Modeling Spatio-Temporal Divergence in Land Vulnerability to Desertification with Local Regressions
Taken as a classical issue in applied economics, the notion of ‘convergence’ is based on the concept of path dependence, i.e., from the previous trajectory undertaken by the system during its recent history. Going beyond social science, a ‘convergence’ perspective has been more recently adopted in environmental studies. Spatial convergence in non-linear processes, such as desertification risk, is a meaningful notion since desertification represents a (possibly unsustainable) development trajectory of socio-ecological systems towards land degradation on a regional or local scale. In this study, we test—in line with the classical convergence approach—long-term equilibrium conditions in the evolution of desertification processes in Italy, a European country with significant socioeconomic and environmental disparities. Assuming a path-dependent development of desertification risk in Italy, we provided a diachronic analysis of the Environmental Sensitive Area Index (ESAI), estimated at a disaggregated spatial resolution at three times (1960s, 1990s, and 2010s) in the recent history of Italy, using a spatially explicit approach based on geographically weighted regressions (GWRs). The results of local regressions show a significant path dependence in the first time interval (1960–1990). A less significant evidence for path-dependence was observed for the second period (1990–2010); in both cases, the models’ goodness-of-fit (global adjusted R2) was satisfactory. A strong polarization along the latitudinal gradient characterized the first observation period: Southern Italian land experienced worse conditions (e.g., climate aridity, urbanization) and the level of land vulnerability in Northern Italy remained quite stable, alimenting the traditional divergence in desertification risk characteristic of the country. The empirical analysis delineated a more complex picture for the second period. Convergence (leading to stability, or even improvement, of desertification risk) in some areas of Southern Italy, and a more evident divergence (leading to worse environmental conditions because of urban sprawl and crop intensification) in some of the land of Northern Italy, were observed, leading to an undesired spatial homogenization toward higher vulnerability levels. Finally, this work suggests the importance of spatially explicit approaches providing relevant information to design more effective policy strategies. In the case of land vulnerability to degradation in Italy, local regression models oriented toward a ‘convergence’ perspective, may be adopted to uncover the genesis of desertification hotspots at both the regional and local scale

RPO, Second-order Contexts, and Lambda-calculus
First, we extend Leifer-Milner RPO theory, by giving general conditions to
obtain IPO labelled transition systems (and bisimilarities) with a reduced set
of transitions, and possibly finitely branching. Moreover, we study the weak
variant of Leifer-Milner theory, by giving general conditions under which the
weak bisimilarity is a congruence. Then, we apply such extended RPO technique
to the lambda-calculus, endowed with lazy and call by value reduction
strategies.
We show that, contrary to process calculi, one can deal directly with the
lambda-calculus syntax and apply Leifer-Milner technique to a category of
contexts, provided that we work in the framework of weak bisimilarities.
However, even in the case of the transition system with minimal contexts, the
resulting bisimilarity is infinitely branching, due to the fact that, in
standard context categories, parametric rules such as the beta-rule can be
represented only by infinitely many ground rules.
To overcome this problem, we introduce the general notion of second-order
context category. We show that, by carrying out the RPO construction in this
setting, the lazy observational equivalence can be captured as a weak
bisimilarity equivalence on a finitely branching transition system. This result

Biodiversity, evolution and adaptation of fungi in extreme environments
Fungi play irreplaceable roles for ecosystem functioning. They may adopt different lifestyles, for example saprotrophs, symbionts or parasites: some species are cosmopolitan with a wide distribution and others, thanks to their ecological plasticity, may adapt to harsh environments precluded to most of life forms. In stressing conditions, their role is even more crucial for the recycling of organic matter or favoring nutrients uptake. When the conditions become really extreme and competition is low, fungi focus on extremotolerance and evolve peculiar competences to exploit natural or xenobiotic resources in the particular constrains imposed by the environment. This paper focuses on three different cases of fungal life in the extremes: hydrocarbon-polluted sites, extremely acidic substrates, and littoral dunes, aiming to give few but significant examples of the role of these fascinating organisms in peculiar habitats and the valuable biotechnological potentialities of the abilities they have evolved in response to such constrains
Stellar jitter from variable gravitational redshift: implications for RV confirmation of habitable exoplanets
A variation of gravitational redshift, arising from stellar radius
fluctuations, will introduce astrophysical noise into radial velocity
measurements by shifting the centroid of the observed spectral lines. Shifting
the centroid does not necessarily introduce line asymmetries. This is
fundamentally different from other types of stellar jitter so far identified,
which do result from line asymmetries. Furthermore, only a very small change in
stellar radius, ~0.01%, is necessary to generate a gravitational redshift
variation large enough to mask or mimic an Earth-twin. We explore possible
mechanisms for stellar radius fluctuations in low-mass stars. Convective
inhibition due to varying magnetic field strengths and the Wilson depression of
starspots are both found to induce substantial gravitational redshift
variations. Finally, we investigate a possible method for monitoring/correcting
this newly identified potential source of jitter and comment on its impact for

Independent verification of plutonium decontamination on Johnston Atoll (1992--1996)
The Field Command, Defense Special Weapons Agency (FCDSWA) (formerly FCDNA) contracted Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Environmental Technology Section (ETS) to conduct an independent verification (IV) of the Johnston Atoll (JA) Plutonium Decontamination Project by an interagency agreement with the US Department of Energy in 1992. The main island is contaminated with the transuranic elements plutonium and americium, and soil decontamination activities have been ongoing since 1984. FCDSWA has selected a remedy that employs a system of sorting contaminated particles from the coral/soil matrix, allowing uncontaminated soil to be reused. The objective of IV is to evaluate the effectiveness of remedial action. The IV contractor`s task is to determine whether the remedial action contractor has effectively reduced contamination to levels within established criteria and whether the supporting documentation describing the remedial action is adequate. ORNL conducted four interrelated tasks from 1992 through 1996 to accomplish the IV mission.
