    An application of the Rasch model to reading comprehension measurement

    An effective reading comprehension measurement demands robust psychometric tools that allow teachers and researchers to evaluate the educational practices and track changes in students’ performance. In this study, we illustrate how Rasch model can be used to attend such demands and improve reading comprehension measurement. We discuss the construction of two reading comprehension tests: TRC-n, with narrative texts, and TRC-e, with expository texts. Three vertically scaled forms were generated for each test (TRC-n-2, TRC-n-3, TRC-n-4; TRC-e-2, TRC-e-3 and TRC-e-4), each meant to assess Portuguese students in second, third and fourth grade of elementary school. The tests were constructed according to a nonequivalent groups with anchor test design and data were analyzed using the Rasch model. The results provided evidence for good psychometric qualities for each test form, including unidimensionality and local independence and adequate reliability.     Influence of antenatal glucocorticoid on preterm lamb diaphragm

    BackgroundPregnant women at a high risk of preterm delivery receive glucocorticoids to accelerate fetal lung maturation and surfactant synthesis. However, the effect of antenatal steroids on the developing diaphragm remains unclear. We hypothesized that maternal betamethasone impairs the fetal diaphragm, and the magnitude of the detrimental effect increases with longer duration of exposure. We aimed to determine how different durations of fetal exposure to maternal betamethasone treatment influence the fetal diaphragm at the functional and molecular levels.MethodsDate-mated merino ewes received intramuscular injections of saline (control) or two doses of betamethasone (5.7 mg) at an interval of 24 h commencing either 2 or 14 days before delivery. Preterm lambs were killed after cesarean delivery at 121-day gestational age. In vitro contractile measurements were performed on the right hemidiaphragm, whereas molecular/cellular analyses used the left costal diaphragm.ResultsDifferent durations of fetal exposure to maternal betamethasone had no consistent effect on the protein metabolic pathway, expression of glucocorticoid receptor and its target genes, cellular oxidative status, or contractile properties of the fetal lamb diaphragm.ConclusionThese data suggest that the potential benefits of betamethasone exposure on preterm respiratory function are not compromised by impaired diaphragm function after low-dose maternal intramuscular glucocorticoid exposure

    Designing Socio-Technical Systems: A Multi-team Case Study

    Technical system design processes are typically based on systems engineering vee models where designers move between functional and physical domains as they develop detailed designs of the overall system and its sub-systems and component parts. The movements between the functional and physical domains are informed by the core activities of any design process: synthesis, description, analysis and simulation, and decision-making. However, delivering socio-technical systems design mindsets, such as those needed to design multi-team systems, requires a new branch of systems science that integrates human behavior into system behavior. Design processes built on such a science would allow system designers to compare alternative solutions in terms of their anticipated performance and consider different options with respect to functions carried out by humans and machines. In this chapter we use a systems design process vee model and apply it to a case study that involves the design of a multi-team customer service system. Both the application of the vee model (i.e., the proposed design process) and the results of its application (i.e., the multi-team customer service system) can be regarded as socio-technical systems and are used to illustrate and elaborate on Clegg’s (Appl Ergon 31(5):463–477, 2000) socio-technical principles for system design. On this basis, we provide a practical framework for designing socio-technical systems and identify requirements for developing future methods and tools to support this process

    Best practices for comparing optimization algorithms

    Comparing, or benchmarking, of optimization algorithms is a complicated task that involves many subtle considerations to yield a fair and unbiased evaluation. In this paper, we systematically review the benchmarking process of optimization algorithms, and discuss the challenges of fair comparison. We provide suggestions for each step of the comparison process and highlight the pitfalls to avoid when evaluating the performance of optimization algorithms. We also discuss various methods of reporting the benchmarking results. Finally, some suggestions for future research are presented to improve the current benchmarking process.Comment: Optim Eng (2017

    Primary exposure and effects in non-target animals

    The toxicity of anticoagulant rodenticides to non-target species is one of the root concerns over wide-scale use of these compounds. Compared with the numerous studies documenting secondary exposure in predators, there have been relatively few studies on primary exposure in non-targets. We consider why primary exposure of non-targets occurs, which species are most likely to be exposed, how and why exposure magnitude varies, and whether exposure results in ecologically significant effects. Species groups or trophic guilds most at risk of primary exposure include invertebrates, reptiles, birds and mammals. Relatively little is known about exposure and particularly effects in invertebrates and reptiles although recent studies suggest that anticoagulants may impact invertebrates, presumably through different toxic pathways to those that result in vertebrate toxicity. Amongst higher vertebrates, primary exposure occurs in some bird species but there is little information on extent and importance. There are more studies on non-target mammals and it is granivorous species that are most likely to feed on bait and accumulate residues, as might be predicted given their ecological and trophic similarities to target species. However, studies suggest a surprisingly high degree of exposure in shrews, although it is unclear the extent to which this is primary and/or secondary. Overall, arguably the most striking aspect of primary exposure in mammals is the large-scale variation both in the proportion of animals exposed and the magnitude of residues accumulated. We consider the multiple abiotic and biotic factors that may drive this, including the direct and indirect effects of resistance in target species. In terms of ecologically significant effects, primary exposure clearly does cause acute mortalities in non-target vertebrates and these have been associated with significant population impacts on intensively baited islands where there has been limited or no potential for immigration. Localised population impacts have also been documented in mainland small mammals but most non-targets are likely to be r-selected species. Population declines may therefore be expected to be relatively short-term, provided baiting is episodic, as population numbers can recover through high intrinsic rate of reproduction in survivors, reduced density-dependent mortality, and immigration. However, prolonged or permanent baiting may potentially result in long-term depletion of resident non-target populations that is ameliorated only by immigration; such areas may act as population sinks
