Contemporary Greedy Institutions: An Essay on Lewis Coserâs Concept in Times of the âHive Mindâ
Lewis Coser perennially discussed various forms and facets of âgreedy institutionsâ with their total grasp on the individual. Coserâs âgreedy institutionsâ demand undivided time and loyalty from the individual who will voluntarily devote him/herself for exclusive benefits only granted to loyal followers. Although the ancient authorities have vanished-princes with their court Jews, masters with their servants, or religious and political missionaries- one can argue that the idea of the greedy institution is far from obsolete today. Management consultants, 24/7 old-age carers from Eastern Europe and particularly the âhive mindâ of new social media show that a revisiting of Coserâs theory can help in understanding modern forms of greed in institutions. This awareness may enhance vigilance against intrusions into personal autonomy.96998
The IMB Working Paper No. 100: Taking stock and moving forward
This is the 100th issue of the IMB Working Papers. It contains three short papers on the series itself. The first paper takes stock of the history, content and relevance of the IMB Working Paper Series. It analyses the first 100 issues of the series in detail (DörrenbĂ€cher in this volume, pp. 4-15). The second paper is addressing the changes at the institution publishing the IMB Working Paper Series. Having been merged with an Institute for Long-Distance Studies, the IMB (Institute of Management Berlin) was re-named to BPS (Berlin Professional School), bringing professionalism to center stage (Tomenendal and Egger de Campo in this volume, pp.16-19). The third paper looks ahead and describes the future ambitions of the working paper series, which will appear as BPS Working Paper Series in the future. Aspects covered are the rationale, scope and way of delivery of the series (DörrenbĂ€cher and Tomenendal in this issue, pp. 20-23).Dies ist die 100.
Towards a Closing of the Gender Pay Gap: Country Report Austria.
Austria shows one of the highest gender wage differentials among the European countries; in 1999, Austrian women's average earnings reached only 65 % of that of their male compatriots. This wage gap decreased during the 1980s but again increased in the 1990s, although female employment rates had been rising ever since. In the 2010s, Austria still is among those countries with the highest gender pay gap of the enlarged EU28. This already points to the very main characteristic of the Austrian gender wage gap: Most of the increase of female labour market participation has been realized in part-time jobs, which not only decreases gross earnings but also chances to get promoted, and thus access to better paid jobs.Norwegian Centre for Gender Equalit
Sonification as a tool to reconstruct user's actions in unobservabe areas
Presented at the 11th International Conference on Auditory Display (ICAD2005)This paper deals with the sonification of log data gathered during a field test of an innovative toilet system. These tests have been carried out in a day care center for multiple sclerosis patients in winter 2004/05 in the framework of the EU funded Friendly Rest Room project (FRR). For ethical reasons, no direct observational data are at hand to validate the design concept. We will show a way to solve this dilemma by sonification of the log data. This sonification must be designed in a way that enables the researcher to reconstruct the user's actions s/he could not directly observe
