    Adaptive high-order finite element solution of transient elastohydrodynamic lubrication problems

    This article presents a new numerical method to solve transient line contact elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) problems. A high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method is used for the spatial discretization, and the standard Crank-Nicolson method is employed to approximate the time derivative. An h-adaptivity method is used for grid adaptation with the time-stepping, and the penalty method is employed to handle the cavitation condition. The roughness model employed here is a simple indentation, which is located on the upper surface. Numerical results are presented comparing the DG method to standard finite difference (FD) techniques. It is shown that micro-EHL features are captured with far fewer degrees of freedom than when using low-order FD methods

    Haematological and serum biochemical indices of male wistar albino rats fed raw and processed monkey cola (Cola rostrata) seed meal

    This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of feeding processed and raw Cola rostrata seed meal (CRSM) on the haematological and serum biochemical indices of some organs (liver, kidney, duodenum, jejunum and ileum) of male wistar albino rats. Cola rostrata seed was processed using different methods; boiling, boiling/fermenting, fermenting, and toasting to eliminate the anti-nutritional factors in it. Six (6) experimental diets were formulated with diet 1 (Control) containing 0% CRSM, while diets 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 contained boiled, boiled/ fermented, fermented, toasted and raw CRSM respectively. Sixty (60) weanling male rats aged 6-7 weeks, were randomly divided into the six (6) dietary treatments groups, which were replicated twice with five (5) rats per replicate in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The experiment lasted for 21 days. The results indicated that there were significant differences (P<0.05) in packed cell volume (PCV) and Haemoglobin among the treatment groups. The raw seed (diet 6) resulted in the reduction of the serum total protein, serum albumin and serum globulin. It is concluded that Cola rostrata seed boiled for 30 minutes can be used as feed ingredient in replacing maize in animal diets without adverse effects on haematological and serum biochemical indices studied.     This report is a user guide for the Biosphere Isotope Domains GB (V1) dataset, which includes (1) a GIS layer for strontium, sulphur and oxygen isotopes (2) datasets of strontium and sulphur isotope measurements from samples across the Great Britain - published separately and available via BGS and (3) a web portal for viewing and querying the data. A description of the data, methodology and assumptions used in the construction of the Biosphere Isotope Domains GB map is included in the associated publications for strontium (Evans, 2018) and sulphur (Chenery, 2018). The primary application of such datasets is for determining the provenance of skeletal material; although the data may also be of use in modern traceability studies of fauna and flora

    Advances in tensiometer-based suction control systems.

    Cunningham (2000) and Jotisankasa (2005) pioneered the development of tensiometer-based suction control systems. In these systems, wetting and drying of the soil are achieved by water injection and circulation of air in contact with the specimen while suction is monitored by sample-mounted high suction tensiometers. Unlike the axis translation technique, these systems avoid using elevated air pressures and better reproduce the drying and wetting conditions occurring in the field. Building upon these earlier works, this pa-per describes an automated tensiometer-based suction control system that enables direct measurement of water content changes inside the sample. A diaphragm pump forces air to flow inside a closed loop that runs across the sample while a moisture trap ensures that the relative humidity of the circulating air is kept low. As the circulating air dries the soil, the amount of abstracted water is measured by continuous weighing of the desiccant inside the moisture trap. Wetting of the sample is instead achieved by controlled injection of water through a solenoid valve connected to a pressurized volume gauge. The changes of soil water content are given by the difference between the amounts of water injected by the volume gauge and that retained by the desiccant. The system is used to impose cycles of drying and wetting on compacted clayey specimens and results from preliminary tests are presented

    Framing a Consent Form to Improve Consent Understanding and Determine How This Affects Willingness to Participate in HIV Cure Research: An Experimental Survey Study

    HIV cure research carries serious risks and negligible benefits. We investigated how participants understand these risks and what influences their willingness to participate. Through internet-based and in-person convenience sampling, 86 HIV+ participants completed an experimental survey. Participants were randomized to read a standard consent form describing a hypothetical HIV cure study or one adapted using Fuzzy Trace Theory—a decision-making model to facilitate complex information processing. We measured consent understanding and cognitive (e.g., safe/harmful) and affective (e.g., concerning, satisfying) evaluations of HIV cure research. Participants who read the adapted consent form had improved consent understanding, but only positive affective evaluations were associated with a willingness to participate.     A pilot randomised controlled trial of personalised care after treatment for prostate cancer (TOPCAT-P): nurse-led holistic-needs assessment and individualised psychoeducational intervention: study protocol

    INTRODUCTION. Prostate cancer is common and the incidence is increasing, but more men are living longer after diagnosis, and die with their disease rather than of it. Nonetheless, specific and substantial physical, sexual, emotional and mental health problems often lead to a poor quality of life. Urology services increasingly struggle to cope with the demands of follow-up care, and primary care is likely to play the central role in long-term follow-up. The present phase II trial will evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a nurse-led, person-centred psychoeducational intervention, delivered in community or primary care settings. METHODS AND ANALYSIS. Prostate cancer survivors diagnosed in the past 9-48 months and currently biochemically stable will be identified from hospital records by their treating clinician. Eligible men would have either completed radical treatment, or would be followed up with prostate specific antigen monitoring and symptom reporting. We will recruit 120 patients who will be randomised to receive either an augmented form of usual care, or an additional nurse-led intervention for a period of 36 weeks. Following the health policy in Wales, the intervention is offered by a key worker, is promoting prudent healthcare and is using a holistic needs assessment. Outcome measures will assess physical symptoms, psychological well-being, confidence in managing own health and quality of life. Healthcare service use will be measured over 36 weeks. Feedback interviews with patients and clinicians will further inform the acceptability of the intervention. Recruitment, attrition, questionnaire completion rates and outcome measures variability will be assessed, and results will inform the design of a future phase III trial and accompanying economic evaluation. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION. Ethics approval was granted by Bangor University and North Wales REC (13/WA/0291). Results will be reported in peer-reviewed publications, at scientific conferences, and directly through national cancer and primary care networks. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER. ISRCTN 34516019

    Normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) parameters for breast fibrosis: pooled results from two randomised trials

    Introduction: the dose–volume effect of radiation therapy on breast tissue is poorly understood. We estimate NTCP parameters for breast fibrosis after external beam radiotherapy.Materials and methods: we pooled individual patient data of 5856 patients from 2 trials including whole breast irradiation followed with or without a boost. A two-compartment dose volume histogram model was used with boost volume as the first compartment and the remaining breast volume as second compartment. Results from START-pilot trial (n?=?1410) were used to test the predicted models.Results: 26.8% patients in the Cambridge trial (5?years) and 20.7% patients in the EORTC trial (10?years) developed moderate-severe breast fibrosis. The best fit NTCP parameters were BEUD3(50)?=?136.4?Gy, ?50?=?0.9 and n?=?0.011 for the Niemierko model and BEUD3(50)?=?132?Gy, m?=?0.35 and n?=?0.012 for the Lyman Kutcher Burman model. The observed rates of fibrosis in the START-pilot trial agreed well with the predicted rates.Conclusions: this large multi-centre pooled study suggests that the effect of volume parameter is small and the maximum RT dose is the most important parameter to influence breast fibrosis. A small value of volume parameter ‘n’ does not fit with the hypothesis that breast tissue is a parallel organ. However, this may reflect limitations in our current scoring system of fibrosi

    Optimising web-based computer-tailored physical activity interventions for prostate cancer survivors: a randomised controlled trial examining the impact of website architecture on user engagement

    Background: Web-based computer-tailored interventions can assist prostate cancer survivors to become more physically active by providing personally relevant behaviour change support. This study aimed to explore how changing the website architecture (free choice vs. tunnelled) impacted engagement within a physical activity computer-tailored intervention targeting prostate cancer survivors. Methods: On a 2:2:1 ratio, 71 Australian prostate cancer survivors with local or locally advanced disease (mean age: 66.6 years ± 9.66) were randomised into either a free-choice (N = 27), tunnelled (N = 27) or minimal intervention control arm (N =17). The primary outcome was differences in usage of the physical activity self-monitoring and feedback modules between the two intervention arms. Differences in usage of other website components between the two intervention groups were explored as secondary outcomes. Further, secondary outcomes involving comparisons between all study groups (including the control) included usability, personal relevance, and behaviour change. Results: The average number of physical activity self-monitoring and feedback modules accessed was higher in the tunnelled arm (M 2.6 SD 1.3) compared to the free-choice arm (M 1.5 SD 1.4), p = 0.01. However, free-choice participants were significantly more likely to have engaged with the social support (p = 0.008) and habit formation (p = 0.003) 'once-off' modules compared to the standard tunnelled arm. There were no other between-group differences found for any other study outcomes. Conclusion: This study indicated that website architecture influences behavioural engagement.     Endothelial NADPH oxidase 4 protects against angiotensin II‐induced cardiac fibrosis and inflammation

    Aims Endothelial activation and inflammatory cell infiltration have important roles in the development of cardiac fibrosis induced by renin–angiotensin system activation. NADPH oxidases (Nox proteins) are expressed in endothelial cells (ECs) and alter their function. Previous studies indicated that Nox2 in ECs contributes to angiotensin II (AngII)‐induced cardiac fibrosis. However, the effects of EC Nox4 on cardiac fibrosis are unknown. Methods and results Transgenic (TG) mice overexpressing endothelial‐restricted Nox4 were studied alongside wild‐type (WT) littermates as controls. At baseline, Nox4 TG mice had significantly enlarged hearts compared with WT, with elongated cardiomyocytes (increased by 18.5%, P 0.05), but there were no differences in cardiac hypertrophy or contractile function between the two groups. TG hearts displayed significantly decreased inflammatory cell infiltration with reduced levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 in both the vasculature and myocardium compared with WT after AngII treatment. TG microvascular ECs stimulated with AngII in vitro supported significantly less leukocyte adhesion than WT ECs. Conclusions A chronic increase in endothelial Nox4 stimulates physiological cardiac hypertrophy and protects against AngII‐induced cardiac fibrosis by inhibiting EC activation and the recruitment of inflammatory cells. Highlights Mice with endothelium‐specific overexpression of Nox4 (EndoNox4 TG) exhibit eccentric hypertrophy with well‐preserved cardiac function at baseline. EndoNox4 TG mice develop significantly less interstitial cardiac fibrosis in response to chronic pressure AngII stimulation, independent of cardiac hypertrophy. Overexpression of Nox4 in endothelial cells reduces AngII‐induced endothelial activation. An increase in endothelial Nox4 inhibits AngII‐induced recruitment of inflammatory cells in the heart
