AIDS, ACT UP, and Activism Within The Albany Community
This research, completed in the senior-history capstone course, follows a feminist LGBTQ+ activist local to Albany, NY. Her and fellow activists worked during the 1980âs and 1990âs to provide awareness and resources following the outbreak of the AIDS crisis. I examined the Albany communityâs (and the national governmentâs) response to the rise in LGBTQ+ violence and hate-crime cases. I also examined how activists were working to address the lack of serious response on behalf of local/national government, and the solutions they offered to Albanyâs community. Therefore, my project is essentially an assessment of the work done by activists such as Michelle Crone. I aimed to honor their contribution to LGBTQ+ safety, protection, and equality
Fauna of the Pilgrim Formation of the South Boulder Creek Area in Southwestern Montana
This paper, a study of the fauna of the Pilgrim formation at South Boulder Creek in southwestern Montana, represents a laboratory study of the fossil specimens collected by Dr. Alvin Hanson during the summer of 1949. The scope of investigation includes identification and classification of the faunas, their stratigraphic relationship and zonal subdivisions
The reactivity of some organophosphorus esters
Part 1: The occurrence of bimolecular nucleophilic aromatic substitution has been established in the reaction of o-dinitrobenzene with triethyl phosphite and diethyl methylphosphonite in acetonitrile solution. There is a fine balance between the customary deoxygenation and nucleophilic substitution of aromatic nitrocompounds. The role of the o-nitro group in facilitating the nucleophilic substitution has been discussed in terms of "built-in solvation" of the reaction centres. The exclusive formation of ethyl nitrite in the reactions has been shown to be compatible with the dealkylation of a quasi-phosphonium intermediate by nitrite ions.
Part 2: A series of alkyl a-hydroxyimino-p-nitrobenzyl alkylphophyl adducts have been synthesised from phosphorus-containing acids and p-nitrobenzonitrile oxide. Their solvolytic behaviour has been examined. Hydrolysis occurred in acid solution at 25°with anchimeric assistance of about 2x10ⷠby the neighbouring oximino group, to yield the alcohol of the ester moiety. Exclusive phosphorus-oxygen fission occurred. P-Nitroaniline was formed in alkaline solution by intramolecular attack by the oximate anion, followed by a Lossen rearrangement. Evidence is presented for the intermediary of pentacovalent intermediates, and the relative reactivities of the adducts are explained by the constraints necessary for pseudo-rotation to allow further reaction to form the products in alkaline solution. The acid hydrolysis of ethyl pinacolyl methylphosphonate was shown to proceed via a unimolecular mechanism with the formation of a carbonium ion in 50% aqueous dioxin at 100
âIf it is a tear let it be a tear, not a lacerationâ : form J88 as evidence in prosecution of violence against women in South Africa
The availability of the J88 form in court is believed to convey the precise clinical description of
the womanâs injuries as it is seen as prima facie evidence. This article reports how the J88 form
is used in prosecution of violence against women (VAW). A four-phased sensory ethnographic
design that used courtscapes, participantsâ observation, document analysis and conversations
with prosecutors and court personnel to generate data was employed. In this paper the focus will
be on findings from conversations and reviews of relevant documents. The findings indicate that,
regardless of J88 being legally endorsed as prima facie and standalone evidence, some trials of
VAW cases continue without it. Most importantly, J88 forms presented for evidence are usually
âsilentâ as they donât have any impact on prosecution of VAW. In some VAW cases, the J88 forms
are viewed as recall for a victimâs condition. We recommend a synergistic approach that is transdisciplinary
in nature in documentation of J88 forms. Such documentation will advance the legal
and health practices.http://www.ajol.info/index.php/asp/indexhttp://www.unisa.ac.za/Default.asp?Cmd=ViewContent&ContentID=25985am2016Nursing Scienc
The moderating influences on the relationship of corporate reputation with its antecedents and consequences: a meta-analytic review
Through a meta-analytical approach, we test the antecedents and consequences of corporate reputation, examining specifically the moderating roles of three study variables: country of study, stakeholder group, and reputational measure. The study presents a comprehensive overviewof threemoderating factors for the relationship of corporate reputation with its antecedents and consequences in the literature from 101 quantitative studies. Our findings suggest that practitioners need to exercise considerable caution when developing and managing the reputation of their organizations through the use of research evidence from various countries, with different stakeholder groups and when employing diverse reputational measures
Russian roulette with unlicensed fat-burner drug 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) : evidence from a multidisciplinary study of the internet, bodybuilding supplements and DNP users
BACKGROUND:
2,4-Dinitrophenol (DNP) poses serious health-risks to humans. The aims of this three-stage multidisciplinary project were, for the first time, to assess the risks to the general public from fraudulent sale of or adulteration/contamination with DNP; and to investigate motives, reasons and risk-management among DNP-user bodybuilders and avid exercisers.
METHODS:
Using multiple search-engines and guidance for Internet research, online retailers and bodybuilding forums/blogs were systematically explored for availability of DNP, advice offered on DNP use and user profiles. Ninety-eight pre-workout and weight-loss supplements were purchased and analysed for DNP using liquid-chromatography-mass-spectrometry. Psychosocial variables were captured in an international sample of 35 DNP users (26.06 ± 6.10 years, 94.3 % male) with an anonymous, semi-qualitative self-reported survey.
RESULTS:
Although an industrial chemical, evidence from the Internet showed that DNP is sold 'as is', in capsules or tablets to suit human consumption, and is used 'uncut'. Analytical results confirmed that DNP is not on the supplement market disguised under fictitious supplement names, but infrequently was present as contaminant in some supplements (14/98) at low concentration (<100mcg/kg). Users make conscious and 'informed' decisions about DNP; are well-prepared for the side-effects and show nonchalant attitude toward self-experimentation with DNP. Steps are often taken to ensure that DNP is genuine. Personal experience with performance- and appearance enhancing substances appears to be a gateway to DNP. Advice on DNP and experiences are shared online. The significant discrepancy between the normative perception and the actual visibility suggests that DNP use is-contrary to the Internet accounts-a highly concealed and lonesome activity in real life. Positive experiences with the expected weight-loss prevail over the negative experiences from side effects (all but two users considered using DNP again) and help with using DNP safely is considered preferable over scare-tactics.
CONCLUSION:
Legislation banning DNP sale for human consumption protects the general public but DNP is sold 'as is' and used 'uncut' by determined users who are not dissuaded from experimenting with DNP based on health threats. Further research with stakeholders' active participation is imperative for targeted, proactive public health policies and harm-reduction measures for DNP, and other illicit supplements
E-commerce ethics and its impact on buyer repurchase intentions and loyalty: an empirical study of small and medium Egyptian businesses
The theoretical understanding of e-commerce has received much attention over the years; however, relatively little focus has been directed towards e-commerce ethics, especially the SMEs B2B e-commerce aspect. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to develop and empirically test a framework that explains the impact of SMEs B2B e-commerce ethics on buyer repurchase intentions and loyalty. Using SEM to analyse the data collected from a sample of SME e-commerce firms in Egypt, the results indicate that buyersâ perceptions of supplier ethics construct is composed of six dimensions (security, non-deception, fulfilment/reliability, service recovery, shared value, and communication) and strongly predictive of online buyer repurchase intentions and loyalty. Furthermore, our results also show that reliability/fulfilment and non-deception are the most effective relationship-building dimensions. In addition, relationship quality has a positive effect on buyer repurchase intentions and loyalty. The results offer important implications for B2B e-commerce and are likely to stimulate further research in the area of relationship marketing
Inovatividade, envolvimento, atitude e experiĂȘncia na adoção da compra on-line
This work seeks to analyze the inter-relationships that exist between innovation, involvement and attitude in the decomposed model of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), as applied in social psychology, and experience of using the Internet in the process of buyingon-line. An integrative model was prepared that made it possible to explain the relationship that exists between these factors and purchasing from the Internet. A field survey was undertaken with a non-probabilistic sample of students. A multivariate structural equation modeling method was used and applied by the Partial Least Squares (PLS) technique for checking, explaining and comparing the relationship between the constructs. The results show that intention to buy via the Internet is directly influenced by attitude and innovativeness, and attitude is influenced by involvement. No relationship was found between experience in using the Internet and buying from i
