A postmortem investigation of the Type IIb supernova 2001ig
We present images taken with the GMOS instrument on Gemini-South, in
excellent (<0.5 arcsec) seeing, of SN 2001ig in NGC 7424, ~1000 days after
explosion. A point source seen at the site of the SN is shown to have colours
inconsistent with being an H II region or a SN 1993J-like remnant, but can be
matched to a late-B through late-F supergiant with A_V<1. We believe this
object is the massive binary companion responsible for periodic modulation in
mass loss material around the Wolf-Rayet progenitor which gave rise to

Neural Networks as a Tool for Constructing Continuous NDVI Time Series from AVHRR and MODIS
The long term Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer-Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (AVHRR-NDVI) record provides a critical historical perspective on vegetation dynamics necessary for global change research. Despite the proliferation of new sources of global, moderate resolution vegetation datasets, the remote sensing community is still struggling to create datasets derived from multiple sensors that allow the simultaneous use of spectral vegetation for time series analysis. To overcome the non-stationary aspect of NDVI, we use an artificial neural network (ANN) to map the NDVI indices from AVHRR to those from MODIS using atmospheric, surface type and sensor-specific inputs to account for the differences between the sensors. The NDVI dynamics and range of MODIS NDVI data at one degree is matched and extended through the AVHRR record. Four years of overlap between the two sensors is used to train a neural network to remove atmospheric and sensor specific effects on the AVHRR NDVI. Optical and near-IR observations of SN 1998bw
SN 1998bw, especially after the discovery of GRB 030329/SN 2003dh, seems to
be the equivalent of the Rosetta stone for the SN/GRB connection. In this paper
I review optical and near IR observations that have been carried out for this
uncanny object, which has probably confirmed suspicions and ideas originally

SUPERNOVAE: ten years of SN 1993J, Valencia (Spain
Photometry of SN 2002ic and Implications for the Progenitor Mass-Loss History
We present new pre-maximum and late-time optical photometry of the Type
Ia/IIn supernova 2002ic. These observations are combined with the published
V-band magnitudes of Hamuy et al. (2003) and the VLT spectrophotometry of Wang
et al. (2004) to construct the most extensive light curve to date of this
unusual supernova. The observed flux at late time is significantly higher
relative to the flux at maximum than that of any other observed Type Ia
supernova and continues to fade very slowly a year after explosion. Our
analysis of the light curve suggests that a non-Type Ia supernova component
becomes prominent days after explosion. Modeling of the non-Type Ia
supernova component as heating from the shock interaction of the supernova
ejecta with pre-existing circumstellar material suggests the presence of a
cm gap or trough between the progenitor system and the
surrounding circumstellar material. This gap could be due to significantly
lower mass-loss years prior to explosion or
evacuation of the circumstellar material by a low-density fast wind. The latter
is consistent with observed properties of proto-planetary nebulae and with
models of white-dwarf + asymptotic giant branch star progenitor systems with
the asymptotic giant branch star in the proto-planetary nebula phase.Comment: accepted for publication in Ap
Investigation of error detection capabilities of phantom, EPID and MLC log file based IMRT QA methods
A patient specific quality assurance (QA) should detect errors that originate anywhere in the treatment planning process. However, the increasing complexity of treatment plans has increased the need for improvements in the accuracy of the patient specific pretreatment verification process. This has led to the utilization of higher resolution QA methods such as the electronic portal imaging device (EPID) as well as MLC log files and it is important to know the types of errors that can be detected with these methods. In this study, we will compare the ability of three QA methods (Delta 4 ®, MU-EPID, Dynalog QA) to detect specific errors. Multileaf collimator (MLC) errors, gantry angle, and dose errors were introduced into five volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans for a total of 30 plans containing errors. The original plans (without errors) were measured five times with each method to set a threshold for detectability using two standard deviations from the mean and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) derived limits. Gamma passing percentages as well as percentage error of planning target volume (PTV) were used for passing determination. When applying the standard 95% pass rate at 3%/3 mm gamma analysis errors were detected at a rate of 47, 70, and 27% for the Delta 4 , MU-EPID and Dynalog QA respectively. When using thresholds set at 2 standard deviations from our base line measurements errors were detected at a rate of 60, 30, and 47% for the Delta 4 , MU-EPID and Dynalog QA respectively. When using ROC derived thresholds errors were detected at a rate of 60, 27, and 47% for the Delta 4 , MU-EPID and Dynalog QA respectively. When using dose to the PTV and the Dynalog method 11 of the 15 small MLC errors were detected while none were caught using gamma analysis. A combination of the EPID and Dynalog QA methods (scaling Dynalog doses using EPID images) matches the detection capabilities of the Delta 4 by adding additional comparison metrics. These additional metrics are vital in relating the QA measurement to the dose received by the patient which is ultimately what is being confirmed
Late-Time Optical and UV Spectra of SN 1979C and SN 1980K
A low-dispersion Keck I spectrum of SN 1980K taken in August 1995 (t = 14.8
yr after explosion) and a November 1997 MDM spectrum (t = 17.0 yr) show broad
5500 km s^{-1} emission lines of H\alpha, [O I] 6300,6364 A, and [O II]
7319,7330 A. Weaker but similarly broad lines detected include [Fe II] 7155 A,
[S II] 4068,4072 A, and a blend of [Fe II] lines at 5050--5400 A. The presence
of strong [S II] 4068,4072 A emission but a lack of [S II] 6716,6731 A emission
suggests electron densities of 10^{5-6} cm^{-3}. From the 1997 spectra, we
estimate an H\alpha flux of 1.3 \pm 0.2 \times 10^{-15} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1}
indicating a 25% decline from 1987--1992 levels during the period 1994 to 1997,

Legionella species colonization of water distribution systems, pools and air conditioning systems in cruise ships and ferries
Background: Legionnaires' disease continues to be a public health concern in passenger ships. This study was scheduled in order to investigate Legionella spp. colonization of water distribution systems (WDS), recreational pools, and air-conditioning systems on board ferries and cruise ships in an attempt to identify risk factors for Legionella spp. colonization associated with ship water systems and water characteristics. Methods: Water systems of 21 ferries and 10 cruise ships including WDS, air conditioning systems and pools were investigated for the presence of Legionella spp. Results: The 133 samples collected from the 10 cruise ships WDS, air conditioning systems and pools were negative for Legionella spp. Of the 21 ferries WDS examined, 14 (66.7%) were legionellae-positive. A total of 276 samples were collected from WDS and air conditioning systems. Legionella spp. was isolated from 37.8% of the hot water samples and 17.5% of the cold water samples. Of the total 96 positive isolates, 87 (90.6%) were L. pneumophila. Legionella spp. colonization was positively associated with ship age. The temperature of the hot water samples was negatively associated with colonization of L. pneumophila serogroup (sg) 1 and that of L. pneumophila sg 2 to 14. Increases in pH >= 7.8 and total plate count >= 400 CFU/L, correlated positively with the counts of L. pneumophila sg 2 to 14 and Legionella spp. respectively. Free chlorine of >= 0.2 mg/L inhibited colonization of Legionella spp. Conclusion: WDS of ferries can be heavily colonized by Legionella spp. and may present a risk of Legionnaires' disease for passengers and crew members. Guidelines and advising of Legionnaires' disease prevention regarding ferries are needed, in particular for operators and crew members
Helium Emission in the Type Ic SN 1999cq
We present the first unambiguous detection of helium emission lines in
spectra of Type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic). The presence of He I lines, with full
width at half maximum ~ 2000 km/s, and the distinct absence of any other
intermediate-width emission (e.g., Halpha), implies that the ejecta of SN Ic
1999cq are interacting with dense circumstellar material composed of almost
pure helium. This strengthens the argument that the progenitors of SNe Ic are
core-collapse events in stars that have lost both their hydrogen and helium
envelopes, either through a dense wind or mass-transfer to a companion. In this
way, SN 1999cq is similar to supernovae such as SN 1987K and SN 1993J that
helped firmly establish a physical connection between Type Ib and Type II
supernovae. The light curve of SN 1999cq is very fast, with an extremely rapid
rise followed by a quick decline. SN 1999cq is also found to exhibit a high
level of emission at blue wavelengths (< 5500 A), likely resulting from either
an unusually large amount of iron and iron-group element emission or

A Search for Very Active Stars in the Galaxy
We report the first results of a systematic search near the plane of the
Galaxy for the so called very active stars (VAS), which are characterized by a
hard X-ray spectrum and activity in the radio domain. Candidates with hard
X-ray binary-like spectra have been selected from the Bright ROSAT Source
Catalogue in the Zone of Avoidance () and were tentatively
identified in GB6/PMM/NVSS radio surveys. Most of them were observed with the
ATCA and VLA. Precise radio coordinates have led to unambiguous optical
identification for 60 candidates, and a sub-sample of five of themhas been
observed with the VLT. Also some discovery and confirmatory spectra were
obtained with the AAT (4-m) and BTA (6-m). Spectroscopy with moderate
dispersion, made with the FORS1 spectrograph of the VLT has revealed two
stellar objects (one of them, VASC J1628-41, is definitivelya binary VAS), one
new AGN and two featureless spectrum sources. One of these objects, VASC
J1353-66, shows a marginal evidence of proper motion, which, if confirmed,
would imply the discovery of a new type of galactic source.Comment: to appear in A&A, 7 figure
