questions, and brought that knowledge into the rehearsal hall and onto the stage. I examined how my character\u27s interactions with Lieutenant Schrank influenced his actions and attitudes toward both street gangs in the play and reflected on how my research and these performances changed my point of view and helped me recognize my own biases. This thesis reflects that process and will serve as a tool available to any actor seeking to create his or her own interpretation of Officer Krupke

A fluid inclusion study of acidity in bedded halite of the Larne Halite Member, Triassic Mercia Mudstone Group from the Carnduff 2 Core, County Antrim, Northern Ireland

The Carnduff 2 core, drilled in 2014 by the Gaelectric Storage Limited Energy Company in County Antrim, Northern Ireland contains Triassic red mudstones and evaporites of the Mercia Mudstone Group. These rocks have been poorly studied in Northern Ireland. However, recent work suggests that they were deposited in an ancient perennial saline lake system. This thesis describes a 591.6 meter core with 92.7% recovery. Fluid inclusion petrography, microthermometry, and laser Raman spectroscopy were conducted on 12 halite beds of the Larne Halite Member to characterize Triassic lake waters.;Chevron and cumulate halite crystals contain abundant unaltered primary fluid inclusions. Most primary fluid inclusions are all liquid, but there are also fluid inclusions that contain daughter crystals. Petrographic studies showed that primary inclusions have a double rim. This double rim is not seen on fluid inclusions with neutral pH. This suggests that double rims may be a new criterion for determining acidity. Fluid inclusions failed to freeze during freezing-melting microthermometry, even after being exposed to -190º C for several minutes. The failure to freeze during microthermometry runs is likely due to low pH and/or extremely high salinity. Laser Raman spectroscopy of 45 inclusions showed peaks for bisulfate and/or aluminum sulfate compounds in 10 of the 12 beds, indicating high sulfate and aluminum in solution. More importantly, such peaks are characteristic of waters having pH values \u3c ~3.;This study provides evidence for the first time that bedded halite of the Mercia Mudstone Group of Northern Ireland formed in acid, saline lakes. Additionally, new criteria for determining low pH in the rock record has been established. Finally, this study suggests that, when compared to Permian acid brine deposits of North America, the red beds and evaporites of the Triassic Mercia Mudstone Group of Northern Ireland may be part of spatially extensive and long-lasting, acid saline environments of Pangea

Putting On Her Man Pants: Social Reaction to Female Cross-Dressing and Gender Transgression in America 1850-1880

Between 1850 and 1880, Americans obsessed over cross-dressing women. Many women donned the breeches: ruined young daughters of respectable families, honest but poor girls looking for a living, and unseemly women who wished either to explore public places or prostitute themselves. This huge variation in station and intention of cross-dressing women allows an exploration of Victorian identity markers -- not just gender, but also race, class, and respectability. Many of these young ladies were described as Romantic adventurers -- they had heroic and beautiful, but often ultimately tragic, experiences. By studying the social reaction to these individuals, we discover that cross-dressing, paradoxically, was not always socially threatening. Instead the level of acceptance was related to the degree of conformity to both gender and other forms of social status markers

Alcohol consumption in heroin users, methadone-substituted and codeine-substituted patients - Frequency and correlates of use

This retrospective study aims to determine whether there is a difference in the additional consumption of alcohol between addicts treated with methadone or dihydrocodeine (DHC) and untreated addicts injecting heroin. 1,685 patients admitted for opioid withdrawal between 1991 and 1997 were reviewed. Cross-reference tables and multiple logistic regression analyses were carried out. 28% of patients take more than 40 g of alcohol daily (on average 176 g). We found that patients who are treated with methadone or DHC drink alcohol significantly more often daily than the heroin-dependent patients (p<0.01). Using multiple regression analyses, the results were confirmed. Additionally, we found that co-abuse of alcohol was predicted by male gender, longer duration of drug use, additional daily consumption of tetrahydrocannabinol and daily consumption of benzodiazepines. Alcohol consumption by opioid-addicted patients treated with methadone or DHC presents a serious medical problem. Co-abuse of alcohol will receive more attention Copyright (C) 2003 S.
