    Polymerisable octahedral rhenium cluster complexes as precursors for photo/electroluminescent polymers

    New polymerisable photoluminescent octahedral rhenium cluster complexes trans-[{Re₆Q₈}(TBP)₄VB)₂] (Q = S or Se; TBP – p-tert-butylpyridine; VB – vinyl benzoate) have been synthesised, characterised and used to construct rhe-nium cluster-organic polymer hybrid materials. These novel polymer systems are solution-processable and the rhenium clusters retain their photoluminescent properties within the polymer environment. Notably, when the rhenium cluster complexes are incorporated into the matrix of the electroluminescent polymer poly(N-vinylcarbazole), the resultant cluster polymer hybrid combined properties of both components and was used successfully in the construc-tion of a polymer light emitting diode (PLED). These prototype devices are the first PLEDs to incorporate octahedral rhenium clusters and provide the first direct evidence of the electroluminescent properties of rhenium clusters and indeed, to the best of our knowledge, of any member of the family of 24-electron hexanuclear cluster complexes of molybdenum, tungsten or rhenium

    Gender equity in hiring: examining the effectiveness of a personality-based algorithm

    IntroductionGender biases in hiring decisions remain an issue in the workplace. Also, current gender balancing techniques are scientifically poorly supported and lead to undesirable results, sometimes even contributing to activating stereotypes. While hiring algorithms could bring a solution, they are still often regarded as tools amplifying human prejudices. In this sense, talent specialists tend to prefer recommendations from experts, while candidates question the fairness of such tools, in particular, due to a lack of information and control over the standardized assessment. However, there is evidence that building algorithms based on data that is gender-blind, like personality - which has been shown to be mostly similar between genders, and is also predictive of performance, could help in reducing gender biases in hiring. The goal of this study was, therefore, to test the adverse impact of a personality-based algorithm across a large array of occupations.MethodThe study analyzed 208 predictive models designed for 18 employers. These models were tested on a global sample of 273,293 potential candidates for each respective role.ResultsMean weighted impact ratios of 0.91 (Female-Male) and 0.90 (Male-Female) were observed. We found similar results when analyzing impact ratios for 21 different job categories.DiscussionOur results suggest that personality-based algorithms could help organizations screen candidates in the early stages of the selection process while mitigating the risks of gender discrimination

    VIIRS On-Orbit Calibration and Performance Update

    The S-NPP VIIRS was launched on October 28, 2011 and activated on November 8, and then went through a series of intensive functional tests in order to establish the sensor's baseline characteristics and initial on-orbit performance. With the exception of large optical degradation in the NIR and SWIR spectral regions that is due to pre-launch mirror coating contamination, both the VIIRS instrument and its on-board calibrators continue to operate and function normally. With continuous dedicated effort, it is expected that most of the sensor calibration parameters will continue to meet their design requirements and that high quality data products will be continuously generated and used by the operational as well as research community

    Landsat 9 Thermal Infrared Sensor 2 Subsystem-Level Spectral Test Results

    Results from the Thermal Infrared Sensor 2 (TIRS-2) prelaunch spectral characterization at telescope and detector subsystem level are presented. The derived relative spectral response (RSR) shape is expected to be very similar to the instrument-level spectral response and provides an initial estimate of the RSR and its differences to the component-level RSR measurements. Such differences were observed at TIRS- 1 and are likely a result of angular dependence of the spectral response of the detector. The subsystem RSR measurements also provide an opportunity for a preliminary assessment of the spectral requirements. Final requirements verification will be performed at future thermal vacuum environmental testing with the fully assembled TIRS-2 instrument

    Dynamic Separation of Chaotic Signals in the Presence of Noise

    The problem of separation of an observed sum of chaotic signals into the individual components in the presence of noise on the path to the observer is considered. A noise threshold is found above which high-quality separation is impossible. Below the threshold, each signal is recovered with any prescribed accuracy.     Mapping Rora expression in resting and activated CD4+ T cells

    The transcription factor Rora has been shown to be important for the development of ILC2 and the regulation of ILC3, macrophages and Treg cells. Here we investigate the role of Rora across CD4+ T cells in general, but with an emphasis on Th2 cells, both in vitro as well as in the context of several in vivo type 2 infection models. We dissect the function of Rora using overexpression and a CD4-conditional Rora-knockout mouse, as well as a RORA-reporter mouse. We establish the importance of Rora in CD4+ T cells for controlling lung inflammation induced by Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection, and have measured the effect on downstream genes using RNA-seq. Using a systematic stimulation screen of CD4+ T cells, coupled with RNA-seq, we identify upstream regulators of Rora, most importantly IL-33 and CCL7. Our data suggest that Rora is a negative regulator of the immune system, possibly through several downstream pathways, and is under control of the local microenvironment

    Binary open clusters in the Milky Way: photometric and spectroscopic analysis of NGC 5617 and Trumpler 22

    Using photometry and high resolution spectroscopy we investigate for the first time the physical connection between the open clusters NGC 5617 and Trumpler 22. Based on new CCD photometry we report their spatial proximity and common age of ~70 Myr. Based on high resolution spectra collected using the HERMES and UCLES spectrographs on the Anglo-Australian telescope, we present radial velocities and abundances for Fe, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca and Ni. The measured radial velocities are -38.63 ± 2.25 km s⁻¹ for NGC 5617 and -38.46 ± 2.08 km s⁻¹ for Trumpler 22. The mean metallicity of NGC 5617 was found to be [Fe/H] = -0.18 ± 0.02 and for Trumpler 22 was found to be [Fe/H] = -0.17 ± 0.04. The two clusters share similar abundances across the other elements, indicative of a common chemical enrichment history of these clusters. Together with common motions and ages we confirm that NGC 5617 and Trumpler 22 are a primordial binary cluster pair in the Milky Way.Facultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica
