People, landscape and wool weaving in Venezuelan Andes

    Get PDF
Wool weaving has been practiced in the Venezuelan Andean region for centuries, specifically at the Paramo ecosystem. This activity was introduced by the Spaniards and shaped by the relation of its inhabitants with the environment, warm clothing needs, climate, and the isolation of the place. Blankets and ruanas have been made traditionally on elementary handlooms by weavers who still use handspun wool, cotton, and natural dyes. Beauty in simplicity has built a singular aesthetic to be worn within the mist of the mountains. This paper intends to share a personal encounter of the authors with the community of weavers, spinners, dyers, sheep breeders, farmers, the landscape, and the culture of the Venezuelan Andes through wool-fiber weaving. A visual journey of this encounter will be discussed to illustrate and appreciate the way of life and textile making of the Paramo people and their silent experience

PregradoINGENIERO(A) EN INDUSTRIA

[Purpose] The objective of this paper is to study alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in both the electronic contracting of goods and/or services and interactive advertising. [Methodology/Approach/Design] The Spanish and European regulations will be analyzed in terms of regulation and self-regulation mechanisms. Self-regulation instruments are a suitable complement to current legal regulations. [Findings] Although disputes that may arise between consumers and businesses can be settled in court, the circumstances of cases involving e-commerce and interactive advertising may determine that the use of out-of-court instruments is appropriate. In this sense, self-regulation systems promote conflict prevention. In the event that it arises, it is about reaching a faster resolution than the courts of justice, cheaper and carried out by specialists in the matter. [Practical Implications] The implications of this investigation may be applicable to transactions of goods and services in general, to civil society and to the public sector. [Originality] This investigation demonstrates the convenience and significance of considering out-of-court dispute resolution mechanisms over conventional means, both in Spain and in the European Union. The self-regulation instruments are based on a Code of Conduct and an impartial and independent control body that applies it. Normally, codes of conduct are based on the application of different instruments for extrajudicial conflict resolution.[Purpose] The objective of this paper is to study alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in both the electronic contracting of goods and/or services and interactive advertising. Design of a multimodal database for research on automatic detection of severe apnoea cases

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to present the design of a multimodal database suitable for research on new possibilities for automatic diagnosis of patients with severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). Early detection of severe apnoea cases can be very useful to give priority to their early treatment optimizing the expensive and time-consuming tests of current diagnosis methods based on full overnight sleep in a hospital. This work is part of an on-going collaborative project between medical and signal processing groups towards the design of a multimodal database as an innovative resource to promote new research efforts on automatic OSA diagnosis through speech and image processing technologies. In this contribution we present the multimodal design criteria derived from the analysis of specific voice properties related to OSA physiological effects as well as from the morphological facial characteristics in apnoea patients. Details on the database structure and data collection methodology are also given as it is intended to be an open resource to promote further research in this field. Finally, preliminary experimental results on automatic OSA voice assessment are presented for the collected speech data in our OSA multimodal database. Standard GMM speaker recognition techniques obtain an overall correct classification rate of 82%. This represents an initial promising result underlining the interest of this research framework and opening further perspectives for improvement using more specific speech and image recognition technologies
