ERTS-1 Virgin Islands experiment 589: Determine boundaries of ERTS and aircraft data within which useful water quality information can be obtained
The author has identified the following significant results. The boundaries of application of ERTS-1 and aircraft data are established for St. Thomas harbor within which useful water quality information can be obtained. In situ physical, chemical, and biological water quality and benthic data were collected. Moored current meters were employed. Optical measurements of solar irradiance, color test panel radiance and water absorption were taken. Procedures for correlating in situ optical, biological, and chemical data with underflight aircraft I2S data and ERTS-1 MSS scanner data are presented. Comparison of bulk and precision CCT computer printout data for this application is made, and a simple method for geometrically locating bulk data individual pixels based on land-water interface is described. ERTS spacecraft data and I2S aircraft imagery are correlated with optical in situ measurements of the harbor water, with the aircraft green photographic and ERTS-1 MSS-4 bands being the most useful. The drug titration paradox: more drug does not correlate with more effect in individual clinical data.
BACKGROUND
A fundamental concept in pharmacology is that increasing dose increases drug effect. This is the basis of anaesthetic titration: the dose is increased when increased drug effect is desired and decreased when reduced drug effect is desired. In the setting of titration, the correlation of doses and observed drug effects can be negative, for example increasing dose reduces drug effect. We have termed this the drug titration paradox. We hypothesised that this could be explained, at least in part, by intrasubject variability. If the drug titration paradox is simply an artifact of pooling population data, then a mixed-effects analysis that accounts for interindividual variability in drug sensitivity should 'flip' the observed correlation, such that increasing dose increases drug effect.
METHODS
We tested whether a mixed-effects analysis could correctly reveal the underlying pharmacology using previously published data obtained during automatic feedback control of mean arterial pressure (MAP) with alfentanil (effect site concentration, CeAlf) during surgery. The relationship between MAP and CeAlf was explored with linear regression and a linear mixed-effects model.
RESULTS
A linear mixed-effects model did not identify the correct underlying pharmacology because of the presence of the titration paradox in the individual data.
CONCLUSIONS
The relationship between drug dose and drug effect must be determined under carefully controlled experimental conditions. In routine care, where the effect is profoundly influenced by varying clinical conditions and drugs are titrated to achieve the desired effect, it is nearly impossible to draw meaningful conclusions about the relationship between dose and effect
Tissue eosinophilia induced by recombinant human interleukin-5 in the hamster cheek pouch membrane
Interleukin-5 (IL-5) is a cytokine that preferentially effects the development and function of eosinophils, and is considered important in the pathophysiology of allergic inflammation. In this study, we evaluated the ability of recombinant human IL-5 (rHu IL-5) to promote tissue eosinophilia and the importance of this eosinophilia to pathological alterations in vascular function. Repetitive subcutaneous administration for 18 days of rHu IL-5 resulted in a 7-fold increase in the number of eosinophils found in the ipsilateral hamster cheek pouch membrane. The contralateral cheek pouch membrane and peritoneum of these animals showed lesser but significant elevations in the number of eosinophils. In contrast, denatured rHu IL-5 did not elevate eosinophils in these tissues. Through the use of intravital microscopy and fluorometric analysis, rHu IL-5 treated hamster cheek pouch membranes were evaluated for alterations in microvascular permeability, using plasma clearance of FITC-dextran 150 as an index. Despite promoting a prominent tissue eosinophilia, the repetitive subcutaneous injections of rHu IL-5 did not alter the clearance of FITC-dextran 150. Topical application of rHu IL-5 to the cheek pouch, also, had no effect on the clearance of FITC-dextran 150. Immunofluorescence observations using an antibody to the granule protein, eosinophil peroxidase, indicated that the recruited cells had not degranulated. Our results support the importance of IL-5 in the recruitment of tissue eosinophils, but further stimulation is probably required to cause degranulation of these cells and the ensuing tissue damage
The Arecibo Methanol Maser Galactic Plane Survey - II: Statistical and Multi-wavelength Counterpart Analysis
We present an analysis of the properties of the 6.7 GHz methanol maser sample
detected in the Arecibo Methanol Maser Galactic Plane Survey. The distribution
of the masers in the Galaxy, and statistics of their multi-wavelength
counterparts is consistent with the hypothesis of 6.7 GHz maser emission being
associated with massive young stellar objects. Using the detection statistics
of our survey, we estimate the minimum number of methanol masers in the Galaxy
to be 1275. The l-v diagram of the sample shows the tangent point of the
Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm to be around 49.6 degrees, and suggests
occurrence of massive star formation along the extension of the Crux-Scutum
arm. A Gaussian component analysis of the maser spectra shows the mean
line-width to be 0.38 km/s which is more than a factor of two larger than what
has been reported in the literature. We also find no evidence that faint
methanol masers have different properties than those of their bright

Low-Frequency Radio Transients in the Galactic Center
We report the detection of a new radio transient source, GCRT J1746-2757,
located only 1.1 degrees north of the Galactic center. Consistent with other
radio transients toward the Galactic center, this source brightened and faded
on a time scale of a few months. No X-ray counterpart was detected. We also
report new 0.33 GHz measurements of the radio counterpart to the X-ray
transient source, XTE J1748-288, previously detected and monitored at higher
radio frequencies. We show that the spectrum of XTE J1748-288 steepened
considerably during a period of a few months after its peak. We also discuss

Will current rotational grazing management recommendations suit future intensive pastoral systems?
This review aimed to determine whether current grazing management practices will suit future intensive rotationally grazed pastoral systems. A review of literature on grazing management recommendations found that there was good agreement on the ‘principles’ required for optimal grazing management. While these management practices have stood the test of time, it is concluded that shifts in external pressures (e.g., climate, plant selection and breeding, system intensification) compared to the period when farm-level grazing recommendations were first developed, may necessitate a rethink of current grazing recommendations. Examples include greater pasture masses (e.g., around 4000 kg dry matter (DM)/ha vs. the recommended range of 2600 to 3200 kg DM/ha) where short-rotation (annual, biennial) and tetraploid ryegrasses are sown, provided a consistent post-grazing residual can be maintained (possibly between 40- and 70- mm height). Milder winters and the use of ryegrass cultivars with higher growth rates in late winter/early spring may necessitate either lower target pasture covers at calving or shorter rotation lengths during winter. Longer grazing rotations (well beyond the 3-leaf stage, i.e., equivalent to deferred grazing) can be recommended for select paddocks from mid-spring into summer, to increase seasonal resilience across the farm. Longer residuals (even up to 70 mm - i.e., almost double the recommended height) might improve plant survival during periods of high stress (e.g., heatwaves, droughts). Lastly, diverse species pastures may require specific management to suit dominant species other than perennial ryegrass
A Hidden Population of Massive Stars with Circumstellar Shells Discovered with the Spitzer Space Telescope
We have discovered a large number of circular and elliptical shells at 24
microns around luminous central sources with the MIPS instrument on-board the
Spitzer Space Telescope. Our archival follow-up effort has revealed 90% of
these circumstellar shells to be previously unknown. The majority of the shells
is only visible at 24 microns, but many of the central stars are detected at
multiple wavelengths from the mid- to the near-IR regime. The general lack of
optical counterparts, however, indicates that these sources represent a
population of highly obscured objects. We obtained optical and near-IR
spectroscopic observations of the central stars and find most of these objects
to be massive stars. In particular, we identify a large population of sources
that we argue represents a narrow evolutionary phase, closely related or

MSX, 2MASS, and the LMC: A Combined Near and Mid Infrared View
The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been observed by both the Midcourse
Space Experiment (MSX) in the mid-infrared and the Two Micron All Sky Survey
(2MASS) in the near-infrared. We have performed a cross-correlation of the 1806
MSX catalog sources and nearly 1.4 million 2MASS catalogued point and extended
sources and find 1664 matches. Using the available color information, we
identify a number of stellar populations and nebulae, including main sequence
stars, giant stars, red supergiants, carbon- and oxygen-rich asymptotic giant
branch (AGB) stars, planetary nebulae, H II regions, and other dusty objects
likely associated with early-type stars. 731 of these sources have no previous
identification. We compile a listing of all objects, which includes photometry
and astrometry. The 8.3 micron MSX sensitivity is the limiting factor for
object detection: only the brighter red objects, specifically the red
supergiants, AGB stars, planetary nebulae and HII regions, are detected in the
LMC. The remaining objects are likely in the Galactic foreground. The spatial
distribution of the infrared LMC sources may contribute to understanding
stellar formation and evolution and the overall galactic evolution. We
demonstrate that a combined mid- and near-infrared photometric baseline
provides a powerful means of identifying new objects in the LMC for future

Asymptotics of 10j symbols
The Riemannian 10j symbols are spin networks that assign an amplitude to each
4-simplex in the Barrett-Crane model of Riemannian quantum gravity. This
amplitude is a function of the areas of the 10 faces of the 4-simplex, and
Barrett and Williams have shown that one contribution to its asymptotics comes
from the Regge action for all non-degenerate 4-simplices with the specified
face areas. However, we show numerically that the dominant contribution comes
from degenerate 4-simplices. As a consequence, one can compute the asymptotics
of the Riemannian 10j symbols by evaluating a `degenerate spin network', where
the rotation group SO(4) is replaced by the Euclidean group of isometries of
R^3. We conjecture formulas for the asymptotics of a large class of Riemannian
and Lorentzian spin networks in terms of these degenerate spin networks, and
check these formulas in some special cases. Among other things, this conjecture
implies that the Lorentzian 10j symbols are asymptotic to 1/16 times the
