Satellite Relay Telemetry of Seismic Data in Earthquake Prediction and Control
The Satellite Telemetry Earthquake Monitoring Program was started to evaluate the applicability of satellite relay telemetry in the collection of seismic data from a large number of dense seismograph clusters laid out along the major fault systems of western North America. Prototype clusters utilizing phone-line telemetry were then being installed by the National Center for Earthquake Research in 3 regions along the San Andreas fault in central California; and the experience of installing and operating the clusters and in reducing and analyzing the seismic data from them was to provide the raw materials for evaluation in the satellite relay telemetry project. The principal advantages of the satellite relay system over commercial telephone or microwave systems were: (1) it could be made less prone to massive failure during a major earthquake; (2) it could be extended readily into undeveloped regions; and (3) it could provide flexible, uniform communications over large sections of major global tectonic zones. Fundamental characteristics of a communications system to cope with the large volume of raw data collected by a short-period seismograph network are discussed
Spurious Eccentricities of Distorted Binary Components
I discuss the effect of physical distortion on the velocities of close binary
components and how we may use the resulting distortion of velocity curves to
constrain some properties of binary systems, such as inclination and mass
ratio. Precise new velocities for 5 Cet convincingly detect these distortions
with their theoretically predicted phase dependence. We can even use such
distortions of velocity curves to test Lucy's theory of convective gravity
darkening. The observed distortions for TT Hya and 5 Cet require the contact
components of those systems to be gravity darkened, probably somewhat more than
predicted by Lucy's theory but clearly not as much as expected for a radiative
star. These results imply there is no credible evidence for eccentric orbits in
binaries with contact components. I also present some speculative analyses of
the observed properties of a binary encased in a non-rotating common envelope,
if such an object could actually exist, and discuss how the limb darkening of
some recently calculated model atmospheres for giant stars may bias my resuts
for velocity-curve distortions, as well as other results from a wide range of
analyses of binary stars.Comment: 14 pp, 2 tables, 12 fig; under review by Ap
The 1979 Southeastern Virginia Urban Plume Study (SEV-UPS): Surface and airborne studies
The operation of two surface monitoring stations (one in downtown Norfolk, Virginia, one south of the city near the Great Dismal Swamp) and the collection of 40 hours of airborne measurements is described. Surface site measurements of ozone, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, temperature, dew point, b sub seat, and condensation nuclei were made. Instrument calibrations, quality assurance audits, and preliminary data analysis in support of the Urban Plume Study were also made. The air pollution problems that were addressed are discussed. Data handling procedures followed for the surface stations are presented. The operation of the aircraft sampling platform is described. Aircraft sampling procedures are discussed. A preliminary descriptive analysis of the aircraft data is given along with data or plots for surface sites, airborne studies, hydrocarbon species, and instrument performance audits. Several of the aircraft flights clearly show the presence of an urban ozone plume downwind of Norfolk in the direction of the mean wind flow
In situ sensors for measurements in the global trosposphere
Current techniques available for the in situ measurement of ambient trace gas species, particulate composition, and particulate size distribution are reviewed. The operational specifications of the various techniques are described. Most of the techniques described are those that have been used in airborne applications or show promise of being adaptable to airborne applications. Some of the instruments described are specialty items that are not commercially-available. In situ measurement techniques for several meteorological parameters important in the study of the distribution and transport of ambient air pollutants are discussed. Some remote measurement techniques for meteorological parameters are also discussed. State-of-the-art measurement capabilities are compared with a list of capabilities and specifications desired by NASA for ambient measurements in the global troposphere

UHF Syledis for Coastal Survey Positioning
UHF positioning systems are intermediate between groundwave HF radio aids, such as Argo and Hi-Fix, and line-of-sight systems, such as Mini-Ranger III and Trisponder. The Canadian Hydrographic Service conducted tests along the coast of Nova Scotia in 1982/83 which showed that UHF propagation velocity is unaffected by the terrain that the signal passes over, that UHF Syledis is effective to about 100 km over water and low-lying land, and that low pressure weather systems reduce Syledis performance. This paper will describe test procedures and results, and the subsequent CHS experience with Syledis in the first year of operational use in 1983
Numerical simulations of mixed states quantum computation
We describe quantum-octave package of functions useful for simulations of
quantum algorithms and protocols. Presented package allows to perform
simulations with mixed states. We present numerical implementation of important
quantum mechanical operations - partial trace and partial transpose. Those
operations are used as building blocks of algorithms for analysis of
entanglement and quantum error correction codes. Simulation of Shor's algorithm
is presented as an example of package capabilities.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, presented at Foundations of Quantum Information,

Maximizing nearest neighbour entanglement in finitely correlated qubit--chains
We consider translationally invariant states of an infinite one dimensional
chain of qubits or spin-1/2 particles. We maximize the entanglement shared by
nearest neighbours via a variational approach based on finitely correlated
states. We find an upper bound of nearest neighbour concurrence equal to
C=0.434095 which is 0.09% away from the bound C_W=0.434467 obtained by a
completely different procedure. The obtained state maximizing nearest neighbour
entanglement seems to approximate the maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS).
Further we investigate in detail several other properties of the so obtained
optimal state.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2nd version minor change
The Hudson Bay Lithospheric Experiment (HuBLE) : Insights into Precambrian Plate Tectonics and the Development of Mantle Keels
The UK component of HuBLE was supported by Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) grant NE/F007337/1, with financial and logistical support from the Geological Survey of Canada, Canada–Nunavut Geoscience Office, SEIS-UK (the seismic node of NERC), and First Nations communities of Nunavut. J. Beauchesne and J. Kendall provided invaluable assistance in the field. Discussions with M. St-Onge, T. Skulski, D. Corrigan and M. Sanborne-Barrie were helpful for interpretation of the data. D. Eaton and F. A. Darbyshire acknowledge the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. Four stations on the Belcher Islands and northern Quebec were installed by the University of Western Ontario and funded through a grant to D. Eaton (UWO Academic Development Fund). I. Bastow is funded by the Leverhulme Trust. This is Natural Resources Canada Contribution 20130084 to its Geomapping for Energy and Minerals Program.
