VMStools: Open-source software for the processing, analysis and visualization of fisheries logbook and VMS data
VMStools is a package of open-source software, build using the freeware environment R, specifically developed for the processing, analysis and visualisation of landings (logbooks) and vessel location data (VMS) from commercial fisheries. Analyses start with standardized data formats for logbook (EFLALO) and VMS (TACSAT), enabling users to conduct a variety of analyses using generic algorithms. Embedded functionality handles erroneous data point detection and removal, métier identification through the use of clustering techniques, linking logbook and VMS data together in order to distinguish fishing from other activities, provide high-resolution maps of both fishing effort and -landings, interpolate vessel tracks, calculate indicators of fishing impact as listed under the Data Collection Framework at different spatio-temporal scales. Finally data can be transformed into other existing formats, for example to populate regional databases like FishFrame. This paper describes workflow examples of these features while online material allows a head start to perform these analyses. This software incorporates state-of-the art VMS and logbook analysing methods standardizing the process towards obtaining pan-European, or even worldwide indicators of fishing distribution and impact as required for spatial planning. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Report on the Workshop on Transversal Variables. (Linking economic and biological effort data (call) design). 19th -23rd January 2015
The Workshop on the Transversal Variables took place in Zagreb from the 19th to 23rd of January, 2015 mainly to tackle the issues related to the increasing need of having fisheries fleet economic data and fisheries biologic data on a level of disaggregation that would allow a proper interoperability between datasets to underpin bioeconomic modelling. For that, several analyses were carried out and conclusions taken. These analyses were : 1. comparison of economic and biological effort data calls both with respect to their level of resolution and the landings and effort values obtained from equivalent aggregations was performed. This was compared to what would be needed in order to undertake bioeconomic modelling for a chosen management plan. 2. The description of how MS are calculating effort variables and a proposal on the way forward to harmonize approaches, 3. Conclusions on how to harmonize levels of resolution, the variable definitions and the codification in use amongst data calls, in order to make them comparable and based on coherent standard codifications.JRC.G.3-Maritime affair

Report of the Working Group on Commercial Catches (WGCATCH)
The Working Group on Commercial Catches (WGCATCH), chaired by Mike Arm-
strong (UK) and Hans Gerritsen (Ireland), met in ICES HQ, Copenhagen, Denmark,
10–14 November 2014. The meeting was attended by 34 experts from 21 laboratories
or organizations, covering 16 countries.
Currently, an important task for WGCATCH is to improve and review sampling sur-
vey designs for commercial fisheries, particularly those for estimating quantities and
size or age compositions of landings and discards and providing data quality indica-
tors. However, the scope of WGCATCH is broader than this, covering many other
aspects of collection and analysis of data on fishing activities and catches. This will be
end-user driven, and coordinated with the work of other ICES data EGs such as the
Working Group on Biological Parameters (WGBIOP), the Planning Group on Data
Needs for Assessments and Advice (PGDATA) and the Working Group on Recrea-
tional Fisheries Surveys (WGRFS) to ensure synergy and efficiency.
The report of the meeting commences with background information on the formation
of WGCATCH and its overall role. The remainder of the report provides the out-
comes for each of the Terms of Reference (ToRs) and responses to external requests,
the proposed future work plan and the ToRs for the 2015 meeting.
The group formed two large subgroups to deal with the two major terms of reference
which are the development of guidelines for carrying out sampling of catches on
shore and the provision of advice on adapting sampling programmes to deal with the
landing obligation.
In order to evaluate methods and develop guidelines for best practice in carrying out
sampling of commercial sampling of commercial fish catches onshore, a question-
naire was circulated before the meeting. This questionnaire was structured around
guidelines developed by the ICES Workshop on Practical Implementation of Statisti-
cally Sound Catch Sampling Programmes (WKPICS) for best practice at each stage of
the sampling process, and asked for a description of current practices at each of these
stages. Based on these questionnaires, common and specific problems were cata-
logued and potential solutions were identified. At the same time, the discussion of
the questionnaires provided a form of peer-review of the sampling designs and iden-
tified where improvements could be made. WGCATCH provided guidelines for de-
signing a sampling survey and summarized earlier guidelines provided by the 2010
Workshop on methods for merging métiers for fishery based sampling (WKMERGE)
The other main subject addressed by WGCATCH concerns the provision of advice on
adapting sampling protocols to deal with the impact of the introduction of the land-
ing obligation, which will alter discarding practices and result in additional catego-
ries of catch being landed. A second questionnaire was circulated before the meeting
to allow the group to identify the fleets that will be affected and possible issues that
are anticipated, as well as to propose solutions to adapt existing monitoring and
sampling schemes and to quantify bias resulting from the introduction of this regula-
tion. WGCATCH outlined a range of likely scenarios and the expected effects of
these on fishery sampling programmes, and developed guidelines for adapting sam-
pling schemes. The group also explored a range of analyses that could be conducted
in order to quantify bias resulting from the introduction of the landing obligation.

For at forbedre forvaltningsmulighederne for fiskeri i Nordsøen efter havtobis (Ammodytes marinus), blev der udviklet et stor-skala mærknings- og genfangstforsøg, hvor tobis blev mærket med Passive Integrated Transponders (PIT-mærker) for at få højopløselig rumlig og tidsmæssig information om tobisens livshistorieparametre. Under fire år, der dækkede både vinter-nedgravningen og forårs-fiskeri- sæsonen, blev over 25.000 tobis mærket og sluppet ud på deres sandbanke-habitater i forskellige områder af Nordsøen. Genfangster blev identificeret ved hjælp af scannere monteret på fabrikspumpestationer, der modtager fangster fra industrifiskeriet. Scanner-effektiviteten blev estimeret til >98%, og flertallet af alle danske tobislandinger blev scannet. Fangstrejser med genfangster blev rekonstrueret, og den mest sandsynlige fangstlokalitet blev estimeret ved at kombinere logbogsdata og fiskeriindsats. Genfangster fra tre fiskesæsoner (i alt 61, 141 og 509) viste overensstemmelse med den lokale fiskeri-udvikling under sæsonen med høj stationær adfærd for tobis. Data muliggør estimering af migration, lokal forekomst samt relativ fiskeri- og naturlig dødelighed
