    The definition for the notion of a "function" is not cast in stone, but depends upon what we adopt as types in our language. With partial equivalence relations (pers) as types in a relational language, we show that the functional relations are precisely those satisfying the simple equation f = f o fu o f, where "o" and "u" are respectively the composition and converse operators for relations. This report presents a calculational programming framework based upon the notion of binary relations as programs, and partial equivalence relations (pers) as types. Working with relations as programs generalises the functional paradigm, admiting non-determinism and the use of relation converse. Working with pers as types permits a natural treatment of types that are subject to laws and restrictions

    A Smartphone Compatible SONAR Ranging Attachment for 2-D Mapping

    The ability to attach external devices to smartphones has revolutionized the role of smartphones by extending their capabilities beyond the limitations of commodity hardware. Developing external attachments that allow smartphones to sense the depth of an area will facilitate the development of new immersive applications and technologies. In this paper, we propose a smartphone compatible SONAR ranging attachment and address the compatibility problem by proposing a hybrid hardware/software modulator that allows a digital sensor to communicate with a smartphone via the 3.5-mm headphone jack, found on most smartphones. We evaluate the proposed sensor using two metrics, accuracy and spatial resolution. We evaluate the accuracy of this system by measuring known distances with the sensor and comparing them. We measure the sensor\u27s spatial resolution by using ranging information from the SONAR module along with the phone\u27s gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer to construct a two-dimensional map of a space

    Disorder-Induced Shift of Condensation Temperature for Dilute Trapped Bose Gases

    We determine the leading shift of the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature for an ultracold dilute atomic gas in a harmonic trap due to weak disorder by treating both a Gaussian and a Lorentzian spatial correlation for the quenched disorder potential. Increasing the correlation length from values much smaller than the geometric mean of the trap scale and the mean particle distance to much larger values leads first to an increase of the positive shift to a maximum at this critical length scale and then to a decrease.Comment: Author information under http://www.theo-phys.uni-essen.de/tp/ags/pelster_di

    GRB 070714B - Discovery of the Highest Spectroscopically Confirmed Short Burst Redshift

    Gemini Nod & Shuffle spectroscopy on the host of the short GRB 070714B shows a single emission line at 7167 angstroms which, based on a grizJHK photometric redshift, we conclude is the 3727 angstrom [O II] line. This places the host at a redshift of z=.923 exceeding the previous record for the highest spectroscopically confirmed short burst redshift of z=.546 held by GRB 051221.     A method has been developed for release/isolation of O-glycans from glycoproteins in whole cell lysates for mass spectrometric analysis. Cells are lysed in SDS, which is then exchanged for urea and ammonium bicarbonate in a centrifugal filter, before treating with NH4OH to release O-glycans. Following centrifugation, O-glycans are recovered in the filtrate. Sonication achieves O-glycan release in 1 h. Combining the established protocol for filter-aided N-glycan separation, here optimized for enhanced PNGase F efficiency, with the developed O-glycan release method allows analysis of both N- and O-glycans from one sample, in the same filter unit, from 0.5 to 1 million cells. The method is compatible with subsequent analysis of the residual protein by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) after glycan release. The medium throughput approach is amenable to analysis of biological replicates, offering a simple way to assess the often subtle changes to glycan profiles accompanying differentiation and disease progression, in a statistically robust way
