Rotorcraft convertible engine study
The objective of the Rotorcraft Convertible Engine Study was to define future research and technology effort required for commercial development by 1988 of convertible fan/shaft gas turbine engines for unconventional rotorcraft transports. Two rotorcraft and their respective missions were defined: a Fold Tilt Rotor aircraft and an Advancing Blade Concept (ABC) rotorcraft. Sensitivity studies were conducted with these rotorcraft to determine parametrically the influence of propulsion characteristics on aircraft size, mission fuel requirements, and direct operating costs (DOC). The two rotorcraft were flown with conventional propulsion systems (separate lift/cruise engines) and with convertible propulsion systems to determine the benefits to be derived from convertible engines. Trade-off studies were conducted to determine the optimum engine cycle and staging arrangement for a convertible engine. Advanced technology options applicable to convertible engines were studied. Propulsion Study for Small Transport Aircraft Technology (STAT)
Propulsion requirements were determined for 0.5 and 0.7 Mach aircraft. Sensitivity studies were conducted on both these aircraft to determine parametrically the influence of propulsion characteristics on aircraft size and direct operating cost (DOC). Candidate technology elements and design features were identified and parametric studies conducted to select the STAT advanced engine cycle. Trade off studies were conducted to determine those advanced technologies and design features that would offer a reduction in DOC for operation of the STAT engines. These features were incorporated in the two STAT engines. A benefit assessment was conducted comparing the STAT engines to current technology engines of the same power and to 1985 derivatives of the current technology engines. Research and development programs were recommended as part of an overall technology development plan to ensure that full commercial development of the STAT engines could be initiated in 1988

Feminism, Abortion and Disability: irreconcilable differences?
There has been considerable discussion of the political allegiance between the feminist and disability movements, but the question of abortion remains a thorny one. Disability rights advocates have been keen to demonstrate that it is possible to believe in a woman's right to sovereignty over the body and, yet, be opposed to the selective abortion of an impaired foetus – describing the latter as a form of 'weak' eugenics.
The aim of this paper is to show that whilst there may be some points of agreement between the feminist and disability movements on the question of abortion, there exist fundamental and irreconcilable differences

Aging in a topological spin glass
We have examined the nonconventional spin glass phase of the 2-dimensional
kagome antiferromagnet (H_3 O) Fe_3 (SO_4)_2 (OH)_6 by means of ac and dc
magnetic measurements. The frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility peak
is characteristic of a critical slowing down at Tg ~ 18K. At fixed temperature
below Tg, aging effects are found which obey the same scaling law as in spin
glasses or polymers. However, in clear contrast with conventional spin glasses,
aging is remarkably insensitive to temperature changes. This particular type of
dynamics is discussed in relation with theoretical predictions for highly
frustrated non-disordered systems.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Measurement of the Positive Muon Lifetime and Determination of the Fermi Constant to Part-per-Million Precision
We report a measurement of the positive muon lifetime to a precision of 1.0
parts per million (ppm); it is the most precise particle lifetime ever
measured. The experiment used a time-structured, low-energy muon beam and a
segmented plastic scintillator array to record more than 2 x 10^{12} decays.
Two different stopping target configurations were employed in independent
data-taking periods. The combined results give tau_{mu^+}(MuLan) =
2196980.3(2.2) ps, more than 15 times as precise as any previous experiment.
The muon lifetime gives the most precise value for the Fermi constant:
G_F(MuLan) = 1.1663788 (7) x 10^-5 GeV^-2 (0.6 ppm). It is also used to extract
the mu^-p singlet capture rate, which determines the proton's weak induced

Detection of an ultra-bright submillimeter galaxy in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field using AzTEC/ASTE
We report the detection of an extremely bright (37 mJy at 1100 m
and 91 mJy at 880 m) submillimeter galaxy (SMG),
AzTEC-ASTE-SXDF1100.001 (hereafter referred to as SXDF1100.001 or Orochi),
discovered in 1100 m observations of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field
using AzTEC on ASTE. Subsequent CARMA 1300 m and SMA 880 m
observations successfully pinpoint the location of Orochi and suggest that it
has two components, one extended (FWHM of 4) and one
compact (unresolved). Z-Spec on CSO has also been used to obtain a wide band
spectrum from 190 to 308 GHz, although no significant emission/absorption lines
are found. The derived upper limit to the line-to-continuum flux ratio is
0.1--0.3 (2 ) across the Z-Spec band.
Based on the analysis of the derived spectral energy distribution from
optical to radio wavelengths of possible counterparts near the SMA/CARMA peak
position, we suggest that Orochi is a lensed, optically dark SMG lying at behind a foreground, optically visible (but red) galaxy at . The deduced apparent (i.e., no correction for magnification) infrared
luminosity () and star formation rate (SFR) are
and 11000 yr, respectively, assuming that the
is dominated by star formation. These values suggest that Orochi
will consume its gas reservoir within a short time scale (
yr), which is indeed comparable to those in extreme starbursts like the centres
