    The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN’s Large H√adron Collider (LHC) has started to collect and analyze proton-proton collisions at √s = 7TeV from the first physics run of the LHC. At the time of this meeting, CMS had collected a 17 nb−1 of collision data, including small samples at lower energies of 0.9TeV and 2.36TeV. While these samples are too small for observation of top quark pair production, the results presented here demonstrate good detector performance and illustrate well-understood physics signatures that will lead in the near future to re-observation of the top quark at the LHC. Those signatures include jets, isolated muons and electrons from weak gauge boson decay, and separated secondary vertices from b-quark jets. With the capability to identify these signatures in collision data, CMS is poised for top physics studies from the first LHC physics run

    A modified Fresnel scattering model for the parameterization of Fresnel returns, part 2.3A

    A modified Fresnel scatter model is presented and the revised model is compared with observations from the Poker Flat, Alaska, radar, the SOUSY radar and the Jimcamarca radar. The modifications to the original model have been made to better account for the pulse width dependence and height dependence of backscattered power observed at vertical incidence at lower VHF. Vertical profiles of backscattered power calculated using the revised model and routine radiosonde data show good agreement with observed backscattered power profiles. Relative comparisons of backscattered power using climatological data for the model agree fairly well with observed backscattered power profiles from Poker Flat, Jicamarca, and SOUSY

    The masses and decay constants of the ground state heavy χQ2(Q=b,c)\chi_{Q2}(Q=b,c) tensor mesons are calculated in the framework of the QCD sum rules approach. The obtained results on the masses are in good consistency with the experimental values.     Climatology of tropospheric vertical velocity spectra

    Vertical velocity power spectra obtained from Poker Flat, Alaska; Platteville, Colorado; Rhone Delta, France; and Ponape, East Caroline Islands using 50-MHz clear-air radars with vertical beams are given. The spectra were obtained by analyzing the quietest periods from the one-minute-resolution time series for each site. The lengths of available vertical records ranged from as long as 6 months at Poker Flat to about 1 month at Platteville. The quiet-time vertical velocity spectra are shown. Spectral period ranging from 2 minutes to 4 hours is shown on the abscissa and power spectral density is given on the ordinate. The Brunt-Vaisala (B-V) periods (determined from nearby sounding balloons) are indicated. All spectra (except the one from Platteville) exhibit a peak at periods slightly longer than the B-V period, are flat at longer periods, and fall rapidly at periods less than the B-V period. This behavior is expected for a spectrum of internal waves and is very similar to what is observed in the ocean (Eriksen, 1978). The spectral amplitudes vary by only a factor of 2 or 3 about the mean, and show that under quiet conditions vertical velocity spectra from the troposphere are very similar at widely different locations

    Septic physeal separation of proximal femur in a newborn

    In newborns physeal separations and septic osteomyelitis or arthritis are unusual, representing a problem in diagnosis and treatment. Therapy needs to be carried out soon in order to prevent anatomical and functional consequences. Association between septic event and physeal separation is rare. We report a 28-day-old female, admitted for elevated temperature, who underwent three nonorthopaedic surgical procedures before, and orthopaedic evaluation 8 days after admission. After an X-ray and an ultrasonography a septic arthritis with consequent hip dislocation was supposed. Only at the time of surgery a separation between the epiphysio-trochanteric nuclei complex and the femoral shaft was observed, with clear hip joint. The interest in this case consists in the difficulty of the differential diagnosis at the first evaluation, the orthopaedic misdiagnosis based on the lack of complete preoperative imaging, and finally the long-term excellent result after a prompt surgical treatment

    Christian Participants Responses to Counselor Disclosure of Personal Values

    In a systematic replication of Lewis and Epperson (1991), 195 students randomly received Secular/humanist, Traditional, or Christian pretherapy value information. Participants reported their perceptions of the counselor’s values and willingness to see the counselor for a variety of personal problems. Participants perceived a significant difference in personal values among the counselors. Both main and interaction effects were significant for willingness to see the counselor: Evangelicals generally expressed more willingness to see the Christian counselor, while Others’ willingness was problem-specific. Epperson (Epperson & Lewis, 1987; Lewis and Epperson, 1991) found traditional counselors preferred over Christian or feminist counselors. In contrast, the present results indicate that presenting problem, and client personal values, and therapist personal values interact, and that Evangelical Christian clients may be more attracted to counselors who espouse similar Christian values. It is tentatively concluded that pretherapy value information can help clients make informed choices about whether to enter therapy with a specific therapist. Providing such information is an ethically-sensitive response to the spiritual concerns of these clients
