Computer programs were developed to calculate the parameters commonly used in fisheries statistics: catch per unit effort, catch by species, size distribution, etc. These parameters were computed for collective fishing, purse seine and beach seine; important aspects of the artisanal fisheries in the Ebrié Lagoon

The artificial reopening of the lagoon inlet, made in Grand-Bantam in September 1987 in order to reduce the aquatic weeds proliferation, induced some environmental and fish communities alterations in the eastern part of the Ebrié lagoon (Côte d'Ivoire). A preliminary field survey made in May 1988 shows an increase in the salinity rate and an increase of the marine component among fish communities, when compared to the former ecological state of this lagoon area (reference data of 1980 and 1981)

A first treatment of the statistical data of 1978 and 1979 on the collective fishing showed a decrease of total catches in the Ebrié Lagoon. The same diminution was found in the amount of smoked-fish collected in two different places of the lagoon. This fall is due to a smaller effort in the lagoon of the purse-seines in the Abidjan area and a decrease of the catches per unit of effort

This work is the result of one year of investigations on the artisanal fisheries of the Aby-Tendo-Ehy lagoon. The structure of fish catches varies with the fisheries zones and the fishing gears, but is relatively stable all year along, in the spite of the existence of some species with well worked seasonary cycle. The composition of beach seines catches, which are relatively unselective fishing gears, is: - in the Tendo lagoon (oligohaline) and Ehy lagoon (freshwater): Chrysichthys spp. 35.1%, Tilapia spp. 18.9%, Acentrogobius schlegelii 15.7%, Ethmalosa fimbriata 12% (those are two seasonary species), Tylochromis jentinki 8.8%, Elops lacerta 5.6%, other species 3.9%. - in the south of the Aby lagoon, under tide influence, Ethmalosa fimbriata 79%, Elops lacerta 12%, Chrysichthys spp. 6%, other species 3%. A preliminary estimation of 7900 tons for this lagoon artisanal fisheries total production is made for 1979 (from representative fishing villages) and can be shared as follows: - beach seines: 5300 tons; - purse seines and "syndicat" seines: 2600 tons; individual fishing: not estimated, it mostly concerns fill nets

Since 1974 we have been collecting statistics on the main fishing gears in the ivorian lagoons. In order to get good estimation of the catches, it is often more convenient to measure the fishes and to convert this data into weights through a length-weight relationship. In this work we computed this relation for 43 species found in the Aby and Ebrié lagoons

In the Ebrié lagoon fishes are mostly caught by means of 6 kinds of fishing gear: small and large mesh gillnets (respectively 1.5-2 and 6.5-8 inches stretched mesh), cast-nets and multi-hooked lines for individual fishermen, and beach seines and ring-nets for collective fishing. Statistical data gathered during 1977 allowed an estimation of total catches: about 6700 tons. The bulk of the catch, 4800 tons, came from beach nets and ring nets, the contribution of which is nearly the same. Individual fishing gear, small mesh gillnets repesenting the main part, account for 25 to 30% of total catch; about 1900 tons for year 1977. Six species, or species groups, comprise more than 85% of the catch. In the Abidjan area, where marine influence is the more noticeable, ring nets are more numerous and their catches increased since 1975. On the other hand, fish captures in unsalted and brackish waters seem to show a stagnancy and a decrease in fish lengths; this phenomenon is probably in connection with beach-seine excessive fishing effort and/or their small meshes (one inch stretched)

Several census of fhe fishing units using mini seine nets were carried out in 1994 and1995. The first census, in October 1994, set the inquiry protocol
