Thirty Years of Turnstiles and Transport
To characterize transport in a deterministic dynamical system is to compute
exit time distributions from regions or transition time distributions between
regions in phase space. This paper surveys the considerable progress on this
problem over the past thirty years. Primary measures of transport for
volume-preserving maps include the exiting and incoming fluxes to a region. For
area-preserving maps, transport is impeded by curves formed from invariant
manifolds that form partial barriers, e.g., stable and unstable manifolds
bounding a resonance zone or cantori, the remnants of destroyed invariant tori.
When the map is exact volume preserving, a Lagrangian differential form can be
used to reduce the computation of fluxes to finding a difference between the
action of certain key orbits, such as homoclinic orbits to a saddle or to a
cantorus. Given a partition of phase space into regions bounded by partial
barriers, a Markov tree model of transport explains key observations, such as
the algebraic decay of exit and recurrence distributions.Comment: Updated and corrected versio
Heteroclinic intersections between Invariant Circles of Volume-Preserving Maps
We develop a Melnikov method for volume-preserving maps with codimension one
invariant manifolds. The Melnikov function is shown to be related to the flux
of the perturbation through the unperturbed invariant surface. As an example,
we compute the Melnikov function for a perturbation of a three-dimensional map
that has a heteroclinic connection between a pair of invariant circles. The

Resonance Zones and Lobe Volumes for Volume-Preserving Maps
We study exact, volume-preserving diffeomorphisms that have heteroclinic
connections between a pair of normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds. We
develop a general theory of lobes, showing that the lobe volume is given by an
integral of a generating form over the primary intersection, a subset of the
heteroclinic orbits. Our definition reproduces the classical action formula in
the planar, twist map case. For perturbations from a heteroclinic connection,
the lobe volume is shown to reduce, to lowest order, to a suitable integral of

Structure and Metal Binding Properties of ZnuA, a Periplasmic Zinc Transporter from \u3cem\u3eEscherichia coli\u3c/em\u3e
ZnuA is the periplasmic Zn2+-binding protein associated with the high-affinity ATP-binding cassette ZnuABC transporter from Escherichia coli. Although several structures of ZnuA and its homologs have been determined, details regarding metal ion stoichiometry, affinity, and specificity as well as the mechanism of metal uptake and transfer remain unclear. The crystal structures of E. coli ZnuA (Eco-ZnuA) in the apo, Zn2+-bound, and Co2+-bound forms have been determined. ZnZnuA binds at least two metal ions. The first, observed previously in other structures, is coordinated tetrahedrally by Glu59, His60, His143, and His207. Replacement of Zn2+ with Co2+ results in almost identical coordination geometry at this site. The second metal binding site involves His224 and several yet to be identified residues from the His-rich loop that is unique to Zn2+ periplasmic metal binding receptors. Electron paramagnetic resonance and X-ray absorption spectroscopic data on CoZnuA provide additional insight into possible residues involved in this second site. The second site is also detected by metal analysis and circular dichroism (CD) titrations. Eco-ZnuA binds Zn2+ (estimated K d \u3c 20 nM), Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Cu+, and Cd2+, but not Mn2+. Finally, conformational changes upon metal binding observed in the crystal structures together with fluorescence and CD data indicate that only Zn2+ substantially stabilizes ZnuA and might facilitate recognition of ZnuB and subsequent metal transfer
Canonical Melnikov theory for diffeomorphisms
We study perturbations of diffeomorphisms that have a saddle connection
between a pair of normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds. We develop a
first-order deformation calculus for invariant manifolds and show that a
generalized Melnikov function or Melnikov displacement can be written in a
canonical way. This function is defined to be a section of the normal bundle of
the saddle connection.
We show how our definition reproduces the classical methods of Poincar\'{e}
and Melnikov and specializes to methods previously used for exact symplectic
and volume-preserving maps. We use the method to detect the transverse
intersection of stable and unstable manifolds and relate this intersection to

Development of guidance on applications of regulatory requirements for regulating large, contaminated equipment and large decommissioning and decontamination (D and D) components
In 1985, the International Atomic Energy Agency issued revised regulations for the safe transport of radioactive material. Significant were major changes to requirements for Low Specific Activity material and Surface Contaminated Objects. As these requirements were adopted into regulations in the US, it was recognized that guidance on how to apply these requirements to large, contaminated/activated pieces of equipment and decommissioning and decontamination objects would be needed both by the regulators and those regulated to clarify technical uncertainties and ensure implementation. Thus, the US Department of Transportation and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, with assistance of staff from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, are preparing regulatory guidance which will present examples of acceptable methods for demonstrating compliance with the revised rules for large items. Concepts being investigated for inclusion in the pending guidance are discussed in this paper. Under current plans, the guidance will be issued for public comment before final issuance in 1997

Legitimacy in conflict: concepts, practices, challenges
The study of legitimacy in situations of conflict and peacebuilding has increased in recent years. However, current work on the topic adopts many assumptions, definitions, and understandings from classical legitimacy theory, which centers on the relationship between the nation-state and its citizens. In this introduction, we provide a detailed critical overview of current theories of legitimacy and legitimation and demonstrate why they have only limited applicability in conflict and post-conflict contexts, focusing on the three main areas that the articles included in this special issue examine: audiences for legitimacy, sources of legitimacy, and legitimation. In particular, we show how conflict and post-conflict contexts are marked by the fragmentation and personalization of power; the proliferation and fragmentation of legitimacy audiences; and ambiguity surrounding legitimation strategies
Influence of melt feeding scheme and casting parameters during direct-chill casting on microstructure of an AA7050 billet
© The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2012Direct-chill (DC) casting billets of an AA7050 alloy produced with different melt feeding schemes and casting speeds were examined in order to reveal the effect of these factors on the evolution of microstructure. Experimental results show that grain size is strongly influenced by the casting speed. In addition, the distribution of grain sizes across the billet diameter is mostly determined by melt feeding scheme. Grains tend to coarsen towards the center of a billet cast with the semi-horizontal melt feeding, while upon vertical melt feeding the minimum grain size was observed in the center of the billet. Computer simulations were preformed to reveal sump profiles and flow patterns during casting under different melt feeding schemes and casting speeds. The results show that solidification front and velocity distribution of the melt in the liquid and slurry zones are very different under different melt feeding scheme. The final grain structure and the grain size distribution in a DC casting billet is a result of a combination of fragmentation effects in the slurry zone and the cooling rate in the solidification range

Quantification of Habitat and Community Relationships among Nearshore Temperate Fishes Through Analysis of Drop Camera Video
Temperate nearshore reefs along the Pacific coast of North America are highly valuable to commercial and recreational fisheries yet comprise a small fraction of the seabed. Monitoring fisheries resources in this region is difficult; high-relief structural complexity and adverse sea conditions have led to a paucity of information on temperate reef species assemblage patterns. Reliable, inexpensive tools and methods for monitoring are needed, as many traditional tools are both logistically complicated and expensive, limiting the frequency of their implementation over a large scale. Video drop cameras of varying designs have previously been employed to estimate fish abundance and distribution. We surveyed a nearshore rocky reef off the northern Oregon coast with a video lander (a video camera mounted on a landing platform so it can be dropped to the seafloor) over the spring and winter of 2011. We designed a 272-point systematic grid to document the species assemblage and the distribution and habitat associations of the reef species, including two overfished rockfishes: Canary Rockfish Sebastes pinniger and Yelloweye Rockfish Sebastes ruberrimus. Species assemblages differed significantly across the reef by depth and by season for the outer part of the reef. Well-defined habitat associations existed for many species; Canary Rockfish were associated with complex moderate-relief habitat types such as large boulders and small boulders, while Yelloweye Rockfish were associated with high-relief habitats like vertical walls. Species associations were evaluated pairwise to identify nearshore complexes. We compared our site with five exploratory reef sites off the central Oregon coast and found that nearshore reefs differed from our site, while offshore reefs were more similar. Video landers provide a solution to the need for increased sampling of temperate reef systems that are subject to difficult conditions and can contribute to habitat mapping, fish abundance indices, and fish assemblage information for monitoring and management of fisheries resources.This is the publisherâs final pdf. Terminal valuations, growth rates and the implied cost of capital
This article is published with open access at Springerlink.comWe develop a model based on the notion that prices lead earnings,
allowing for a simultaneous estimation of the implied growth rate and the cost of
equity capital for US industrial sectors. The major difference between our approach
and that in prior literature is that ours avoids the necessity to make assumptions
about terminal values and consequently about future growth rates. In fact, growth
rates are an endogenous variable, which is estimated simultaneously with the
implied cost of equity capital. Since we require only 1-year-ahead forecasts of
earnings and no assumptions about dividend payouts, our methodology allows us to
estimate ex ante aggregate growth and risk premia over a larger sample of firms than
has previously been possible. Our estimate of the risk premium being between 3.1
and 3.9 % is at the lower end of recent estimates, reflecting the inclusion of these
short-lived companies. Our estimate of the long run growth is from 4.2 to 4.7 %
