    Observation of double radiative capture on pionic hydrogen

    We report the first observation of double radiative capture on pionic hydrogen. The experiment was conducted at the TRIUMF cyclotron using the RMC spectrometer, and detected γ\gamma--ray coincidences following π\pi^- stops in liquid hydrogen. We found the branching ratio for double radiative capture to be (3.05±0.27(stat.)±0.31(syst.))×105(3.05 \pm 0.27(stat.) \pm 0.31(syst.)) \times 10^{-5}. The measured branching ratio and angle-energy distributions support the theoretical prediction of a dominant contribution from the ππγγ\pi \pi \to \gamma \gamma annihilation mechanism.Comment: 4 Pages, 4 Figures. accepted for publication in Phys.     Benefit of respiratory gating in the Danish Breast Cancer Group partial breast irradiation trial

    Background and purpose: Partial breast irradiation (PBI)has beenthe Danish Breast Cancer Group(DBCG) standard for selected breast cancer patients since 2016 based onearlyresults from the DBCG PBI trial.During trial accrual, respiratory-gated radiotherapy was introduced in Denmark. This study aims to investigate the effect of respiratory-gating on mean heart dose (MHD).Patients and methods: From 2009 to 2016 the DBCG PBI trial included 230 patientswith left-sided breast cancer receiving external beam PBI, 40 Gy/15 fractions/3 weeks.Localization of the tumor bed on the planning CT scan, the use of respiratory-gating, coverage of the clinical target volume (CTV), and doses to organs at risk were collected.Results: Respiratory-gating was used in 123 patients (53 %). In 176 patients (77 %) the tumor bed was in the upper and in 54 patients (23 %) in the lower breast quadrants. The median MHD was 0.37 Gy (interquartile range 0.26-0.57 Gy), 0.33 Gy (0.23-0.49 Gy) for respiratory-gating, and 0.49 Gy (0.31-0.70 Gy) for free breathing, p < 0.0001. MHD was < 1 Gy in 206 patients (90 %) and < 2 Gy in 221 patients (96 %). Respiratory-gating led to significantly lower MHD for upper-located, but not for lower-located tumor beds, however, all MHD were low irrespective of respiratory-gating. Respiratory-gating did not improve CTV coverage or lower lung doses.Conclusions: PBI ensured a low MHD for most patients. Adding respiratory-gating further reduced MHD for upper-located but not for lower-located tumor beds but did not influence target coverage or lung doses. Respiratory-gating is no longer DBCG standard for left-sided PBI

    Hydrogen bond rotations as a uniform structural tool for analyzing protein architecture

    Proteins fold into three-dimensional structures, which determine their diverse functions. The conformation of the backbone of each structure is locally at each Cα effectively described by conformational angles resulting in Ramachandran plots. These, however, do not describe the conformations around hydrogen bonds, which can be non-local along the backbone and are of major importance for protein structure. Here, we introduce the spatial rotation between hydrogen bonded peptide planes as a new descriptor for protein structure locally around a hydrogen bond. Strikingly, this rotational descriptor sampled over high-quality structures from the protein data base (PDB) concentrates into 30 localized clusters, some of which correlate to the common secondary structures and others to more special motifs, yet generally providing a unifying systematic classification of local structure around protein hydrogen bonds. It further provides a uniform vocabulary for comparison of protein structure near hydrogen bonds even between bonds in different proteins without alignment

    Robust Bounds on Choosing from Large Tournaments

    Tournament solutions provide methods for selecting the "best" alternatives from a tournament and have found applications in a wide range of areas. Previous work has shown that several well-known tournament solutions almost never rule out any alternative in large random tournaments. Nevertheless, all analytical results thus far have assumed a rigid probabilistic model, in which either a tournament is chosen uniformly at random, or there is a linear order of alternatives and the orientation of all edges in the tournament is chosen with the same probabilities according to the linear order. In this work, we consider a significantly more general model where the orientation of different edges can be chosen with different probabilities. We show that a number of common tournament solutions, including the top cycle and the uncovered set, are still unlikely to rule out any alternative under this model. This corresponds to natural graph-theoretic conditions such as irreducibility of the tournament. In addition, we provide tight asymptotic bounds on the boundary of the probability range for which the tournament solutions select all alternatives with high probability.Comment: Appears in the 14th Conference on Web and Internet Economics (WINE), 201

    Multi-decadal changes in tundra environments and ecosystems: Synthesis of the International Polar Year-Back to the Future Project (IPY-BTF).

    Understanding the responses of tundra systems to global change has global implications. Most tundra regions lack sustained environmental monitoring and one of the only ways to document multi-decadal change is to resample historic research sites. The International Polar Year (IPY) provided a unique opportunity for such research through the Back to the Future (BTF) project (IPY project #512). This article synthesizes the results from 13 papers within this Ambio Special Issue. Abiotic changes include glacial recession in the Altai Mountains, Russia; increased snow depth and hardness, permafrost warming, and increased growing season length in sub-arctic Sweden; drying of ponds in Greenland; increased nutrient availability in Alaskan tundra ponds, and warming at most locations studied. Biotic changes ranged from relatively minor plant community change at two sites in Greenland to moderate change in the Yukon, and to dramatic increases in shrub and tree density on Herschel Island, and in sub-arctic Sweden. The population of geese tripled at one site in northeast Greenland where biomass in non-grazed plots doubled. A model parameterized using results from a BTF study forecasts substantial declines in all snowbeds and increases in shrub tundra on Niwot Ridge, Colorado over the next century. In general, results support and provide improved capacities for validating experimental manipulation, remote sensing, and modeling studies
