Electrostatic Structures in Space Plasmas: Stability of Two-dimensional Magnetic Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal Modes

Electrostatic structures have been observed in many regions of space plasmas, including the solar wind, the magnetosphere, the auroral acceleration region, and in association with shocks, turbulence, and magnetic reconnection. Due to potentially large amplitude of electric fields within these structures, their effects on particle heating, scattering, or acceleration can be important. One possible theoretical description of some of these structures is the concept of Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal (BGK) modes, which are exact nonlinear solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system of equations in collisionless kinetic theory. BGK modes have been studied extensively for many decades, predominately in one dimension (1D), although there have been observations showing that some of these structures have clear 3D features. While there have been approximate solutions of higher dimensional BGK modes, an exact 3D BGK mode solution in a finite magnetic field has not been found yet. Recently we have constructed exact solutions of 2D BGK modes in a magnetized plasma with finite magnetic field strength in order to gain insights of the ultimate 3D theory [Ng, Bhattacharjee, and Skiff, Phys. Plasmas 13, 055903 (2006)]. Based on the analytic form of these solutions, as well as Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations, we will present numerical studies of their stability for different levels of background magnetic field strength.Comment: Submitted to AIP Journal Proceedings for "Tenth Annual International Astrophysics Conference

    Get PDF
A mini-array that utilizes the Linsley effect is proposed for the measurement of large air showers. An estimate of the detectable shower rates for various shower sizes is made. Details of the detection and data collection systems are also described

Dynamical stability of entanglement between spin ensembles

We study the dynamical stability of the entanglement between the two spin ensembles in the presence of an environment. For a comparative study, we consider the two cases: a single spin ensemble, and two ensembles linearly coupled to a bath, respectively. In both circumstances, we assume the validity of the Markovian approximation for the bath. We examine the robustness of the state by means of the growth of the linear entropy which gives a measure of the purity of the system. We find out macroscopic entangled states of two spin ensembles can stably exist in a common bath. This result may be very useful to generate and detect macroscopic entanglement in a common noisy environment and even a stable macroscopic memory.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Non Singular Origin of the Universe and the Cosmological Constant Problem (CCP)

We consider a non singular origin for the Universe starting from an Einstein static Universe in the framework of a theory which uses two volume elements gd4x\sqrt{-{g}}d^{4}x and Φd4x\Phi d^{4}x, where Φ\Phi is a metric independent density, also curvature, curvature square terms, first order formalism and for scale invariance a dilaton field ϕ\phi are considered in the action. In the Einstein frame we also add a cosmological term that parametrizes the zero point fluctuations. The resulting effective potential for the dilaton contains two flat regions, for ϕ\phi \rightarrow \infty relevant for the non singular origin of the Universe and ϕ\phi \rightarrow -\infty, describing our present Universe. Surprisingly, avoidance of singularities and stability as ϕ\phi \rightarrow \infty imply a positive but small vacuum energy as ϕ\phi \rightarrow -\infty. Zero vacuum energy density for the present universe is the "threshold" for universe creation.Comment: awarded an honorable mention in the Gravity Research Foundation 2011 Awards for Essays in Gravitation for 201

    Information and Particle Physics

Information measures for relativistic quantum spinors are constructed to satisfy various postulated properties such as normalisation invariance and positivity. Those measures are then used to motivate generalised Lagrangians meant to probe shorter distance physics within the maximum uncertainty framework. The modified evolution equations that follow are necessarily nonlinear and simultaneously violate Lorentz invariance, supporting previous heuristic arguments linking quantum nonlinearity with Lorentz violation. The nonlinear equations also break discrete symmetries. We discuss the implications of our results for physics in the neutrino sector and cosmology

    Entangled light from Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose a method to generate entangled light with a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a cavity, a system realized in recent experiments. The atoms of the condensate are trapped in a periodic potential generated by a cavity mode. The condensate is continuously pumped by a laser and spontaneously emits a pair of photons of different frequencies in two distinct cavity modes. In this way, the condensate mediates entanglement between two cavity modes which leak out and can be separated and exhibit continuous variable entanglement. The scheme exploits the experimentally demonstrated strong, steady and collective coupling of condensate atoms to a cavity field.Comment: 5 pages and 5 figure

Peran Kemampuan Manajerial sebagai Mekanisme Peningkatan Kualitas Laba dan Nilai Perusahaan

This research is aimed to investigate the role of managerial ability as a mechanism to improve earnings quality as a mediating effect influence on firm value. The sample used in this study were non-financial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2010 to 2014. The sample were selected using purposive random sampling method. The number of sample resulted form this method are 178 companies. By using path analysis method, the results show that managerial ability has positive and significant relationship to the earnings quality and firm value. In addition, Sobel\u27s test results show that earnings quality does not mediate the effect of managerial ability on firm value.---Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi peran kemampuan manajerial sebagai mekanisme untuk meningkatkan kualitas laba sebagai efek mediasi terhadap nilai Perusahaan.
