    The high power of the Hermes satellite enables two-way television and voice communication with small ground terminals. The Portable Earth Terminal (PET) and the Transportable Earth Terminal (TET) were developed and built by NASA-Lewis to provide communications capability to short-term users. The NASA-Lewis mobile terminals are described in terms of vehicles and onboard equipment, as well as operation aspects, including use in the field. The section on demonstrations divides the uses into categories of medicine, education, technology and government. Applications of special interest within each category are briefly described

    A mathematical model for jet engine combustor pollutant emissions

    Mathematical modeling for the description of the origin and disposition of combustion-generated pollutants in gas turbines is presented. A unified model in modular form is proposed which includes kinetics, recirculation, turbulent mixing, multiphase flow effects, swirl and secondary air injection. Subelements of the overall model were applied to data relevant to laboratory reactors and practical combustor configurations. Comparisons between the theory and available data show excellent agreement for basic CO/H2/Air chemical systems. For hydrocarbons the trends are predicted well including higher-than-equilibrium NO levels within the fuel rich regime. Although the need for improved accuracy in fuel rich combustion is indicated, comparisons with actual jet engine data in terms of the effect of combustor-inlet temperature is excellent. In addition, excellent agreement with data is obtained regarding reduced NO emissions with water droplet and steam injection

    Superdiffusion in the Dissipative Standard Map

    We consider transport properties of the chaotic (strange) attractor along unfolded trajectories of the dissipative standard map. It is shown that the diffusion process is normal except of the cases when a control parameter is close to some special values that correspond to the ballistic mode dynamics. Diffusion near the related crisises is anomalous and non-uniform in time: there are large time intervals during which the transport is normal or ballistic, or even superballistic. The anomalous superdiffusion seems to be caused by stickiness of trajectories to a non-chaotic and nowhere dense invariant Cantor set that plays a similar role as cantori in Hamiltonian chaos. We provide a numerical example of such a sticky set. Distribution function on the sticky set almost coincides with the distribution function (SRB measure) of the chaotic attractor.Comment: 10 Figure

    Training Leader Emotion Regulation and Leadership Effectiveness

    Purpose The purpose of this study was to test whether we could train the regulation of affective displays of leaders in terms of the emotion regulation strategy of deep acting (displaying feelings one also experiences) and display of positive affect. We also tested whether this resulted in improved leadership effectiveness (i.e., a mediation model in which the training results in greater leadership effectiveness through improved emotion regulation). Design/Methodology/Approach Data were obtained from a field experiment. We randomly assigned N = 31 leaders (rated by N = 60 subordinates) to a control group without training or an experimental group with emotion regulation training. Before and 2 weeks after the intervention, deep acting (leader-rated) and positive affective displays and leadership effectiveness (subordinate-rated) were assessed. Findings The training had positive effects on deep acting, positive affective displays, and leadership effectiveness. Deep acting and positive affect mediated the relationship between the intervention and leadership effectiveness. Implications We discuss how this helps build the case both for an emotional labor approach to leadership and for the leadership development potential of such an emotional labor approach. Originality/Value The findings of this study represent the first causal evidence that leader emotion regulation can be trained, improved emotion regulation results in greater leadership effectiveness and is one of the first empirical studies that integrates emotional labor theory to leadership effectiveness. It is therefore important from a theory development perspective
