A new, clean catalogue of extragalactic non-nuclear X-ray sources in nearby galaxies
We have created a new, clean catalogue of extragalactic non-nuclear X-ray sources by correlating the 3XMM-DR4 data release of the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue with the Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies and the Catalogue of Neighbouring Galaxies, using an improved version of the method presented in Walton et al. Our catalogue contains 1314 sources, of which 384 are candidate ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). The resulting catalogue improves upon previous catalogues in its handling of spurious detections by taking into account XMM-Newton quality flags. We estimate the contamination of ULXs by background sources to be 24 per cent. We define a 'complete' subsample as those ULXs in galaxies for which the sensitivity limit is below 10 39 erg s -1 and use it to examine the hardness ratio properties between ULX and non-ULX sources, and ULXs in different classes of host galaxy. We find that ULXs have a similar hardness ratio distribution to lower luminosity sources, consistent with previous studies. We also find that ULXs in spiral and elliptical host galaxies have similar distributions to each other independent of host galaxy morphology, however, our results do support previous indications that the population of ULXs is more luminous in star-forming host galaxies than in non-star-forming galaxies. Our catalogue contains further interesting subpopulations for future study, including Eddington Threshold sources and highly variable ULXs. We also examine the highest luminosity (L X > 5 Ă 10 40 erg s -1) ULXs in our catalogue in search of intermediate-mass black hole candidates, and find nine new possible candidates.We gratefully acknowledge support from the Science and Technology Facilities Council (HPE through grant ST/K501979/1, TPR through ST/P000541/1). Topology of six degrees of freedom magnetic bearing
A novel magnetic topology has been designed for a six degrees of freedom, magnetically levitated and driven mirror, to be used in a three dimensional (3D) measurement system based on laser interferometry. The translations of the mirror are to be kept small, whereas the rotations are to be controlled over a large range with a high bandwidth and high accuracy. Finite element modelling (FEM) is used to analyze the proposed topology. For computational load reduction, a 2D FEM model has been derived from the actual 3D topology, which incorporates most of the magnetic subsystems. Simulations show that cross-influence between the actuators is small, that the forces and torques are proportional to the applied currents and that the angle of the rotor is of little influence. This allows the multiple in multiple out system to be regarded as multiple linear single in single out systems. ©2000 American Institute of Physics
DNA content of a functioning chicken kinetochore

In order to understand the three-dimensional structure of the functional kinetochore in vertebrates, we require a complete list and stoichiometry for the protein components of the kinetochore, which can be provided by genetic and proteomic experiments. We also need to know how the chromatin-containing CENP-A, which makes up the structural foundation for the kinetochore, is folded, and how much of that DNA is involved in assembling the kinetochore. In this MS, we demonstrate that functioning metaphase kinetochores in chicken DT40 cells contain roughly 50 kb of DNA, an amount that corresponds extremely closely to the length of chromosomal DNA associated with CENP-A in ChIP-seq experiments. European Antibiotic Awareness Day: a five-year perspective of Europe-wide actions to promote prudent use of antibiotics.

This article is open access.Following the European Union (EU) Council Recommendation on prudent use of antimicrobial agents in human medicine in 2001, and the success of national campaigns, i.e. Belgium and France, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) decided to establish the European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) on 18 November as platform to support national campaigns across Europe. This article provides an overview of EAAD tools, materials, and activities developed during the first five years. It shows that EAAD has been successful due to good cooperation between ECDC and national institutions, strong political and stakeholder support and evidence-based development of campaign materials. EAAD has provided a platform for pre-existing national campaigns and encouraged similar campaigns to develop where neither political support had been secured, nor financial support had been available. As a result, participating countries have continuously expressed strong support for ECDC to continue its work on EAAD. This has been endorsed by a steadily increasing number of countries participating and the growing interest of varied professional and stakeholder organisations. We conclude that EAAD should continue to act as catalyst for discussion and as mechanism to raise awareness of the public and prescribers about prudent use of antibiotics
Detection, evaluation, and management of preoperative anaemia in the elective orthopaedic surgical patient: NATA guidelines
Previously undiagnosed anaemia is common in elective orthopaedic surgical patients and is associated with increased likelihood of blood transfusion and increased perioperative morbidity and mortality. A standardized approach for the detection, evaluation, and management of anaemia in this setting has been identified as an unmet medical need. A multidisciplinary panel of physicians was convened by the Network for Advancement of Transfusion Alternatives (NATA) with the aim of developing practice guidelines for the detection, evaluation, and management of preoperative anaemia in elective orthopaedic surgery. A systematic literature review and critical evaluation of the evidence was performed, and recommendations were formulated according to the method proposed by the Grades of Recommendation Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) Working Group. We recommend that elective orthopaedic surgical patients have a haemoglobin (Hb) level determination 28 days before the scheduled surgical procedure if possible (Grade 1C). We suggest that the patient's target Hb before elective surgery be within the normal range, according to the World Health Organization criteria (Grade 2C). We recommend further laboratory testing to evaluate anaemia for nutritional deficiencies, chronic renal insufficiency, and/or chronic inflammatory disease (Grade 1C). We recommend that nutritional deficiencies be treated (Grade 1C). We suggest that erythropoiesis-stimulating agents be used for anaemic patients in whom nutritional deficiencies have been ruled out, corrected, or both (Grade 2A). Anaemia should be viewed as a serious and treatable medical condition, rather than simply an abnormal laboratory value. Implementation of anaemia management in the elective orthopaedic surgery setting will improve patient outcome
Supersymmetric Electroweak Cosmic Strings
We study the connection between supersymmetry and a topological bound
in a two-Higgs-doublet system with an gauge group. We derive the Bogomol'nyi equations from
supersymmetry considerations showing that they hold provided certain conditions
on the coupling constants, which are a consequence of the huge symmetry of the
theory, are satisfied. Their solutions, which can be interpreted as electroweak
cosmic strings breaking one half of the supersymmetries of the theory, are
studied. Certain interesting limiting cases of our model which have recently
been considered in the literature are finally analyzed.Comment: 20 pages, RevTe
Rheological constitutive equation for model of soft glassy materials
We solve exactly and describe in detail a simplified scalar model for the low
frequency shear rheology of foams, emulsions, slurries, etc. [P. Sollich, F.
Lequeux, P. Hebraud, M.E. Cates, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 2020 (1997)]. The model
attributes similarities in the rheology of such ``soft glassy materials'' to
the shared features of structural disorder and metastability. By focusing on
the dynamics of mesoscopic elements, it retains a generic character.
Interactions are represented by a mean-field noise temperature x, with a glass
transition occurring at x=1 (in appropriate units). The exact solution of the
model takes the form of a constitutive equation relating stress to strain
history, from which all rheological properties can be derived. For the linear
response, we find that both the storage modulus G' and the loss modulus G''
vary with frequency as \omega^{x-1} for 1<x<2, becoming flat near the glass
transition. In the glass phase, aging of the moduli is predicted. The steady
shear flow curves show power law fluid behavior for x<2, with a nonzero yield
stress in the glass phase; the Cox-Merz rule does not hold in this
non-Newtonian regime. Single and double step strains further probe the
nonlinear behavior of the model, which is not well represented by the BKZ
relation. Finally, we consider measurements of G' and G'' at finite strain
amplitude \gamma. Near the glass transition, G'' exhibits a maximum as \gamma
is increased in a strain sweep. Its value can be strongly overestimated due to
nonlinear effects, which can be present even when the stress response is very
nearly harmonic. The largest strain \gamma_c at which measurements still probe

Cryo-electron microscopy of viruses
Thin vitrified layers of unfixed, unstained and unsupported virus suspensions can be prepared for observation by cryo-electron microscopy in easily controlled conditions. The viral particles appear free from the kind of damage caused by dehydration, freezing or adsorption to a support that is encountered in preparing biological samples for conventional electron microscopy. Cryo-electron microscopy of vitrified specimens offers possibilities for high resolution observations that compare favourably with any other electron microscopical method
