A global data set of soil particle size properties
A standardized global data set of soil horizon thicknesses and textures (particle size distributions) was compiled. This data set will be used by the improved ground hydrology parameterization designed for the Goddard Institute for Space Studies General Circulation Model (GISS GCM) Model 3. The data set specifies the top and bottom depths and the percent abundance of sand, silt, and clay of individual soil horizons in each of the 106 soil types cataloged for nine continental divisions. When combined with the World Soil Data File, the result is a global data set of variations in physical properties throughout the soil profile. These properties are important in the determination of water storage in individual soil horizons and exchange of water with the lower atmosphere. The incorporation of this data set into the GISS GCM should improve model performance by including more realistic variability in land-surface properties
Development of a Green Roof Environmental Monitoring and Meteorological Network in New York City
Green roofs (with plant cover) are gaining attention in the United States as a versatile new environmental mitigation technology. Interest in data on the environmental performance of these systems is growing, particularly with respect to urban heat island mitigation and stormwater runoff control. We are deploying research stations on a diverse array of green roofs within the New York City area, affording a new opportunity to monitor urban environmental conditions at small scales. We show some green roof systems being monitored, describe the sensor selection employed to study energy balance, and show samples of selected data. These roofs should be superior to other urban rooftops as sites for meteorological stations
Time Travelers: Mapping Museum Visitors across Time and Space
Open-air museums may encompass structures, buildings, sites, and other types of objects and artifacts that span across space and, because these objects were built and/or used during multiple periods of significance, across time. The multiplicity of storylines can confuse visitors. Thus, this paper introduces Somewhere in Time, a novel installation that integrates a combination of technologies with historic content that allows users to explore both time and space across museum structures/sites. We describe our work conceptualizing and designing a personalized, interactive map (Time Travelers) that allows visitors to explore complex narratives across both time and space
Navy composite maintenance and repair experience
The Navy has been a strong proponent of composites for aircraft structure. Fleet use of composites started with the F-14 in the early 1970's and has steadily increased. This experience base provides sufficient information to allow an evaluation of the maintenance performance of polymer composites in service. A summary is presented of the Navy's experience with maintenance of composite structure. The general types of damage experienced in the fleet as well as specific examples of composite damage to aircraft is described. The impact of future designs on supportability is also discussed
Observation of Plasma Focusing of a 28.5 GeV Positron Beam
The observation of plasma focusing of a 28.5 GeV positron beam is reported.
The plasma was formed by ionizing a nitrogen jet only 3 mm thick. Simultaneous
focusing in both transverse dimensions was observed with effective focusing
strengths of order Tesla per micron. The minimum area of the beam spot was
reduced by a factor of 2.0 +/- 0.3 by the plasma. The longitudinal beam
envelope was measured and compared with numerical calculations
Semiclassical Decay of Excited String States on Leading Regge Trajectories
We study the decay of hadrons based on a semiclassical string model. By
including quark mass effects we find that the width to mass ratio \G/m is an
increasing function of , which increases most rapidly for massive quarks.
This is consistent with the available data. The decay probability of hadrons on
the leading Regge trajectories is computed taking the effect of the string
rotation into account. The resulting decay probability is no longer uniform
along the length of the string but varies in a manner that is in qualitative
agreement with the available data. We argue in favour of possible experiments
that would test our predictions more accurately and help open a window to the

Semiclassical wave equation and exactness of the WKB method
The exactness of the semiclassical method for three-dimensional problems in
quantum mechanics is analyzed. The wave equation appropriate in the
quasiclassical region is derived. It is shown that application of the standard
leading-order WKB quantization condition to this equation reproduces exact
energy eigenvalues for all solvable spherically symmetric potentials.Comment: 13 page
Hypoglycemia and Diabetes: A Report of a Workgroup of the American Diabetes Association and The Endocrine Society
OBJECTIVE To review the evidence about the impact of hypoglycemia on patients with diabetes that has become available since the past reviews of this subject by the American Diabetes Association and The Endocrine Society and to provide guidance about how this new information should be incorporated into clinical practice.
PARTICIPANTS Five members of the American Diabetes Association and five members of The Endocrine Society with expertise in different aspects of hypoglycemia were invited by the Chair, who is a member of both, to participate in a planning conference call and a 2-day meeting that was also attended by staff from both organizations. Subsequent communications took place via e-mail and phone calls. The writing group consisted of those invitees who participated in the writing of the manuscript. The workgroup meeting was supported by educational grants to the American Diabetes Association from Lilly USA, LLC and Novo Nordisk and sponsorship to the American Diabetes Association from Sanofi. The sponsors had no input into the development of or content of the report.
EVIDENCE The writing group considered data from recent clinical trials and other studies to update the prior workgroup report. Unpublished data were not used. Expert opinion was used to develop some conclusions.
CONSENSUS PROCESS Consensus was achieved by group discussion during conference calls and face-to-face meetings, as well as by iterative revisions of the written document. The document was reviewed and approved by the American Diabetes Association’s Professional Practice Committee in October 2012 and approved by the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors in November 2012 and was reviewed and approved by The Endocrine Society’s Clinical Affairs Core Committee in October 2012 and by Council in November 2012.
CONCLUSIONS The workgroup reconfirmed the previous definitions of hypoglycemia in diabetes, reviewed the implications of hypoglycemia on both short- and long-term outcomes, considered the implications of hypoglycemia on treatment outcomes, presented strategies to prevent hypoglycemia, and identified knowledge gaps that should be addressed by future research. In addition, tools for patients to report hypoglycemia at each visit and for clinicians to document counseling are provided
