Background and aim: We aimed to study whether the effect of adolescent adiposity on adult blood pressure and insulin resistance was mediated by adult adiposity. Methods and results: Data from the EPITeen cohort at 13, 17 and 21 years was used (n = 2211). Sex- and age-specific body mass index z-scores (BMIz) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were used as indicators of total and central adiposity, respectively. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), glucose and insulin were assessed at 21 years and the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR) was used as a marker of insulin resistance. Path analysis was applied to evaluate direct and indirect effects of adiposity (13, 17 and 21y) on adult SBP and HOMA-IR, separately for total and central adiposity and for each outcome. Results are presented as standardized regression coefficients [β (95%CI)]. The total effect of BMIz at 13 years on SBP at 21 years was 0.211 (0.178; 0.244), totally mediated by adult BMIz. Total effect of BMIz 13y on HOMA-IR was 0.248 (0.196; 0.299). Although this effect was mostly mediated by BMIz 21y, an additional direct effect from BMIz 17y was found [β = −0.240 (−0.315; −0.164)]. Central adiposity was also positively associated with SBP and HOMA-IR at 21 years, and the effect of adolescent WHR was totally mediated by adult WHR for both outcomes. Conclusions: The effect of adolescent adiposity on adult SBP and HOMA-IR was mostly mediated by adult adiposity. However, for HOMA-IR an additional direct effect from total adiposity at 17 years was found. This study was supported by national funding from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) within the Epidemiology Research Unit e Institute of Public Health, University of Porto (UID/DTP/047507/2013). THROES: a caTalogue of HeRschel Observations of Evolved Stars. I. PACS range spectroscopy

This is the first of a series of papers presenting the THROES (A caTalogue of HeRschel Observations of Evolved Stars) project, intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the spectroscopic results obtained in the far-infrared (55-670 microns) with the Her- schel space observatory on low-to-intermediate mass evolved stars in our Galaxy. Here we introduce the catalogue of interactively reprocessed PACS (Photoconductor Array Camera and Spectrometer) spectra covering the 55-200 microns range for 114 stars in this category for which PACS range spectroscopic data is available in the Herschel Science Archive (HSA). Our sample includes objects spanning a range of evolutionary stages, from the asymptotic giant branch to the planetary nebula phase, displaying a wide variety of chemical and physical properties. The THROES/PACS catalogue is accessible via a dedicated web-based inter- face (https://throes.cab.inta-csic.es/) and includes not only the science-ready Herschel spectroscopic data for each source, but also complementary photometric and spectroscopic data from other infrared observatories, namely IRAS (Infrared Astronomical Satellite), ISO (Infrared Space Observatory) or AKARI, at overlapping wavelengths. Our goal is to create a legacy-value Herschel dataset that can be used by the scientific community in the future to deepen our knowledge and understanding of these latest stages of the evolution of low-to-intermediate mass stars.Comment: 38 page

Learning scorecard: Monitor and foster student learning through gamification

    Get PDF
This paper presents the Learning Scorecard (LS), a platform that enables students to monitor their learning progress in a Higher Education course during the semester, generating the data that will also support the ongoing supervision of the class performance by the course coordinator. The LS uses gamification techniques to increase student engagement with the course. Business Intelligence best practices are also applied to provide an analytical environment for student and faculty to monitor course performance. This paper describes the initial design of the LS, based on a Balanced Scorecard approach, and the prototype version of the platform, currently in use by graduate and undergraduate students in the fall semester of 2016-2017.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The effect of osteoarthritis definition on prevalence and incidence estimates: A systematic review

Objective: To understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), according to case definition, in knee, hip and hand joints. Method: A systematic review was carried out in PUBMED and SCOPUS databases comprising the date of publication period from January 1995 to February 2011. We attempted to summarise data on the incidence and prevalence of OA according to different methods of assessment: self-reported, radiographic and symptomatic OA (clinical plus radiographic). Prevalence estimates were combined through meta-analysis and between-study heterogeneity was quantified. Results: Seventy-two papers were reviewed (nine on incidence and 63 on prevalence). Higher OA prevalences are seen when radiographic OA definition was used for all age groups. Prevalence meta-analysis showed high heterogeneity between studies even in each specific joint and using the same OA definition. Although the knee is the most studied joint, the highest OA prevalence estimates were found in hand joints. OA of the knee tends to be more prevalent in women than in men independently of the OA definition used, but no gender differences were found in hip and hand OA. Insufficient data for incidence studies didn't allow us to make any comparison according to joint site or OA definition. Conclusions: Radiographic case definition of OA presented the highest prevalences. Within each joint site, self-reported and symptomatic OA definitions appear to present similar estimates. The high heterogeneity found in the studies limited further conclusions. © 2011 Osteoarthritis Research Society International

The aim of this thesis was the synthesis and characterization of novel luminescent systems containing lanthanides, at molecular level (coordination compounds) and in nanomaterials. Coordination modes of several aromatic ambidentate ligands, with O, N and/or S donor atoms, with lanthanide(III) ions (La, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Er and Tm) were investigated, particularly with Eu and Tb due to their luminescence properties. Pyridine carboxylic acids were used for coordination, such as picolinic, 3-hydroxypicolinic, 2-hydroxynicotinic and 2-aminonicotinic acids. Derivatives of benzoic acid were also used, namely the 2,6-dihydroxybenzoic, anthranilic and thiosalicylic acids. Some of the complexes obtained were selected and used to prepare novel materials by their inclusion in solid matrices (silica nanoparticles). The coordination of [60]fullerene derivatives with lanthanide(III) ions was investigated. [60]Fullerene was derivatized using 5-formylsalicylic acid, 4’-formylbenzo-15-crown-5 or diethyl malonate, in order to have the [60]fullerene containing O donor atoms able to coordination. Silver nanostructured films were prepared and were deposited in nanoparticles composites of Eu2O3/SiO2. The possible enhancement of the luminescence of Eu3+ in this system was investigated. Luminescence studies were carried out for the generality of the prepared materials
