Robust Control Design for Large Space Structures
The control design problem for the class of future spacecraft referred to as large space structures (LSS) is by now well known. The issue is the reduced order control of a very high order, lightly damped system with uncertain system parameters, particularly in the high frequency modes. A design methodology which incorporates robustness considerations as part of the design process is presented. Combining pertinent results from multivariable systems theory and optimal control and estimation, LQG eigenstructure assignment and LQG frequency shaping, were used to improve singular value robustness measures in the presence of control and observation spillover

Periodic substorm activity in the geomagnetic tail
On 19 May 1978 an anusual series of events is observed with the Quadrispherical LEPEDEA on board the ISEE-1 satellite in the Earth's geomagnetic tail. For 13 hours periodic bursts of both ions and electrons are seen in all the particle detectors on the spacecraft. On this day periodic activity is also seen on the ground, where multiple intensifications of the electrojets are observed. At the same time the latitudinal component of the interplanetary magnetic field shows a number of strong southward deflections. It is concluded that an extended period of substorm activity is occurring, which causes repeated thinnings and recoveries of the plasma sheet. These are detected by ISEE, which is situated in the plasma sheet boundary layer, as periodic dropouts and reappearances of the plasma. Comparisons of the observations at ISEE with those at IMP-8, which for a time is engulfed by the plasma sheet, indicate that the activity is relatively localized in spatial extent. For this series of events it is clear that a global approach to magnetospheric dynamics, e.g., reconnection, is inappropriate
Transit Analysis Package (TAP and autoKep): IDL Graphical User Interfaces for Extrasolar Planet Transit Photometry
We present an IDL graphical user interface-driven software package designed
for the analysis of extrasolar planet transit light curves. The Transit
Analysis Package (TAP) software uses Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques
to fit light curves using the analytic model of Mandel and Agol (2002). The
package incorporates a wavelet based likelihood function developed by Carter
and Winn (2009) which allows the MCMC to assess parameter uncertainties more
robustly than classic chi-squared methods by parameterizing uncorrelated
"white" and correlated "red" noise. The software is able to simultaneously
analyze multiple transits observed in different conditions (instrument, filter,
weather, etc). The graphical interface allows for the simple execution and
interpretation of Bayesian MCMC analysis tailored to a user's specific data set
and has been thoroughly tested on ground-based and Kepler photometry. AutoKep
provides a similar GUI for the preparation of Kepler MAST archive data for
analysis by TAP or any other analysis software. This paper describes the

Tempo and mode of performance evolution across multiple independent origins of adhesive toe pads in lizards
Understanding macroevolutionary dynamics of trait evolution is an important endeavor in evolutionary biology. Ecological opportunity can liberate a trait as it diversifies through trait space, while genetic and selective constraints can limit diversification. While many studies have examined the dynamics of morphological traits, diverse morphological traits may yield the same or similar performance and as performance is often more proximately the target of selection, examining only morphology may give an incomplete understanding of evolutionary dynamics. Here, we ask whether convergent evolution of padâbearing lizards has followed similar evolutionary dynamics, or whether independent origins are accompanied by unique constraints and selective pressures over macroevolutionary time. We hypothesized that geckos and anoles each have unique evolutionary tempos and modes. Using performance data from 59 species, we modified Brownian motion (BM) and OrnsteinâUhlenbeck (OU) models to account for repeated origins estimated using Bayesian ancestral state reconstructions. We discovered that adhesive performance in geckos evolved in a fashion consistent with Brownian motion with a trend, whereas anoles evolved in bounded performance space consistent with more constrained evolution (an OrnsteinâUhlenbeck model). Our results suggest that convergent phenotypes can have quite distinctive evolutionary patterns, likely as a result of idiosyncratic constraints or ecological opportunities
The Revolution in Astronomy Education: Data Science for the Masses
As our capacity to study ever-expanding domains of our science has increased
(including the time domain, non-electromagnetic phenomena, magnetized plasmas,
and numerous sky surveys in multiple wavebands with broad spatial coverage and
unprecedented depths), so have the horizons of our understanding of the
Universe been similarly expanding. This expansion is coupled to the exponential
data deluge from multiple sky surveys, which have grown from gigabytes into
terabytes during the past decade, and will grow from terabytes into Petabytes
(even hundreds of Petabytes) in the next decade. With this increased vastness
of information, there is a growing gap between our awareness of that
information and our understanding of it. Training the next generation in the
fine art of deriving intelligent understanding from data is needed for the
success of sciences, communities, projects, agencies, businesses, and
economies. This is true for both specialists (scientists) and non-specialists
(everyone else: the public, educators and students, workforce). Specialists
must learn and apply new data science research techniques in order to advance
our understanding of the Universe. Non-specialists require information literacy
skills as productive members of the 21st century workforce, integrating
foundational skills for lifelong learning in a world increasingly dominated by
data. We address the impact of the emerging discipline of data science on
astronomy education within two contexts: formal education and lifelong

Managing digital coordination of design: emerging hybrid practices in an institutionalized project setting
What happens when digital coordination practices are introduced into the institutionalized setting of an engineering project? This question is addressed through an interpretive study that examines how a shared digital model becomes used in the late design stages of a major station refurbishment project. The paper contributes by mobilizing the idea of âhybrid practicesâ to understand the diverse patterns of activity that emerge to manage digital coordination of design. It articulates how engineering and architecture professions develop different relationships with the shared model; the design team negotiates paper-based practices across organizational boundaries; and diverse practitioners probe the potential and limitations of the digital infrastructure. While different software packages and tools have become linked together into an integrated digital infrastructure, these emerging hybrid practices contrast with the interactions anticipated in practice and policy guidance and presenting new opportunities and challenges for managing project delivery. The study has implications for researchers working in the growing field of empirical work on engineering project organizations as it shows the importance of considering, and suggests new ways to theorise, the introduction of digital coordination practices into these institutionalized settings
