    Matched short-term depression and recovery encodes interspike interval at a central synapse

    Reversible decreases in synaptic strength, known as short-term depression (STD), are widespread in neural circuits. Various computational roles have been attributed to STD but these tend to focus upon the initial depression rather than the subsequent recovery. We studied the role of STD and recovery at an excitatory synapse between the fast extensor tibiae (FETi) and flexor tibiae (flexor) motor neurons in the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) by making paired intracellular recordings in vivo. Over behaviorally relevant pre-synaptic spike frequencies, we found that this synapse undergoes matched frequency-dependent STD and recovery; higher frequency spikes that evoke stronger, faster STD also produce stronger, faster recovery. The precise matching of depression and recovery time constants at this synapse ensures that flexor excitatory post-synaptic potential (EPSP) amplitude encodes the presynaptic FETi interspike interval (ISI). Computational modelling shows that this precise matching enables the FETi-flexor synapse to linearly encode the ISI in the EPSP amplitude, a coding strategy that may be widespread in neural circuits

    Genetic parameters for casein and urea content in the Italian Brown Swiss dairy cattle

    A total of 137,753 test day records of 20,745 Italian Brown Swiss dairy cows from 26 provinces of Italy were used to estimate heritability for casein and urea content in milk and their genetic correlations with other production traits and milk somatic cell score. Milk component values were obtained by Fourier Transformed Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy from milk samples collected during national routine recording and were analysed using test day repeatability animal models. Fixed effects included 1,001 levels of herd-test date, 15 classes of days in milk, and 13 classes of age at calving within parity. The variation among cows was large for most of the traits. The heritability value for casein content was 0.31, as for protein content, and genetic and phenotypic correlations between these two traits were large (0.99 and 0.97 respectively). Milk urea content had a heritability of 0.17 and a positive genetic relationship with fat (0.12), null with protein (0.03) and casein (0.002) content and a negative genetic correlation with milk yield (-0.17) suggesting that the genetic improvement for milk urea content would be possible, but genetic gain would be affected by other traits included as selection criteria in the economic index and by their relative economic emphasis

    Short communication: Characterization of a monoclonal antibody for κ-casein B of cow's milk1

    A monoclonal antibody (antik-B) against an oligopeptide of 23 AA corresponding to the region 131-153 of bovine kappa-casein (kappa-CN) B was generated using the Human Combinatorial Antibody Library (HuCAL) technology. Both AA substitutions distinguishing kappa-CN A and B are located in that region (positions 136 and 148). In this study, the reactivity of antik-B to milk samples collected from cows previously genotyped as CSN3*AA, CSN3*AB, and CSN3*BB was tested. According to Western blot results, antik-B recognized kappa-CN B and it showed no cross-reactivity toward kappa-CN A and other milk proteins. Furthermore, a modified Western blot method, urea-PAGE Western blot, was set up to assess the reactivity of antik-B toward all isoforms of kappa-CN B. In conclusion, antik-B was specific to kappa-CN B in milk and it seemed to be reactive toward all its isoforms

    Heterogeneous Delays in Neural Networks

    We investigate heterogeneous coupling delays in complex networks of excitable elements described by the FitzHugh-Nagumo model. The effects of discrete as well as of uni- and bimodal continuous distributions are studied with a focus on different topologies, i.e., regular, small-world, and random networks. In the case of two discrete delay times resonance effects play a major role: Depending on the ratio of the delay times, various characteristic spiking scenarios, such as coherent or asynchronous spiking, arise. For continuous delay distributions different dynamical patterns emerge depending on the width of the distribution. For small distribution widths, we find highly synchronized spiking, while for intermediate widths only spiking with low degree of synchrony persists, which is associated with traveling disruptions, partial amplitude death, or subnetwork synchronization, depending sensitively on the network topology. If the inhomogeneity of the coupling delays becomes too large, global amplitude death is induced

    Resumo: Estudos de adaptabilidade e estabilidade de genótipos são importantes nas fases finais de um programa de melhoramento para subsidiar a recomendação de novas cultivares. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a adaptabilidade e estabilidade produtiva de genótipos de feijão-caupi de portes ereto e semiereto nos estados de Minas Gerais e São Paulo. Foram avaliados 20 genótipos (16 linhagens e quatro cultivares) em seis ambientes, no biênio 2011-2012. Os ensaios foram conduzidos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. Foram realizadas análises de variância conjunta e a adaptabilidade e a estabilidade dos genótipos foram analisadas pelo método de Lin e Bins modificado por Carneiro (1998). Observaram-se diferenças para os efeitos de ambientes e interação genótipo x ambiente. A linhagem MNC03-725F-3 apresenta ampla adaptabilidade e alta estabilidade aos ambientes avaliados de Minas Gerais e São Paulo, sendo também a mais adaptada a ambientes favoráveis, enquanto que a linhagem MNC02-675F-9-3, a mais adaptada a ambientes desfavoráveis
