    Shrine Pilgrimage (Ziyārat) in Turco-Iranian Cultural Regions

    Academic studies, dedicated to various aspects of religiously motivated travel have increased steadily, especially in recent years. Despite the huge amount of publications related to tourism and religious pilgrimage, there is still a gap between abstract theory and empirical research. Studies devoted to pilgrimage in the developing countries generally, and Islamic regions in particular are rather few in number in spite of its socio-economic importance and widespread practices. The present work tries to address this relative lack of attention and will shed more light on the tradition of shrine pilgrimage (known as ziyārat) in Turco-Iranian cultural milieu that is almost unknown within the wider community of tourism and geography researchers

    Forms of Pilgrimage at the Shrine of Khāled Nabi, Northeastern Iran

    Pilgrimage (religious tourism) is one of the fastest growing forms of tourism. Nevertheless, there is still a gap between abstract theory and empirical research about this form of tourism in the literature. This dearth of tourism studies is even more glaring in the field of Ziyārat or pilgrimage in Islam which in spite of its importance and wide extended practice have been mostly ignored in tourism and geographic literature. The present study features one such area that is (almost) unknown within the community of tourism and geography researchers. In Iran, religious pilgrimage has a long tradition. Numerous sacred places with varieties of rituals and traditions, which practice among the pilgrims all around the country, indicate on its antiquity (before Islamic periods). Among the most practiced forms of religious pilgrimage are the visits to several thousands of shrines, which are known in Iran as Ziyāratgah (lit. place of visit) or Imāmzādeh. One of these Ziyāratgah is the pre-Islamic shrine of Khāled Nabi (also known as Halat Nabi), which belong to a legendary Christian holy man of the 6th A.D. The shrine lies in the northeastern Iranian province of Golestan, in a region called Turkmen-Sahra. Despite its relative remote setting, every year more than 90,000 travellers do visit this shrine. This article seeks to consider varieties of pilgrimage forms at the shrine. The results of the study shows that the travelers of Khāled Nabi shrine are not homogenous and comprise of different types of visitors. In addition to secular motivations, based on the visitors’ inventives, three zones/forms of pilgrimage, namely, ‘‘religious pilgrims’’, ‘‘cultural pilgrims’’, ‘‘nostalgic pilgrims’’have been recognized

    Experimental and Numerical Study of Octagonal Composite Column Subject to Various Loading

    In this study, experimental tests of the behaviour of steel and partially encased composite (PEC) columns subjected to compressive loading is performed. Evaluation of this type of composite column under axial loading and numerical analysis of its behaviour under combined torsional and axial loading are the main objectives of this study. At first, a parametric study of PEC columns under axial loading was performed in order to find the relationship between flange slenderness ratio of steel column section and concrete confinement. Width-to-thickness ratio of the flange, diameter and spacing of the transverse links were considered as variables in this study. It was observed that dimension of transverse links had almost no effect on the capacity of the specimens, however smaller transverse links spacing increased both capacity and deformability of the specimens. The comparison of the code equations given in CSA S16-14 and EN 1994-1-1 revealed that the equation in CSA S16-14 underestimates the capacity. Furthermore, different types of retrofit of cross-shaped steel column including concrete encasement, use of stiffener plates and transverse links were investigated in this research. Results revealed that concrete confinement and use of transverse links had respectively the most and the least effect on increasing torsional capacity of the specimens

    Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Octagonal Partially Encased Composite Columns Subject to Axial and Torsion Moment Loading

    This paper includes experimental and numerical study of the octagonal partially encased composite (PEC) columns specimens under axial and torsion loading. The major difference between them was the concrete reinforcement details. The parameters investigated in the experimental and numerical study were the type of reinforcement details, the failure mode, width-to-thickness ratio of flange, transverse links spacing and diameter. The results were presented as load-deformation curves. Numerical model was validated using finite element method and the results indicated acceptable accuracy with tests results in the form of capacity and ductility. In the analytical phase, the experimental results in the compressive loading were compared with those obtained from CSA S16-14 and EN 1994-1-1 equations. Also, the new concrete confinement factor in proportion to the web width to thickness ratio was presented to octagonal PEC columns under pure compressive load. Furthermore, different types of retrofit of cross-shaped steel column including concrete encasement, use of stiffener plates and transverse links were investigated in this research. Results revealed that concrete confinement and use of transverse links had respectively the most and the least effect on increasing torsional capacity of the specimens

These travel accounts comprise valuable historical information about the people and their traditions. A literature on travel writings indicate that surprisingly, despite the importance of these recordings, the studies related to the different aspects of these travels, such as the travel routes and the varieties of the possible application of them on the modern time are relatively scarce. The current research deals with the travel routes of nine the most famous early modern European explorers. Accordingly, in addition to digitalizing and mapping the taken routes, the dynamics of their itineraries are analysed

    Evaluation of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Risk in Patients with post Trauma Splenectomy

    Introduction: Recent studies suggest that the spleen has an important role as a source of multipotent stem cells and precursors of beta cells of pancreas islets. In addition, increased risk of developing hyperglycemia was reported in patients who underwent splenectomy due to trauma in long-term follow up. Therefore, there might be an association between splenectomy and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus. In this study, we evaluated the risk of type 2 diabetes and its risk factors including hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, obesity and hypertension in trauma patients with splenectomy. Materials and methods: In this study, 221 patients who underwent splenectomy surgery due to trauma in the surgical ward of Imam Hossein Hospital 5 to 10 years ago were selected. Those with a history of diabetes, cancer, hyperthyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, pancreatitis, renal failure, and cirrhosis were excluded from the study. Then fasting plasma glucose, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), triglyceride, cholesterol and high density lipoprotein (HDL), body mass index and blood pressure have been evaluated in 90 patients who had had a history of splenectomy due to trauma from 2007, July 23 to 2012, July 22. Results: The results indicate that none of these patients has diabetes, 14.4 percent are in pre-diabetic stage, 56.6 percent has dyslipidemia, 57.7 percent has obesity and 20 percent has hypertension. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that splenectomy does not increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Prevalence of diabetes risk factors was approximately the same with those of Tehran population

    The Evaluation of the Effect of Hypothyroidism Treatment on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

    Introduction: There is still controversy over the existence of a relation between hypothyroidism and fatty liver disease. The scale by which hypothyroidism can affect fatty liver disease progression is also to be determined. Therefore, our study aims to contribute in the determination of this relation. Materials and methods: This observational analytical-before and after study with 53 patients was conducted. The subjects were categorized as having either primary or subclinical hypothyroidism. The serum levels of thyroid stimulation hormone (TSH), free T3 (FT3), free T4 (FT4), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were measured and liver ultrasound was done to screen nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Results: The study consisted of 41 women and 12 men with the mean age of 48.3 years. The mean TSH levels decreased after hypothyroidism treatment in patients. The mean levels of FT4 did not have a significant increase after treatment, although in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism this increase was significant. T3 levels increased significantly after treatment. Statistical studies showed that there was a significant change in the degree of fatty liver before and after hypothyroidism treatment. Conclusion: There was an explicit relation between hypothyroidism and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease as Hypothyroidism treatment can prevent non-alcoholic fatty liver disease progression

    The Effect of Thyroid Hormone Replacement on the Metabolic Control and Insulin Resistance in Patients with Subclinical Hypothyroidism

    Introduction: Studying the treatment effect of subclinical hypothyroidism in decreasing metabolic syndrome risk factors and cardiovascular diseases is necessary and can be helpful to control future disorders. In spite of various studies, the relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism and cardiovascular diseases remain controversial. Studies which consider the effects of subclinical hypothyroidism treatment on metabolic control and insulin resistance have not been done in the Islamic Republic of Iran yet. Materials and methods: In this interventional study, 153 patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (thyroid stimulation hormone (TSH) >5, normal T3 and T4 at least 2 times) were selected from Labbafinejad endocrine clinic. Laboratory tests were performed at 8 a.m. after 12-14 hours fasting. Patients were then treated with levothyroxine (25-50 µg daily). To adjust the dose, thyroid function tests (TFT) were checked every 2 months for 6 months. Collected data was used for analysis by spss18 software. Results: After 6 months treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism mean values improved in factors such as insulin resistance profile (fasting blood sugar (FBS), 2 hours post prandial (2hPP), fasting insulin and homeostasis model assessment estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR index), lipid profile (total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and high density lipoprotein (HDL), decreased c-reactive protein (CRP) and weight (all had P value<0.05). Treatment did not have significant effect on triglycerides (TG), waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), uric acid ad systolic/diastolic blood pressure (p values>0.05). But the number of cases with high systolic/diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly after 6 months treatment (P values=0.007 and 0.01). Conclusion: Subclinical hypothyroidism treatment is suggested according to mentioned effects, especially in cases with insulin resistance, lipid profile disturbance, obesity, and high blood pressure

    Comparison of geotube and stone cemented wall stability as coastal protection system [case study and 2D limit equilibrium and FEM modeling analysis]

    Geosynthetic structures for shore protection have demonstrably lower construction and lifetime costs than those of hard structures. This paper outlines the effect of scouring on banks protection structures stability in case of comparison between sand-stone wall and a geosynthetic structure that is commonly used for shore protection: geotextile wraparound revetments (GWRs). Different 2D Limit Equilibrium and FEM modeling analysis were carried out on a case study of sandstone example. As a result, GWRs have been shown to adapt extremely well against differential settlement and scour erosion. Analyses show that many advantages of sand-stone structures remain, but that geosynthetic structures should not be regarded as an alternative shore construction method. Rather, they are a preferable solution for numerous coastal problems
