    An All-Permanent Magnet 10 GHz "Multi-Mode" ECR Ion Source for the Production of Metallic Ions

    In order to measure cross sections for charge-changing processes in collisions between ions in our ion-ion [1] experiment one ion beam has to be produced on a high voltage terminal. Since there are restrictions concerning the available space and electrical power an all-permanent magnet 10 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ions source has been built earlier [2]. This ion source is in operation and produces multiply charged ions from gaseous elements with sufficient intensities. Now there is a growing interest in the use of ions from metallic elements. For this purpose a new fully permanent 10 GHz ECR ion source has been constructed and tested. The main feature of this ion source is a stepped plasma chamber (see fig. 1) which allows the propagation of higher microwave modes in the plasma and also results in a bigger plasma volume. The longitudinal magnetic field for the axial plasma confinement is produced by two ring magnets whereas the radial magnetic field is formed by a Halbach-type [3] hexapole magnet. The microwave is produced in a frequency-tunable magnetron (8.75-10.5 GHz, 250 Watt max.) and coupled to the plasma via a coaxial line. The applied microwave frequency turned out to be one of the most important parameters when optimizing the ion source on different charge states since a variation of the magnetic field is not possible with the present configuration

    A nonequilibrium renormalization group approach to turbulent reheating

    We use nonequilibrium renormalization group (RG) techniques to analyze the thermalization process in quantum field theory, and by extension reheating after inflation. Even if at a high scale Λ\Lambda the theory is described by a non-dissipative λϕ4\lambda\phi^{4} theory, the RG running induces nontrivial noise and dissipation. For long wavelength, slowly varying field configurations, the noise and dissipation are white and ohmic, respectively. The theory will then tend to thermalize to an effective temperature given by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; to appear in J. Phys.     Combined effects of time spent in physical activity, sedentary behaviors and sleep on obesity and cardio-metabolic health markers: a novel compositional data analysis approach

    <div><p>The associations between time spent in sleep, sedentary behaviors (SB) and physical activity with health are usually studied without taking into account that time is finite during the day, so time spent in each of these behaviors are codependent. Therefore, little is known about the combined effect of time spent in sleep, SB and physical activity, that together constitute a composite whole, on obesity and cardio-metabolic health markers. Cross-sectional analysis of NHANES 2005–6 cycle on N = 1937 adults, was undertaken using a compositional analysis paradigm, which accounts for this intrinsic codependence. Time spent in SB, light intensity (LIPA) and moderate to vigorous activity (MVPA) was determined from accelerometry and combined with self-reported sleep time to obtain the 24 hour time budget composition. The distribution of time spent in sleep, SB, LIPA and MVPA is significantly associated with BMI, waist circumference, triglycerides, plasma glucose, plasma insulin (all p<0.001), and systolic (p<0.001) and diastolic blood pressure (p<0.003), but not HDL or LDL. Within the composition, the strongest positive effect is found for the proportion of time spent in MVPA. Strikingly, the effects of MVPA replacing another behavior and of MVPA being displaced by another behavior are asymmetric. For example, re-allocating 10 minutes of SB to MVPA was associated with a lower waist circumference by 0.001% but if 10 minutes of MVPA is displaced by SB this was associated with a 0.84% higher waist circumference. The proportion of time spent in LIPA and SB were detrimentally associated with obesity and cardiovascular disease markers, but the association with SB was stronger. For diabetes risk markers, replacing SB with LIPA was associated with more favorable outcomes. Time spent in MVPA is an important target for intervention and preventing transfer of time from LIPA to SB might lessen the negative effects of physical inactivity.</p></div

    Age-related hyperkyphosis, independent of spinal osteoporosis, is associated with impaired mobility in older community-dwelling women

    While many assume hyperkyphosis reflects underlying spinal osteoporosis and vertebral fractures, our results suggest hyperkyphosis is independently associated with decreased mobility. Hyperyphosis is associated with slower Timed Up and Go performance times and may be a useful clinical marker signaling the need for evaluation of vertebral fracture and falling risk. While multiple studies have demonstrated negative effects of hyperkyphosis on physical function, none have disentangled the relationship between hyperkyphosis, impaired function, and underlying spinal osteoporosis. The purpose of this study is to determine whether kyphosis, independent of spinal osteoporosis, is associated with mobility on the Timed Up and Go, and to quantify effects of other factors contributing to impaired mobility. We used data for 3,108 community-dwelling women aged 55-80 years in the Fracture Intervention Trial. All participants had measurements of kyphosis, mobility time on the Timed Up and Go test, height, weight, total hip bone mineral density (BMD), grip strength, and vertebral fractures at baseline visits in 1993. Demographic characteristics included age and smoking status. We calculated mean Timed Up and Go time by quartile of kyphosis. Using multivariate linear regression, we estimated the independent association of kyphosis with mobility time, and quantified effects of other covariates on mobility. Mean mobility time increased from 9.3 s in the lowest to 10.1 s in the highest quartile of kyphosis. In a multivariate-adjusted model, mobility time increased 0.11 s (p = 0.02) for each standard deviation (11.9°) increase in kyphosis. Longer performance times were significantly associated with increasing age, decreasing grip strength, vertebral fractures, body mass index ≥25, and total hip BMD in the osteoporotic range. Kyphosis angle is independently associated with decreased mobility on the Timed Up and Go, which is in turn correlated with increased fall risk.     John Aitchison died in December 2016 leaving behind an important inheritance: to continue to explore the fascinating world of compositional data. However, notwithstanding the progress that we have made in this field of investigation and the diffusion of the CoDA theory in different researches, a lot of work has still to be done, particularly in geochemistry. In fact most of the papers published in international journals that manage compositional data ignore their nature and their consequent peculiar statistical properties. On the other hand, when CoDA principles are applied, several efforts are often made to continue to consider the log-ratio transformed variables, for example the centered log-ratio ones, as the original ones, demonstrating a sort of resistance to thinking in relative terms. This appears to be a very strange behavior since geochemists are used to ratios and their analysis is the base of the experimental calibration when standards are evolved to set the instruments. In this chapter some challenges are presented by exploring water chemistry data with the aim to invite people to capture the essence of thinking in a relative and multivariate way since this is the path to obtain a description of natural processes as complete as possible
