Institutionalized Discrimination in the Legal System: A Socio-Historical Approach
Despite many of the social, political, and economic changes of the 1960s, discrimination is still prevalent in the United States. Increasingly, evidence of discrimination can be seen in our nation\u27s courts, institutions of higher education, in public policy decisions, and every social, political and economic institution. The question of how this can be in these days of ethnic and cultural diversity has aroused considerable interest among social scientists, as well as among the general public. One area that has been the target of considerable research is the criminal justice system. Wilbanks[1] has suggested that it is a myth that the criminal justice system is racist and discriminates against blacks and other minorities. This paper argues to the contrary. It is suggested that Wilbanks has inappropriately applied a microlevel analysis to a macrolevel phenomenon. Examining the historical-structural nature of the legal systems points to great disparities in the status quo of US jurisprudence
A Panel of Price Indices for Housing, Other Goods, and All Goods for All Areas in the United States 1982-2008
This paper produces a panel of price indices for housing, other produced goods, and all produced goods for each metropolitan area in the United States and the non-metropolitan part of each state from 1982 through 2008 that can be used for estimating behavioral relationships, studying the workings of markets, and assessing differences in the economic circumstances of people living in different areas. Our general approach is to first produce cross-sectional price indices for a single year 2000 and then use BLS time-series price indices to create the panel. Our geographic housing price index for 2000 is based on a large data set with detailed information about the characteristics of dwelling units and their neighborhoods throughout the United States that enables us to overcome many shortcomings of existing interarea housing price indices. For most areas, our price index for all goods other than housing is calculated from the price indices for categories of non-housing goods produced each quarter by the Council for Community and Economic Research. In order to produce a non-housing price index for areas of the United States not covered by their index, we estimate a theoretically-based regression model explaining differences in the composite price index for non-housing goods for areas where it is available and use it to predict a price of other goods for the uncovered areas. The overall consumer price index for all areas is based on the preceding estimates of the price of housing and other goods. The paper also discusses existing interarea price indices available to researchers, and it compares the new housing price index with housing price indices based on alternative methods using the same data and price indices based on alternative data sets. Electronic versions of the price indices are available online.Interarea price indices, interarea housing price indices, geographic cost-of-living differences, geographic price differences
Tumpuroo as A Local Community Health Worker to Support for Family with Children Under Five
Background: Every year, an estimated 11 million children in developing countries die before they reach their fifth birthday. Mortality of children under the age of five remains one of the most important public health challenges in developing countries. In rural settings, the promotion of household and community health practices through community health workers (CHWs) is among the key strategies to improve child health. This study aimed to describe “tumpuroo” as a local community health worker to support for family with children under five.
Subjects and Method: A qualitative study carried out in Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park, Bombana, Sulawesi Tenggara. Key informants were selected, including custom figure (tumpuroo), government officers, and a representative from the National Coordinating Board of Family Planning (BKKBN). The study theme was “tumpuroo” as a local community health worker to support for family with children under five. The data were collected by observation and in-depth interview.
Results: BKKBN had an ideal parenting model, namely Bina Keluarga Balita (BKB). But its implementation was not optimal. The program did not reach population in the remote inland areas such as Tobu Hukaea Laeya. Tumpuroo as an element within the traditional structure took its role as a local community health worker in the BKB program. The way tumpuroo delivered health education was unique by singing a lyric, namely “mo’odulele”.
Conclusion: Tumpuroo has an important role in the remote inland community, which can be capitalized to help deliver health promotion and education to improve population health.
Keywords: Tumpuroo, inland community, health promotion, education, parenting, children
Hubungan Antara Pengasuhan Islami Dengan Identitas Diri Pada Remaja Di Kota YOGYAKARTA
This research was aimed to determining the relationship between Islamic adolescent rearing practices with self identity and the different self identity between boys and girls. Several hypothesis were set as follow was : (1) there is a relationship between Islamic adolescent rearing practices with self identity, (2) there is a difference between boys and girls in terms of self identity. The subject involved 200 adolescent ; 110 boys and 90 girls, using purposive random sampling. The data were obtained by using Islamic adolescent rearing ractices scale (SPI) and self identity scale (SID). Data analysis used product moment and t-test.The first hypothesis was analysis using product moment. The result shows that Islamic adolescent rearing practices influenced self identity (r=0,549 ; =0,000). The second analysis showed that there was not a significant differences of self identity between boys and girls (t=-0,497 ; p=0,620), although mean value self identity of girls (210,25) was higher than boys (208,26)
Space-based geoengineering: challenges and requirements
The prospect of engineering the Earth's climate (geoengineering) raises a multitude of issues associated with climatology, engineering on macroscopic scales, and indeed the ethics of such ventures. Depending on personal views, such large-scale engineering is either an obvious necessity for the deep future, or yet another example of human conceit. In this article a simple climate model will be used to estimate requirements for engineering the Earth's climate, principally using space-based geoengineering. Active cooling of the climate to mitigate anthropogenic climate change due to a doubling of the carbon dioxide concentration in the Earth's atmosphere is considered. This representative scenario will allow the scale of the engineering challenge to be determined. It will be argued that simple occulting discs at the interior Lagrange point may represent a less complex solution than concepts for highly engineered refracting discs proposed recently. While engineering on macroscopic scales can appear formidable, emerging capabilities may allow such ventures to be seriously considered in the long term. This article is not an exhaustive review of geoengineering, but aims to provide a foretaste of the future opportunities, challenges, and requirements for space-based geoengineering ventures
