In 2007 NORD were appointed to work with the Olympic Delivery Authority to develop a strong contextual approach to a key utility building within the Olympic Park. The building is not designed as an event venue in its own right, but as part of a number of buildings that form the fabric of the Olympic site itself; having permanency, weight and dignity. The utility structures are being developed to consider a common palette of reference materials where these relate to their use and location Awards and reviews: Article In Brick Bulletin. Creating an Inclusive Society: Mainstreaming Disability Based on the Social Economy Example

    Get PDF
[Excerpt] This guide, drafted in cooperation with the European Disability Forum (EDF), is one of several initiatives undertaken by the Disability Working Group of the European Standing Conference of Co-operatives, Mutual Societies, Associations and Foundations (CEP-CMAF) aimed at raising awareness and promoting the integration of people with disabilities and disability issues in society as a whole and in Social Economy enterprises and organisations in particular. The guide is published within the framework of the 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities for All (EYEO) in order to take full advantage of the opportunities that the Year offers to raise awareness and give visibility to these issues. However, its relevance and use will extend beyond the European Year

ABSTRACT The INTHERPOL testing facility, developed at EDF R&D is designed in order to perform pure thermal fatigue test on tubular specimen under mono-frequential thermal load. INTHERPOL specimens consist of a 300 mm length and 400 mm diameter pipe comprising a circumferential welding located at a distance of 200 mm from the bottom of the specimen. According to the test considered, the models can have various types of industrial surface finish and various configurations of welded joints. Thermal cycling is carried out on a 70 mm broad sector of the internal surface of the specimen. The cold shock is generated by the pulverization of a cold-water spray while the hot shock is obtained by submitting the cooled surface to an intense infrared radiation. Four tests have been carried out with a thermal amplitude of 120 to 140°C and a cycle's duration ranging of 5 to 8 seconds on mock-up including several surface finish. Each fatigue test is stopped periodically in order to detect the initiation and the evolution of the cracks by intermediate die penetrant inspections. During the test, the temperature is measured by using thermocouples. The recorded temperatures are used as input data to perform finite element simulations in order to obtain the stress and strain fields necessary to interpret experimental results

YES! Youth are interested, engaged and ready to get agriculture moving

    Get PDF
8 páginasThis feature highlights the importance of attracting youth to careers and entrepreneurial opportunities in agriculture. It also illustrates the fact that youth are indeed interested by introducing several enthusiastic, committed, young agripreneurs. It tells their stories which reflect passion for an often under-rated and under estimated industry. Finally, this feature examines the important work of the Caribbean Action under the Agriculture Policy Programme (APP) to support youth in this vital industry, and the continued focus that is required to ensure the future success for agriculture in the Region

What's the big deal about MSMEs?

    Get PDF
7 páginasThis Feature highlights the importance of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in agriculture in the Caribbean, and the role that they play in the development process. It recognises that in spite of their initiative, self-investment and hard work, small agriculture based business owners do face challenges

Farming green - using natural plant material to stimulate crop growth and enhance animal health

    Get PDF
10 páginasThis feature highlights ‘green’ farming solutions that have undergone validation trials by the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) under the Intra-ACP Agriculture Policy Programme (APP). The preliminary results from these trials provide encouraging signs of their potential to address long-standing and common production issues, foster sustainable growth and enhance the viability of small farming systems

Mainstreaming climate change and disaster risk management in agricultural policy and planning

    Get PDF
8 páginasThis feature highlights the current vulnerability of the Caribbean agriculture sector to natural hazard impacts, the enhanced effect of climate change, the need to build DRM and CCA into agricultural planning, and the actions that need to be taken. An APP-supported study seeks to enhance understanding of the gaps in agricultural planning which can be filled in order to make the Caribbean more resilient to natural hazards and climate change

    Changing climate, changing farming systems

    Get PDF
8 páginasThis feature highlights the already known causes and potential impacts of climate change, as well as the options for response in the Caribbean farming community. It also highlights initiatives that are being carried out under the Agricultural Policy Programme (APP), funded by the European Union (EU) under the 10th EDF, towards addressing these changes and resulting challenges. The main goal of the programme is to enhance the regional capabilities of the agricultural sector in eradicating poverty, and the specific objective is to do this through the support of smallholder agriculture. Addressing climate change impacts to agriculture is an absolute must in order to be truly helpfu
