How does media shape our leadership identities? How are leaders portrayed in television and film, and how does this influence our self-development? There is research on media effects and how we are shaped by the media we consume, but there is a gap pertaining to how our leadership identity is shaped by the media we consume. The purpose of this research was to explore the gap in both leadership literature and media effects literature in regards to how entertainment media shapes leadership identity development. This study answered the following research questions: What is the impact of entertainment media and fictional characters on the Developing Self factor of the Leadership Identity Development Model? What is the impact of entertainment media and fictional characters on the Developmental Influences factor of the Leadership Identity Development Model? Fourteen students, seven freshmen and seven seniors, pursuing an undergraduate leadership degree at Texas A&M University were recruited and interviewed for the study. A qualitative study using a constructivist approach and semi-structured interviews were used. Open coding using a deductive lens and constant comparative method was used for data analysis. Themes were categorized as they fit under the Developing Self and Developmental Influence factors of the Leadership Identity Development Model. Participants discussed the various ways entertainment media influenced their behavior and leadership development. The participants in this study showed how entertainment media and fictional characters could impact the leadership identity development process. Participants shared how they grew in self awareness, were motivated into leadership, and developed interpersonal skills from watching characters on the screen. Participants even shared how they modeled themselves and their leadership style after various fictional characters. The seniors in this study were able to identify and articulate different leadership concepts they had seen in the television they watched for entertainment, demonstrating critical media literacy, and shared how the use of public pedagogy aided them in the development of this skill. As a result of this study, critical leadership media literacy is being introduced as a new leadership skillset, defined as the ability to analyze and interpret leadership models, theories, and philosophies in entertainment media. This research provides suggestions for future researchers to explore and eventually measure entertainment media’s impact on leadership identity

BPSK Waveform Demodulation Using an all Analog Gaussian Wavelet Transform

A binary phase shift keying (BPSK) waveform is a ubiquitous digital communications modulation technique. Presented is a novel method of demodulating a BPSK waveform back into its constitute bits by way of an analog Gaussian wavelet transform. A comprehensive design method for an all-analog wavelet transform is presented. This includes converting the wavelet transform into a state-space form by way of a singular value decomposition of the daughter wavelets, and the design of an analog circuit implementing the wavelet transform. The Gaussian wavelet is used for its ability to capture fast transients in an input signal, which is the key factor which allows for the wavelet transform to demodulate a BPSK waveform. The validity of an all-analog transform is presented through simulations and laboratory measurements. Because of the nature of the wavelet transform this method of demodulation has great noise resilience which is demonstrated both with simulated and laboratory measured bit error rates

This essay analyzes five Peruvian plays produced between 1996 and 1998: Ojos bonitos, cuadros feos, by Mario Vargas Llosa; El día de la luna, by Eduardo Adrianzén; Deseos ocultos, by Jaime Nieto; Un verso pasajero and La manzana prohibida by Gonzalo Rodríguez Risco. Though this analysis, the essay discusses how the notion of rosquete, or the male homosexual, has been produced and negotiated in the Lima of this period, and how these five plays resignify these constructions

The role of MRI in stratifying and evaluating chronic liver disease

Chronic liver disease is a highly prevalent condition associated with significant morbidity and mortality. There is need for clinicians to stratify chronic liver disease and for researchers to define meaningful study endpoints. Currently this is often reliant on liver biopsy histology, which is known to be a flawed gold standard. There is a need to develop novel, non-invasive techniques for the evaluation of chronic liver disease that are accurate and reliable. In this thesis I have demonstrated that multiparametric MRI can stage hepatic fibrosis in an unselected cohort with performance comparable to existing non-invasive fibrosis markers. The assessment of fibrosis is however confounded by inflammation. The sensitivity of multiparametric MRI to inflammation allows the differentiation of simple steatosis and NASH but in a non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) cohort, multiparametric MRI fails to predict fibrosis stage. Evaluating NAFLD with magnetic resonance spectroscopy has shown that this technique is feasible and that lipidomic differences can be demonstrated in patients with NAFLD. Exploring the role of multiparametric MRI in primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) has demonstrated a characteristic pattern in the distribution of corrected Tl in PSC suggesting that multiparametric MRI may have a role in its diagnosis and evaluation

Getting to e-Government : the role of methods

    Get PDF
This work considers the value of applying design methods and other techniques in the implementation of electronic public services. This relates specifically to the use of Information Society Technology (IST) and related topics, for example systems analysis, change management and process reengineering specifically within the British local government sector. This is commonly referred to by the shorthand expression 'e-Government'.The paper examines the motivation behind methods - their design and application, a summary of their development over the past few decades, and an assessment of e-Government centric techniques. This involves a discussion of some of those techniques through a case study and fieldwork concerned with methods applied by a specific group of public agencies, the Metropolitan Borough Councils. E-government forms a complex and inter-organisational innovation, and the work develops an evaluation of its growth since the mid to late 1990's. There is an exploration of the experiences of a variety of methods and their application in light of new and divergent ways of working in the public sector. More recent techniques supportive of its diffusion are introduced, and the thesis takes into account institutional, technological and organisational factors within the public sector specifically and how the concept and practicality of methods are being applied. The future direction and nature of methods within this field are key considerations and form the core of the conclusions of the work.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceFujitsu ServicesGBUnited Kingdo

Patients hospitalised because of mental illness often have risk factors for contracting HCV. Scaling-up HCV screening for all psychiatric inpatients as a case-detection strategy for viral elimination is underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of scaling-up HCV screening and treatment for psychiatry hospital admissions in Switzerland vs. the current standard-of-care risk-based approach, where only those with a history of substance misuse disorder are offered testing. HCV prevalence by history of substance misuse disorder was analysed in medical records from inpatient admissions to a Swiss psychiatry department. Cost-effectiveness was analysed from a healthcare provider perspective through a decision-tree screening model, using these HCV prevalence data. Model and parameter uncertainty were assessed using deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analyses. Prevalence of HCV in psychiatry inpatients with a history of substance misuse disorder (n = 1,013) was 25.7%, compared with 3.5% among the remaining inpatients (n = 3,535). Scaling up HCV screening and treatment for all psychiatry admissions was cost-effective vs. the risk-based approach, with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of US9,188perqualityadjustedlifeyeargained.TheincrementalcosteffectivenessratioremainedcosteffectiveconsideringaHCVprevalenceaslowas0.079,188 per quality-adjusted life-year gained. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio remained cost-effective considering a HCV prevalence as low as 0.07%. The population-level net monetary benefit of the generalised screening approach was US435,156,348, with 917 additional patients per year detected and treated at a cost of US3,294perperson(vs.US3,294 per person (vs. US2,122 under risk-based screening). Scaling up HCV screening and treatment at diagnosis with all-oral, interferon-free regimens as a generalised approach for psychiatric admissions was cost-effective and could support reaching World Health Organization targets for HCV elimination by 2030. Patients hospitalised because of mental illness often have risk factors for HCV. We found that testing all psychiatry patients in hospital for HCV was cost-effective compared with testing only patients who have a history of substance misuse. Scaling up HCV testing and treatment could help to wipe out HCV

Immobilisation of Higher Activity Wastes from Nuclear Reactor Production of 99

A variety of intermediate- and low-level liquid and solid wastes are produced from reactor production of 99Mo using UAl alloy or UO2 targets and in principle can be collectively or individually converted into waste forms. At ANSTO, we have legacy acidic uranyl-nitrate-rich intermediate level waste (ILW) from the latter, and an alkaline liquid ILW, a U-rich filter cake, plus a shorter lived liquid stream that rapidly decays to low-level waste (LLW) standards, from the former. The options considered consist of cementitious products, glasses, glass-ceramics, or ceramics produced by vitrification or hot isostatic pressing for intermediate-level wastes. This paper discusses the progress in waste form development and processing to treat ANSTO’s ILW streams arising from 99Mo. The various waste forms and the reason for the process option chosen will be reviewed. We also address the concerns over adapting our chosen process for use in a hot-cell environment

Quantitative MRCP and metrics of bile duct disease over time in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis:A prospective study

    Get PDF
Background: Imaging markers of biliary disease in primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) have potential for use in clinical and trial disease monitoring. Herein, we evaluate how quantitative magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) metrics change over time, as per the natural history of disease. Methods: Individuals with PSC were prospectively scanned using non‐contrast MRCP. Quantitative metrics were calculated using MRCP+ post‐processing software to assess duct diameters and dilated and strictured regions. Additionally, a hepatopancreatobiliary radiologist (blinded to clinical details, biochemistry and quantitative biliary metrics) reported each scan, including ductal disease assessment according to the modified Amsterdam Cholangiographic Score (MAS). Results: At baseline, 14 quantitative MRCP+ metrics were found to be significantly different in patients with PSC (N = 55) compared to those with primary biliary cholangitis (N = 55), autoimmune hepatitis (N = 57) and healthy controls (N = 18). In PSC specifically, baseline metrics quantifying the number of strictures and the number and length of bile ducts correlated with the MAS, transient elastography and serum ALP values (p < 0.01 for all correlations). Over a median 371‐day follow‐up (range: 364–462), 29 patients with PSC underwent repeat MRCP, of whom 15 exhibited quantitative changes in MRCP+ metrics. Compared to baseline, quantitative MRCP+ identified an increasing number of strictures over time (p < 0.05). Comparatively, no significant differences in biochemistry, elastography or the MAS were observed between timepoints. Quantitative MRCP+ metrics remained stable in non‐PSC liver disease. Conclusion: Quantitative MRCP+ identifies changes in ductal disease over time in PSC, despite stability in biochemistry, liver stiffness and radiologist‐derived cholangiographic assessment (trial registration: ISRCTN39463479)
